In this article, the phenomenon of low-frequency abnormal signals before earthquakes, which reflects the three elements of earthquakes and the beneath structure change information, is discussed. Based on the data recorded at the Shizuishan (SZS), Wuhai (WUH) and Dongshenmiao seismic stations around the epicenter of the Ms5.8 earthquake in Azuoqi, Inner Mongolia, in 2015, the low-frequency abnormal signal from the seismic waves before this earthquake is extracted. At the same time, the autocorrelation method is used to extract the reflected waves of the main interface from teleseismic events recorded by the seismic array in the epicenter area, and then the change information from the beneath structure is obtained. It is explained in time and space that the low-frequency abnormal signal before the main earthquake, extracted from the continuous waveform, is directly related to the change in the underground structure near the epicenter, and it can be determined that the wave propagation direction f the crustal stress before the earthquake is from south to north, and it continues to accumulate near the epicenter until the main earthquake occurs.

AbstractWith the development of sequencing technology, a large number of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified in addition to coding genes. LncRNAs, originally considered as junk RNA, are dysregulated in various types of cancer. Although protein-coding signaling pathways underlie various biological activities, and abnormal signal transduction is a key trigger and indicator for tumorigenesis and cancer progression, lncRNAs are sparking keen interest due to their versatile roles in fine-tuning signaling pathways. We are just beginning to scratch the surface of lncRNAs. Therefore, despite the fact that lncRNAs drive malignant phenotypes from multiple perspectives, in this review, we focus on important signaling pathways modulated by lncRNAs in cancer to demonstrate an up-to-date understanding of this emerging field.

Diabetic vascular complications (DVC) including macrovascular and microvascular lesions, have a significant impact on public health, and lead to increased patient mortality. Disordered intercellular cascades play a vital role in diabetic systemic vasculopathy. Exosomes participate in the abnormal signal transduction of local vascular cells and mediate the transmission of metabolic disorder signal molecules in distant organs and cells through the blood circulation. They can store different signaling molecules in the membrane structure and release them into the blood, urine, and tears. In recent years, the carrier value and therapeutic effect of exosomes derived from stem cells have garnered attention. Exosomes are not only a promising biomarker but also a potential target and tool for the treatment of DVC. This review explored changes in the production process of exosomes in the diabetic microenvironment and exosomes’ early warning role in DVC from different systems and their pathological processes. On the basis of these findings, we discussed the future direction of exosomes in the treatment of DVC, and the current limitations of exosomes in DVC research.

Congenital myasthenic syndromes are a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of neuromuscular disorders linked by abnormal signal transmission at the motor endplate caused by various genetic defects. Major clinical symptoms include weakness and fatigue during the first years of life but patients may also present with hypotonia, facial weakness, swallowing difficulties, respiratory dysfunction, ptosis and ophthalmoparesis. Here we report a 10-year-old boy who presented with mild developmental delay and bilateral ptosis caused by a frameshift mutation in the CHRNA1 gene that co-segregated within the family, and finally diagnosed as autosomal dominant congenital myasthenic syndrome.

Background: It is challenging to differentiate between enchondromas and atypical cartilaginous tumors (ACTs)/chondrosarcomas. In this study, correlations between radiological findings and final diagnosis were investigated in patients with central cartilaginous tumors. Methods: To evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of radiological findings, correlations between various radiological findings and final diagnoses were investigated in a cohort of 81 patients. Furthermore, a new radiological scoring system was developed by combining radiological findings. Results: Periosteal reaction on X-ray (p = 0.025), endosteal scalloping (p = 0.010) and cortical defect (p = 0.002) on CT, extraskeletal mass (p < 0.001), multilobular lesion (p < 0.001), abnormal signal in adjacent tissue (p = 0.004) on MRI, and increased uptake in bone scan (p = 0.002) and thallium scan (p = 0.027) was significantly correlated with final diagnoses. Based on the correlations between each radiological finding and postoperative histological diagnosis, a radiological scoring system combining these findings was developed. In another cohort of 17 patients, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the radiological score rates for differentiation between enchondromas and ACTs/chondrosarcomas were 88%, 89%, and 88%, respectively (p = 0.003). Conclusion: Radiological assessment with combined radiological findings is recommended to differentiate between enchondromas and ACT/chondrosarcomas.

We report a case of a middle-aged woman, normally fit and well, presenting with acute onset neurological deficit with progression to nadir in <1 hour. Initial MRI spine showed no significant abnormality, although second MRI spine showed abnormal signal in three to four segments with no compressive lesion. CT aortic angiography excluded vascular or ischaemic abnormality. We made a diagnosis of idiopathic acute transverse myelitis (ATM). She was treated with steroids and made significant progress improving from T11 ASIA A paraplegia to T11 ASIA C paraplegia by the time of discharge. Awareness of idiopathic ATM presenting hyperacutely with initial MRI spine being normal is important for prompt diagnosis and management.

Abstract A 37-year-old lady presented to Rheumatology with a three-year history of arthralgia, night sweats, and bilateral swollen buttocks. She described unusual levels of fatigue, memory disturbance and low-grade fevers without lymphadenopathy. She had silicone buttock augmentation 10 years earlier. Inflammatory markers, ANA, ENA, ANCA, ACE, immunoglobulins and IgG subclasses were normal; urinalysis was negative. Pelvic MRI demonstrated extensive abnormal signal change in keeping with silicone deposition within the buttocks, and an inflammatory response extending into the gluteus maximus muscles and surrounding subcutaneous fat. Areas of reduced T2 signal suggested a secondary granulomatous reaction.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease. The diagnosis of CJD is based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, electro-encephalography (EEG), or 14-3-3 protein detection. We report a case of a previously-healthy 72 years old woman, with evidence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), who complained of behavioral changes and rapidly progressive dementia. While hospitalization, she didn't have orientation to time and place and repeated an irrelevant sentence in response to questions. Also, anomia and impaired comprehension was observed. Myoclonic jerks, abnormal signal intensity at bilateral parieto-occipital cortices in MRI, periodic sharp wave complexes in EEG, and increased lactate dehydrogenase in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), highly recommended CJD for her. This is the second case of CJD after COVID-19 during this pandemic, which can be an alarm to clinicians about the silent impact of COVID-19 on the central nervous system.

Anosmia is a prevalent and pathognomonic symptom in patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), often accompanied by changes of taste or dysgeusia. It is also one of the symptoms that lasts the most even after the recovery. The studies that examine the migration path and timing of SARS-CoV-2 are needed in order to determinate the ideal timing for realizing an MRI so as to possibly find an abnormal signal on the olfactory bulb.
