AbstractSt Joseph’s Nudgee College is an Irish Christian Brothers boys’ boarding school in Brisbane. It was established in 1891 to provide the children of Irish Catholics living in regional and remote Queensland and northern New South Wales with access to an education that would act as a vehicle for socio-economic advancement. The first decades of the college’s existence were nevertheless defined by two competing, sometimes contradictory imperatives. An often-belligerent determination to retain an Irish identity existed side by side with an awareness that a ‘ghetto mentality’ would hinder the socio-economic advancement of Queensland’s Catholics. The balancing act that this necessitated was particularly evident in the College’s mixed reaction to the outbreak of war in 1914 and the subsequent reticence to celebrate Anzac Day between 1916 and 1939. This article explores the College’s response through its Annuals (Year Books) and places it in the context of the Australian Irish Catholic experience of war and commemoration.

An incline impact test can be used as a shock test in lieu of a drop test in several test protocols, including ISTA Procedure 1A [1]. Some test protocols, such as ISTA Procedure 1E [2], only allow for an incline impact test and horizontal impact test. In this case study, a graph was developed for a 500-lb impact tester at Christian Brothers University (CBU) Packaging Laboratory. It determines sliding platform location on the incline for a given packaged-product weight to meet the impact velocity recommended by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA). One station of the platform location higher than the station obtained from the graph is recommended to ensure the meeting of ISTA recommended impact velocity. It is well known that weight is not used in impact velocity of a free fall drop. However, this case study shows that weight contributes to impact velocity of an incline impact test. It contributes to the rolling friction. A heavier weight yields a smaller coefficient of rolling friction ( 𝜇𝑘 ), which results in a higher impact velocity. The coefficient of rolling friction for CBU’s incline impact tester can be computed from 𝜇𝑘 = −9 −5𝑤 + 0.1092, where w is the total weight of the sliding platform and packaged product.

Monasticism in the United States has a long and complex history, beginning with the 1727 arrival of twelve members of the Company of St Ursula (Ursulines) in the French colony of New Orleans. Since that time, most women and men religious have staffed and administered schools and hospitals, while others have dedicated their lives to a ministry of prayer. The contributions of the Daughters of Charity, Benedictines, Christian Brothers, and Poor Clares—to name just a few—allowed the US Catholic Church to develop an extensive network of educational, healthcare, and social service institutions to serve the spiritual and physical needs of Catholics and non-Catholics. US monasticism in the twenty-first century is marked by declining numbers and an ageing membership. In 2009, concerned about the direction in which sisters and nuns appeared to be moving, the Vatican conducted an apostolic visitation among congregations of women religious.

By examining patterns of ransoming strategies, this paper generates insights about the interactions between state, economic and social actors across the Russian-Kazakh frontier in the early 19th century. Generally, first encounters across borders and boundaries include violence and invasion. Accordingly, the enslavement and subsequent ransoming of captured people represent common practices in frontier regions. Analyses of these processes illuminate the nature of interactions between different actors along the border. Securing release of slaves through ransom was a regular component of Russian foreign policy from the 16th century onwards. Imperial institutions were established for ransoming Russian Christian brothers-in-the-faith and, later, for other subjects of the Russian Empire who had been enslaved by the Ottoman Empire and Central Asian Khanates. With imperial financing, the Orenburg Border Commission (1799-1859) co-ordinated the ransoming process and developed networks for achieving the release of Russian subjects held in the Kazakh Steppe, in Khiva and Bukhara. Actors involved in these networks were of heterogeneous descent, including Russian imperial officials, Bukharian and Khivan merchants, Kazakh officials, as well as Russian agents. Drawing on archival research, this article explores ransoming networks and strategies along the Russian-Kazakh frontier and probes the motives of the actors involved.

This study aims to examine the communication patterns of “Shihab & Shihab” on Narasi TV with the episode of "Muslim and Christian Brothers". This study uses a type of qualitative research with ethnographic of communication method. To collect data, observation and documentation were conducted.  Data analysis was performed using content analysis from Spradley. The results of the study indicate that tiered clarification system or tabayyun is very important to do in our life, particularly in the revolutional industry 4.0. This phenomenon is reflected in the communication patterns carried out by Najwa Shihab, Quraish Shihab, and Priest Budi in Narasi TV. Ethnography of communication well-known as SPEAKING by Hymes in the form of settings, participants, ends, acts, keys, instruments, norms, and genres are the reasons why the communication pattern uses a tiered clarification system.

This study describes the experiences of a group of individuals who attended a southern California Catholic boys’ high school, and the men who taught them. The goal of this study was to relate a narrative that explained how an education, steeped in the Christian Brothers’ mission provided a quality education for the poor, and shaped the lives, perspectives, and values of the graduates. The narrative, reported through a social perspective inspired by Catholic Social Teaching (CST), the philosophical writings of Jacques Maritain and Alisdair MacIntyre, showed how the graduates received a quality education from the Brothers, and absorbed a strong sense of Catholic virtue, including a commitment toward social justice, an understanding of role of building and sustaining community, and an appreciation for giving back to society. Cathedral High, a small Catholic high school in Los Angeles, is an embodiment of MacIntyre’s belief that small communities, dedicated to upholding moral virtue and civility offer the possibility of reforming a society currently mired in individualistic and materialistic pursuits. A further implication is that Catholic schools, with their well-documented record for providing effective education for the poor, should remain an educational option for inner-city families.
