Abstract Water jet peening can effectively improve the fatigue strength of metal materials, and the outlet shape of nozzle greatly affects the effect of water jet peening. In this paper, the effects of nozzle outlet shape on water jet velocity and impact pressure is studied by numerical simulation, and the jet velocity and dynamic pressure for different standoff distances are also discussed. The results show that the water jets of square, circular and triangular nozzles are highly concentrated, and the water jet of elliptical nozzles is the most divergent. The axial velocity attenuation of the square nozzle along the axis is slower than that of the other three nozzles. The water axial velocity of the elliptical nozzle attenuates fastest and the length of the core segment of the water jet is the smallest. Within a certain axial distance, the dynamic pressure area in the central area of the elliptical water jet is obviously larger than that of the other three nozzles, and the effective treatment range is large, which is more suitable for the welding surface strengthening operation.

In cemented joint arthroplasty, state-of-the-art cementing techniques include high-pressure pulsatile saline lavage prior to cementation. Even with its outstanding importance in cementation, there are surprisingly few studies regarding the physical parameters that define pulsatile lavage systems. To investigate the parameters of impact pressure, flow rate, frequency and the cleaning effect in cancellous bone, we established a standardized laboratory model. Standardized fat-filled carbon foam specimens representing human cancellous bone were cleaned with three different high-pressure pulsatile lavage systems. Via CT scans before and after cleaning, the cleaning effect was evaluated. All systems showed a cleaning depth of at least 3.0 mm and therefore can be generally recommended to clean cancellous bone in cemented joint arthroplasty. When comparing the three lavage systems, the study showed significant differences regarding cleaning depths and volume, with one system being superior to its peer systems. Regarding the physical parameters, high impact pressure in combination with high flow rate and longer distance to the flushed object seems to be the best combination to improve the cleaning of cancellous bone and therefore increase the chances of a deeper cement penetration that is required in cemented joint arthroplasty. In summary, this study provides the first standardized comparison of different lavage systems and thus gives initial guidance on how to optimally prepare cancellous bone for cemented joint arthroplasty.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) jets are a promising method to assist drilling, enhance oil–gas production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To further improve the drilling efficiency of SCO2 jet-assisted drilling, organ-pipe nozzles were applied to generate a self-excited oscillation SCO2 jet (SEOSJ). The impact pressure oscillation and rock erosion capability of SEOSJs under both supercritical and gaseous CO2 (GCO2) ambient conditions were experimentally investigated. It was found that the impact pressure oscillation characteristics of SEOSJs produced by organ-pipe nozzles are dramatically affected by the oscillation chamber length. The optimum range of the dimensionless chamber length to generate the highest impact pressure peak and the strongest pressure oscillation is within 7–9. The dimensionless pressure peak and the pressure ratio decreases gradually with increasing pressure difference, whereas the pressure oscillation intensity increases with increasing pressure difference and the increasing rate decreases gradually. The dominant frequency was observed to decrease monotonically with increasing chamber length but increases with the increase of pressure difference. Moreover, the comparison of impingement characteristics of SEOSJs under different ambient conditions showed that the values of dimensionless peak impact pressure are similar under the two ambient conditions, and the SEOSJ achieves higher pressure oscillation intensity and dominant frequency in SCO2 at the same pressure difference. The rock breaking ability of the SEOSJ is closely related to its axial impact pressure. The erosion depth and mass loss of sandstone caused by the organ-pipe nozzle with the best impact pressure performance is higher than those produced by other nozzles. The SEOSJ results in a deeper and narrower crater in SCO2 than in GCO2 under the same pressure difference. The reported results provide guidance for SEOSJ applications and the design of an organ-pipe nozzle used for jet-assisted drilling.

Understanding the damping mechanism of baffles is helpful to make more reasonable use of them in suppressing liquid sloshing. In this study, the damping effect and mechanism of vertical baffles in shallow liquid sloshing under a rotational excitation are investigated by an improved particle method. By incorporation of a background mesh scheme and a modified pressure gradient model, the accuracy of impact pressure during sloshing is significantly enhanced. Combined with the advantages of the particle method, the present numerical method is a wonderful tool for the investigation of liquid sloshing issues. Through the analysis of impact pressure, the influences of baffle height and baffle position on the damping mechanism are discussed. The results show that the damping effect of vertical baffles increases with the increase of the elevation of baffle top and decreases with the increase of the elevation of the baffle bottom. Moreover, the resonance characteristics of sloshing are altered when static water is divided into two parts by the vertical baffle. The dominant damping mechanism of vertical baffles depends on the configurations.

A challenging wave energy converter design that utilized the denser energy part of the nearshore breaking wave zone to generate electricity was introduced in 2016 by Shintake. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University’s project aims to take advantage of breaking wave energy to harness electricity. The 2016 version of the device consisted only of a bare turbine and power generator. Early exploration of the design recorded short periods and high impact wave pressures were experienced by the structure, with the turbine unable to harvest energy effectively. Additional structure to not only reduce incoming impact pressure but also increase the duration of water flow through the turbine was needed. These are the main reasons behind incorporating the duct attachment into the design. This paper show that the duct is capable of halving the impact pressure experienced by the turbine and can increase the energy exposure by up to 1.6 times the bare turbine configuration. Furthermore, it is also said that wave angle (β) = 40° is the critical angle, although the duct still increases wave energy exposure to the power take-off up to β = 60°.

AbstractA physical model experiment of flume block landslide was used to study the influence of landslide surge impact on underwater pipeline surface under different water depths. The influence of surge impact pressure on pipelines with different water depths and the impact pressure of surge at different angles of underwater pipelines wall were analyzed. And the relationship between the maximum impact pressure of underwater pipelines and the depth of water was obtained. The results indicated that with the decrease of the water depths, the maximum impact pressure at the wall of the underwater pipeline increases approximately linearly, and the slider is easier to form higher first wave height. The maximum impact pressure of the upper surface of the pipeline wall is greater than that of the lower surface of the pipeline wall under the same working conditions. It is also found that the smaller the depth of water, the larger the maximum pressure and average pressure at the measuring point would be and the greater the pressure fluctuation becomes when slider volume and landslide water inlet angle and speed remain the same.

Cemented implant fixation in total joint arthroplasty has been proven to be safe and reliable with good long-term results. However, aseptic loosening is one of the main reasons for revision, potentially caused by poor cementation with low penetration depth in the cancellous bone. Aim of this prospective laboratory study was, to compare impact pressure and cleaning effects of pulsatile saline lavage to novel carbon dioxide lavage in a standardized carbon foam setup, to determine whether or not additional use of carbon dioxide lavage has any impact on cleaning volume or cleaning depth in cancellous bone. Carbon specimens simulating human cancellous bone were filled with industrial grease and then underwent a standardized cleaning procedure. Specimens underwent computed tomography pre- and post-cleaning. Regarding the impact pressure, isolated carbon dioxide lavage showed significant lower pressure compared to pulsatile saline lavage. Even though the combination of carbon dioxide lavage and pulsatile saline lavage had a positive cleaning effect compared to the isolated use of pulsatile saline lavage or carbon dioxide lavage, this was not significant in terms of cleaning volume or cleaning depth.
