Improving the grain yield of crops in both favourable and stressful environments is the main breeding objective required to ensure food security. In this review, I outline a genotype-to-phenotype approach that exploits the potential values of quantitative genetics and process-based crop modelling in developing new plant types with high yields. The effects of quantitative trait locus (QTL), for traits typically at the single-organ level over a short time scale, were projected for their impact on crop growth during the whole growing season in the field. This approach can provide more markers for selection programmes for specific environments whilst also allowing for prioritization. Crop modelling is thus a powerful tool for ideotyping under contrasting conditions, i.e., use of single-environment information for predicting phenotypes under different environments.

Amyloidosis is a disorder of protein folding in which various proteins automatically aggregate into a highly abnormal fibrillar conformation. Amyloidosis is classified into systemic and localized forms depending on whether the abnormal proteins deposited in several different organs or only a single organ. In localized amyloidosis of the head and neck regions, laryngeal amyloidosis is common; however, localized amyloidosis of the nose is extremely rare. We herein report a case of localized amyloidosis of the nose and review the relevant literature on localized sinonasal amyloidosis. A 41-year-old man presented with a history of severe nasal obstruction, which had persisted for two decades. Nasal endoscopy and imaging studies showed extensive thickening of the bilateral nasal mucosa and diffuse submucosal deposition of calcification. After histopathological and systemic examinations, he was diagnosed with localized amyloidosis of the nasal mucosa. Septoplasty and bilateral inferior turbinoplasty, which consisted of mucosal resection using an ultrasonic bone curette, was performed and his symptoms markedly improved. Localized sinonasal amyloidosis has a good prognosis and surgical resection should be selected as a first-line treatment; however, clinicians should recognize the high probability of recurrence.

Background: This study was to evaluate the value of lobectomy in the prognosis of Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with primary metastasis based on the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database.Methods: This was a population-based retrospective study and the clinical data were collected from the National Cancer Institute's SEER database between 2010 and 2015. The effects of pulmonary surgery and surgical procedures on lung cancer-specific survival (LCSS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed, and the COX regression models were employed to evaluate the survival of primary surgery in patients with primary metastatic NSCLC (pmNSCLC) and the survival of surgical procedure in pmNSCLC patients.Results: A total of 55,717 patients diagnosed with pmNSCLC between 2010 and 2015 were enrolled, and pulmonary surgery was indicated in 1,575 (2.83%) patients. Surgery was an independent risk factor for LCSS (P < 0.001, HR 0.658, 95%CI: 0.637–0.680) and OS (P < 0.001, HR 0.665, 95%CI: 0.644–0.686) of pmNSCLC patients. The surgery was associated with better OS (P < 0.001, HR 0.678, 95%CI: 0.657–0.699). The site of metastasis was also related to the survival after primary tumor surgery (P = 0.001). As compared to the sublobectomy and pneumonectomy, lobectomy improved the LCSS for NSCLC patients with single-organ metastasis, rather than multiple metastases (P < 0.001). In patients receiving sublobectomy, lobectomy, and pneumonectomy, the median LCSS was 12, 28, and 13 months, respectively, and the 5-year LCSS rate was 14.39, 32.06, and 17.24%, respectively.Conclusion: The effect of locoregional surgery on the survival of pmNSCLC patients with single-organ metastasis has been underestimated, and lobectomy may be a preferred treatment for patients with single-lung metastasis.

Here we summarize vasculitides involving the skin. Among cutaneous vasculitides there are three major groups, one is a systemic vasculitis with cutaneous involvement, another a systemic vasculitis with skin limited appearance, and the last group is a single organ vasculitis, that only affects the skin. We summarize the importance of the proper diagnosis in this heterogeneous group based on both clinical and histopathologic examinations, and present information on the complex underlying pathology

The anoxia-tolerant crucian carp (Carassius carassius) has been studied in detail for numerous years, with particular focus on unravelling the underlying physiological mechanisms of anoxia tolerance. However, relatively little work has been focused on what occurs beyond anoxia, and often the focus is a single organ or tissue type. In this study, we quantified more than 100 metabolites by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS) in brain, heart, liver, and blood plasma from four experimental groups, being normoxic (control) fish, anoxia-exposed fish, and two groups that had been exposed to anoxia followed by reoxygenation for either 3 h or 24 h. The heart, which maintains cardiac output during anoxia, unexpectedly, was slower to recover compared to the brain and liver, mainly due to a slower return to control concentrations of the energy-carrying compounds ATP, GTP, and phosphocreatine. Crucian carp accumulated amino acids in most tissues, and also surprisingly high levels of succinate in all tissues investigated during anoxia. Purine catabolism was enhanced, leading to accumulation of uric acid during anoxia and increasing urea formation that continued into 24 h of reoxygenation. These tissue-specific differences in accumulation and distribution of the metabolites may indicate an intricate system of transport between tissues, opening for new avenues of investigation of possible mechanisms aimed at reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and resultant tissue damage during reoxygenation.

In order to regenerate tissues successfully, stem cells must detect injuries and restore missing cell types through largely unknown mechanisms. Planarian flatworms have an extensive stem cell population responsible for regenerating any organ after amputation. Here, we compare planarian stem cell responses to different injuries by either amputation of a single organ, the pharynx, or removal of tissues from other organs by decapitation. We find that planarian stem cells adopt distinct behaviors depending on what tissue is missing to target progenitor and tissue production towards missing tissues. Loss of non-pharyngeal tissues only increases non-pharyngeal progenitors, while pharynx removal selectively triggers division and expansion of pharynx progenitors. By pharmacologically inhibiting either mitosis or activation of the MAP kinase ERK, we identify a narrow window of time during which stem cell division and ERK signaling produces pharynx progenitors necessary for regeneration. These results indicate that planarian stem cells can tailor their output to match the regenerative needs of the animal.

BackgroundEsophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is the most common kind of esophageal cancer. Age at diagnosis of advanced EAC is greater. Studies about practice patterns for elderly EAC patients with distant metastasis (DM) in stage IVB are limited. This retrospective, population-based study was conducted using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) to evaluate 855 elderly EAC patients with DM in stage IVB from 2010 to 2015.Methods855 elderly EAC patients with DM in stage IVB between 2010 and 2015 were included in this study. Univariate and multivariate Cox-regression and Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to assess prognosis. These patients were classified to bone-only, brain-only, lung-only, liver-only, and multiple (patients with two or more organs in metastasis)-site group according to the site of metastasis. Overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), median survival time (MST), and survival rate (SR) were evaluated to analyze the survival outcomes.ResultsThe most common metastasis site was the liver among the single-organ metastasis population, followed by lung, bone, and brain. Compared with the bone-only group, the multiple-site group was associated with worst OS (HR: 1.037, 95% CI: 0.811–1.327, p = 0.770) and CSS (HR: 1.052, 95% CI: 0.816–1.357, p = 0.695). The multiple-site group also had the lowest MST in the population (MST: 2 months in OS and 3 months in CSS) and SR (6-month SR: 27.1% in OS, 29.9% in CSS, 1-year SR: 10.7% in OS, 12.0% in CSS, 3-year SR: 2.5% in OS, 2.8% in CSS). Compared to untreated patients (N) in the total population, other patients who were treated with surgery (S), radiotherapy (R), and chemotherapy (C) are beneficial for the prognosis (OS and CSS: p < 0.001).ConclusionThis population-based study was conducted to ascertain metastasis patterns and survival outcomes of EAC patients with DM in stage IVB. Elderly patients with multiple-site metastasis exhibited the worst OS and CSS among all the populations, and patients with bone-only metastasis had the worst OS and CSS among single-organ metastasis populations. Active treatment is beneficial for elderly EAC patients with DM in stage IVB, especially chemotherapy. This study also shows that more than one third of the patients had not received any therapy.

Thorax disease classification is a challenging task due to complex pathologies and subtle texture changes, etc. It has been extensively studied for years largely because of its wide application in computer-aided diagnosis. Most existing methods directly learn global feature representations from whole Chest X-ray (CXR) images, without considering in depth the richer visual cues lying around informative local regions. Thus, these methods often produce sub-optimal thorax disease classification performance because they ignore the very informative pathological changes around organs. In this paper, we propose a novel Part-Aware Mask-Guided Attention Network (PMGAN) that learns complementary global and local feature representations from all-organ region and multiple single-organ regions simultaneously for thorax disease classification. Specifically, multiple innovative soft attention modules are designed to progressively guide feature learning toward the global informative regions of whole CXR image. A mask-guided attention module is designed to further search for informative regions and visual cues within the all-organ or single-organ images, where attention is elegantly regularized by automatically generated organ masks and without introducing computation during the inference stage. In addition, a multi-task learning strategy is designed, which effectively maximizes the learning of complementary local and global representations. The proposed PMGAN has been evaluated on the ChestX-ray14 dataset and the experimental results demonstrate its superior thorax disease classification performance against the state-of-the-art methods.
