Polyvinyl chloride compositions are widely used to obtain various types of products. In the composition of the PVC composite, one of the main ingredients is a plasticizer, the introduction of which makes it possible to vary the characteristics of the obtained polymeric materials and products and significantly expand the range of their application. Manufacturability in the processing of polyvinyl chloride compositions serves as an important criterion for the suitability and economic efficiency of the developed plasticizer. In the modern world, the high quality of products is directly related to their environmental safety. In this regard, the work describes the production of environmentally friendly plasticizers based on adipic acid and ethoxylated butanol. Their physicochemical indicators have been investigated. The effect of the obtained additives on the rheology of PVC composites has been studied. The values of the flow characteristics of the melts of the developed PVC compositions plasticized with butyl butoxyethyl adipate and decyl butoxyethyl adipate were estimated. It was shown that the fluidity of melts, in comparison with compounds of a similar composition containing industrial dioctyl phthalate, is characterized by even slightly higher values.

During exploitation of PVC products, the negative impact of high temperatures and light, and also the destructive influence of various microorganisms, leads to the deterioration of physical-mechanical properties and change of products painting. For prevention of the dehydrochlorination process of PVC, it is necessary to use the effective complex stabilizers, including biostabilizers, differing with their high processability and simultaneously possessing biocidal properties.  In this work the results of investigations of influence of the synthesized sulphur-containing epoxycyclopropanes as stabilizing additives for prevention of the dehydrochlorination process of the compositions based on plasticized PVC have been presented. The influence of these compounds as co-stabilizers in the composition of complex stabilizers – stearates Ca (CaSt2) and Zn (ZnSt2) on thermo- and light stability of PVCcompositions and also on their physical-mechanical and exploitation indices has been studied. It has been established the synthesized epoxy- and cyclopropane-containing mono- and disulphides jointly with stearic acid salts form the synergic mixtures, which can improve the physical-mechanical properties of PVC compositions, their thermal and light stability.

As a modifying additive in PVC-compositions, silicates produced by means of rice husk processing are of practical interest. Rice husk ash obtained by burning at 350°C, along with synthetic and naturally occurring wollastonite, significantly reduce plasticizer’s migration from the PVC-composition due to their porosity. This is due to the fact that the part of hydroxyl components of the plasticizer EDOS has adsorbed on the surface or retained by the silicates pores. Along with that, Miwoll 10-97 ensures a greater decrease in plasticizer’s migration than synthetic calcium silicate on the base of rice husk ash. When all the researched silicates are modified by the rice husk and naturally occurring wollastonite, heat stability of PVC-compositions grows. This is preconditioned by the alkaline origin of the surface of filling compounds that allows their possible reaction with chlorine hydride released from PVC during thermal decomposition. Synthetic and naturally occurring wollastonite enhance strain-strength properties of PVC-compositions whereas silicates on the case of rice husk reduce these parameters.

The compositions on the basis of PVC, containing dioctyl phthalate as a plasticizer, complex thermal stabilizers – calcium and zinc stearates and adducts of thiophenol and ethanedithiol with gemdiglycidyloxymethylsubstituted cyclopropylvinyl ether as co-stabilizers and biocidal additives were developed. Thermal properties of the developed compositions were investigated and the influence of the synthesized sulfur-containing adducts on the thermal stability and color change of the compositions studied. The tests were carried out to reveal the antifungal activity of adducts in the structure of PVC compositions. It found that the chemical structure of adducts after introduction into the structure of compositions was not essentially changed. The compositions with the participation of adducts as co-stabilizers acquired improved indices on thermal stability, color stability and antifungal activity.

The paper deals with filling polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compositions modified with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) in a wide concentration range (per hundredth of PVC resin (phr) 10–20 phr ABS) with short-fiber basalt fiber, intended for production of profile mounded products of various functional purposes. The introduction of ABS into PVC compositions makes it easier to process the material, and improves the impact toughness, which for rigid PVC products is an important factor since it expands the areas of their application. However, as a rule, polymer-polymer blends are characterized by low mechanical properties under compression, tension and bending, resulting from the formation of two-phase morphology, which is often heterogeneous. To increase stiffness and strength, 7 phr of short-fiber basalt fiber was introduced into their composition. Experimental samples were made by extrusion in the form of flat profiles. Filling with short-fiber basalt fiber resulted in an increase in the bending strength of PVC specimens over the entire concentration range with an optimum in the region of 10–20 phr ABS, as compared to unfilled blended polymer compositions. The method of energy dispersion analysis established that, depending on the ABS content in the mixture, the interaction of the polymer (PVC) with the filler (fiber) is observed either at the polymer-filler boundary or through the boundary layer of the elastomer.

In this paper, three different plasticizer molecular sizes namely; glycerol (C3), tributyrin (C15) and trilaurin (C32) was used as non-carcinogenic plasticizers in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The experimental results indicated that all the plasticizers play an important role of PVC toughening. Among of these plasticizers, tributyrin was the most effective for PVC plasticization due to its suitable molecular size. With the presence of tributyrin, PVC was found to tougher and softer which reflected as the increased tensile elongation at break, impact strength and the decreased tensile strength. Morphological study by scanning electron microscope (SEM) exhibited the localized plastic deformations in PVC/plasticized with 15 phr tributyrin. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed some shifts of the glass transition temperature (Tg) for all the plasticized PVC compositions. The maximum shift was found when PVC was blended with 15 phr tributyrin. Migration test showed that the plasticizers were easily migrated in ethanol. For the migration in water, it did only slightly.

Heterogeneous catalysts are widely used in basic research and in the petrochemical industry due to their effectiveness. In modern times, interest in this type of catalyst and, in particular, in mineral oxides is associated with the technological design of the process, namely: The absence of waste emissions, and the possibility of regeneration and reuse of the catalyst, which meets the criteria of green chemistry. For this reason, the preparation of non-toxic adipate plasticizers is expediently carried out under conditions of heterogeneous catalysis. Zinc oxide was chosen for this purpose, and as initial reagents: Adipic acid, butoxyethanol, and phenoxyethanol. For synthesized butoxyethylphenoxyethyl adipate by thermogravimetry on a TGA-DSC-combined thermal analysis instrument and differential scanning calorimetry on a DSC-1 instrument («Mettler Toledo»), the following properties were studied: Thermal stability, melting and crystallization temperatures, polymer compatibility. An analysis of the data in comparison with di-2-ethylhexylphthalate confirmed the possibility of using it as a plasticizing additive in PVC compositions. The zinc compound obtained in situ as part of the developed plasticizing composition contributes to increasing the color and thermal stability of the obtained PVC compositions.

It is promising to use wollastonite as a modifier of plasticized polyvinyl chloride compositions. The main advantages of wollastonite are white colour and needle-shaped particles. To improve the compatibility of this filler with a polymer matrix, it is effective to activate the surface of this mineral by quaternary ammonium salts (QAS). Valuable information on molecular motion in modified compositions can be obtained by studying the relaxation processes using dynamic mechanical analysis. In the temperature dependences of the mechanical loss tangent of the PVC compositions in the region of transition from the glassy to highly elastic state, two maxima were observed. It has been established that for compositions modified with both natural and surface treated wollastonite, regardless of the chemical structure of QAS used to activate the polymer. This is probably due to the formation of a boundary layer in which molecular mobility is inhibited because of the interaction of the polymer with the filler. Thawing of segmental mobility in this boundary layer occurs at the higher temperatures than in the PVC matrix. The surface treatment of wollastonite by QAS somewhat shifts the described relaxation transitions to higher temperatures due to an increase in the efficiency of interaction of the components at the interface. The magnitude of the change in the temperature of the segmental mobility, both in the polymer matrix and in the boundary layer, increases with an increase in the degree of activity of the filler surface.

In work influence of the main additives (a heat stabiliser, softener, an excipient) on physicomechanical properties of compositions on the basis of polyvinylchloride (PVC) is studied. It is noted that increase in content of additives in a system in the stated quantities leads to change of Shore hardness of A. and melt flow rate. The functional interrelation between the applied additives and properties of plastic compounds is established. The reliability of the received mathematical model and its applicability for prediction of properties of PVC compositions depending on structure of a compounding is proved.
