Reducing emissions of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the smoke number at the stage of designing and improving of combustion chambers is an urgent engineering and environmental task that requires improvement of the currently used predictive combustion models. The submechanisms describing the growth of PAHs in such models are incomplete and valid only in a narrow range of initial conditions. Further refinement of the kinetics of PAH and soot formation is associated with the need for more theoretical and experimental studies.

A new experimental method for evaluating the detonability of fuel-air mixtures (FAMs) based on measuring the deflagration-to-detonation (DDT) run-up distance and/or time in a standard pulse detonation tube is used to rank gaseous premixed and nonpremixed FAMs by their detonability under substantially identical thermodynamic and gasdynamic conditions. In the experiments, FAMs based on hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, propylene, propane-butane, n-pentane, and natural gas of various compositions, as well as FAMs based on the gaseous pyrolysis products of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are used: from extremely fuel-lean to extremely fuel-rich at normal temperatures and pressures.

Recently, we developed a numerical approach for the simulation of detonation waves on fully unstructured grids and applied it to the numerical study of the mechanisms of detonation initiation in multifocusing systems. Current work is devoted to further development of our numerical approach, namely, parallelization of the numerical scheme and introduction of more comprehensive detailed chemical kinetics scheme.

To reduce the hydrodynamic drag force to the movement of the boat, an artificial gas cavity is organized under its bottom. Such a cavity partially insulates the bottom from direct contact with water and provides “gas lubrication” by means of forced supply of atmospheric air or exhaust gases from the main propulsion system. A proper longitudinal and transverse shaping of the gas cavity can significantly (by 20%-30%) reduce the hydrodynamic drag of the boat at low (less than 3%) consumption of the propulsion system power for gas supply.

A numerical study of combustion of the aluminum-air suspension in the swirling flow in the expansion chamber has been performed. The physical and mathematical formulation of the problem is based on the dynamic model of the multiphase reacting media.

Restrictions of emissions for civil aircraft engines, on the one hand, and the need in increasing the engine efficiency, on the other hand, cause difficulties during development of low-emission combustors for such engines.

The paper presents the results of thermodynamic calculations of the effect of pure boron additives on combustion characteristics of high-energy materials (HEM) based on ammonium perchlorate, ammonium nitrate, active fuel-binder, and powders of aluminum Al, titanium Ti, magnesium Mg, and boron B. The combustion parameters and the equilibrium composition of condensed combustion products (CCPs) of HEM model compositions were obtained with thermodynamic calculation program “Terra.” The compositions of solid propellants with different ratios of metals (Al/B, Ti/B, Mg/B, and Al/Mg/B) were considered. The combustion temperature Tad in a combustion chamber, the vacuum specific impulse J at the nozzle exit, and the mass fraction ma of the CCPs for HEMs were determined.

The goal of this research is to obtain experimental information about combustion characteristics of the composite propellant containing various metallic fuels. The propellant formulations contained two fractions of ammonium perchlorate (64.6%), inert binder (19.7%) - butadiene rubber SKD plastized with transformer oil, and metal fuel (15.7% of aluminum ASD-4, ASD-6, Alex; boron; aluminum diboride; aluminum dodecaboride; some mixtures of above listed ingredients). Experimental information will be used further as a background to develop the physical and mathematical model of combustion process.

Recently, prospective direction of the combustion theory development is the preparation of fuel compositions and study of the composite fuels ignition characteristics, for example, in the form of emulsions and suspensions. Such fuels and their combustion processes are characterized by higher environmental, energy, economic, and operational properties. Of great interest is the use of gel fuels prepared by thickening emulsions and suspensions to the state of elastically deformable materials for the aerospace industry and thermal power engineering. Gel fuels have advantages over widespread liquid fuels in environmental and fire safety aspects of storage processes, transportation, and combustion.
