Abstract Nanofluid is a colloidal mixture consisting of nano-sized particles dispersed in a liquid medium. It improves heat transfer properties and promotes high energy efficiency in a wide spectrum of engineering applications. In recent years, particularly in the automotive industry, the addition of nanofluid in diesel/biodiesel as an additive for ICE has become an attractive approach to promote enhanced combustion efficiency and emission reduction due to their superior thermophysical properties. Many researchers have previously demonstrated that the addition of nanoparticles in diesel/biodiesel fuel improved the overall engine combustion characteristics. As a whole, this study aims to summarize the recent research findings related to the effect of nanoparticles on the fuel properties and engine combustion efficiency. Furthermore, different types of additive blended with varying fuel properties are also compared and discussed. Lastly, the advantages and prospects of using nanofluid as an additive fuel are summarized for future research opportunities.

Utilising pyrolysis as a waste tyre processing technology has various economic and social advantages, along with the fact that it is an effective conversion method. Despite extensive research and a notable likelihood of success, this technology has not yet seen implementation in industrial and commercial settings. In this review, over 100 recent publications are reviewed and summarised to give attention to the current state of global tyre waste management, pyrolysis technology, and plastic waste conversion into liquid fuel. The study also investigated the suitability of pyrolysis oil for use in diesel engines and provided the results on diesel engine performance and emission characteristics. Most studies show that discarded tyres can yield 40–60% liquid oil with a calorific value of more than 40 MJ/kg, indicating that they are appropriate for direct use as boiler and furnace fuel. It has a low cetane index, as well as high viscosity, density, and aromatic content. According to diesel engine performance and emission studies, the power output and combustion efficiency of tyre pyrolysis oil are equivalent to diesel fuel, but engine emissions (NOX, CO, CO, SOX, and HC) are significantly greater in most circumstances. These findings indicate that tyre pyrolysis oil is not suitable for direct use in commercial automobile engines, but it can be utilised as a fuel additive or combined with other fuels.

Fly ash is an aluminosilicate and the major by-product from coal combustion in power stations; its increasing volumes are major economic and environmental concerns, particularly since it is one of the largest mineral resources based on current estimates. Mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) is the only stable phase in the Al2O3-SiO2 system and is used in numerous applications owing to its high-temperature chemical and mechanical stabilities. Hence, fly ash offers a potential economical resource for mullite fabrication, which is confirmed by a review of the current literature. This review details the methodologies to utilise fly ash with different additives to fabricate what are described as porous interconnected mullite skeletons or dense mullite bodies of approximately stoichiometric compositions. However, studies of pure fly ash examined only high-Al2O3 forms and none of these works reported long-term, high-temperature, firing shrinkage data for these mullite bodies. In the present work, high-SiO2 fly ashes were used to fabricate percolated mullite, which is demonstrated by the absence of firing shrinkage upon long-term high-temperature soaking. The major glass component of the fly ash provides viscosities suitably high for shape retention but low enough for ionic diffusion and the minor mullite component provides the nucleating agent to grow mullite needles into a direct-bonded, single-crystal, continuous, needle network that prevents high-temperature deformation and isolates the residual glass in the triple points. These attributes confer outstanding long-term dimensional stability at temperatures exceeding 1500 °C, which is unprecedented for mullite-based compositions.

With a geological reserve of over 170 billion tons, coal is the most abundant energy source in Mongolia with six operating thermal power stations. Moreover, in Ulaanbaatar city over 210000 families live in the Ger district and use over 800000 tons of coal as a fuel. The three thermal power plants in Ulaanbaatar burn about 5 million tons of coal, resulting in more than 500000 tons of coal combustion by-products per year. Globally, the ashes produced by thermal power plants, boilers, and single ovens pose serious environmental problems. The utilization of various types of waste is one of the factors determining the sustainability of cities. Therefore, the processing of wastes for re-use or disposal is a critical topic in waste management and materials research. According to research, the Mongolian capital city's air and soil quality has reached a disastrous level. The main reasons for air pollution in Ulaanbaatar are reported as being coal-fired stoves of the Ger residential district, thermal power stations, small and medium-sized low-pressure furnaces, and motor vehicles. Previously, coal ashes have been used to prepare advanced materials such as glass-ceramics with the hardness of 6.35 GPa, geopolymer concrete with compressive strength of over 30 MPa and zeolite A with a Cr (III) removal capacity of 35.8 mg/g. Here we discuss our latest results on the utilization of fly ash for preparation of a cement stabilized base layer for paved roads, mechanically activated fly ash for use in concrete production, and coal ash from the Ger district for preparation of an adsorbent. An addition of 20% fly ash to 5-8% cement made from a mixture of road base gave a compressive strength of ~ 4MPa, which exceeds the standard. Using coal ashes from Ger district prepared a new type of adsorbent material capable of removing various organic pollutants from tannery water was developed. This ash also showed weak leaching characteristics in water and acidic environment, which opens up an excellent opportunity to utilize.

The effects of altitude and fuel composition on gaseous and particle emissions from a turbojet engine were investigated as part of the National Jet Fuels Combustion Program (NJFCP) effort. Two conventional petroleum based jet fuels (a “nominal” and a “worst-case” jet fuel) and two test fuels with unique characteristics were selected for this study. The “worst-case” conventional jet fuel with high flash point and viscosity resulted in reduced combustion efficiency supported by the reduced CO2 emissions and corresponding increased CO and THC emissions. In addition, increased particle number (PN), particle mass (PM), and black carbon (BC) emissions were observed. Operating the engine on a bimodal fuel, composed of heavily branched C12 and C16 iso-paraffinic hydrocarbons with an extremely low cetane number did not significantly impact the engine performance or gaseous emissions but significantly reduced PN, PM, and BC emissions when compared to other fuels. The higher aromatic content and lower hydrogen content in the C-5 fuel were observed to increase PN, PM, and BC emissions. It is also evident that the type of aromatic hydrocarbons has a large impact on BC emissions. Reduction in combustion efficiency resulted in reduced CO2 emissions and increased CO and THC emissions from this engine with increasing altitudes. PN emissions were moderately influenced by altitude but PM and BC emissions were significantly reduced with increasing altitude. The reduced BC emissions with increasing altitude could be a result of reduced combustion temperature which lowered the rate of pyrolysis for BC formation, which is supported by the NOx reduction trend.

The application of secondary NOx control methods in medium to low-capacity furnaces is a relatively new topic on the energy market and thus requires further research. In this paper, the results of full-scale research of SNCR and hybrid SNCR + SCR methods applied into a 29 MWth solid fuel fired stoker boiler is presented. The tests were performed for a full range of boiler loads, from 33% (12 MWth) to 103% (30 MWth) of nominal load. A novel SNCR + SCR hybrid process was demonstrated based on an enhanced in-furnace SNCR installation coupled with TiO2-WO3-V2O5 catalyst, which provides extra NOx reduction and works as an excess NH3 “catcher” as well. The performance of a brand-new catalyst was evaluated in comparison to a recovered one. The emission of NOx was reduced below 180 mg NOx/Nm3 at 6% O2, with ammonia slip in flue gas below 10 mg/Nm3. Special attention was paid to the analysis of ammonia slip in combustion products: flue gas and fly ash. An innovative and cost-effective method of ammonia removal from fly ash was presented and tested. The main idea of this method is fly ash recirculation onto the grate. As a result, ammonia content in fly ash was reduced to a level below 6.1 mg/kg.

The present work examines the possible use of fly ash, a byproduct of coal power stations, as a means of removing phenol from water, or equivalently, of restricting its movement in solid wastes or soil. Equilibrium experiments were performed to evaluate the removal efficiency of fly ash. The adsorption experiments were undertaken using fly ash treated at three different pH levels and with three different temperatures. The results indicate that although phenol can be removed from water, this depends markedly on the temperature and pH value of the treatment solution employed.

Coal-fired power stations are one of the primary sources of power generation in the world. This will produce considerable amounts of fly ash from these power stations each year. To highlight the potential environmental hazards of these materials, this study is carried out to evaluate the characterization of fly ashes produced in thermal power plants in northern Vietnam. Fly ash was firstly fractionated according to size, and the fractions were characterized. Then, each of these fractions was analyzed with regard to their mineralogical features, morphological and physicochemical properties. The analytical results indicate a striking difference in terms of the characteristics of particles. It was found that magnetic fractions are composed of magnetite hematite and, to a lower rate, mullite, and quartz. Chemical analyses indicate that the non-magnetic components mainly consist of quartz and mullite as their primary mineral phases. As the main conclusion of this research, it is found that the magnetic and non-magnetic components differ in terms of shape, carbon content and mineralogical composition. In addition, it was found that magnetic components can be characterized as more spheroidal components compared to non-magnetic ones. This comprehensive characterization not only offers a certain guideline regarding the uses of different ash fractions but it will also provide valuable information on this common combustion process.
