Several countries experience difficulties in overcoming the effects of natural disasters amid the Covid-19 pandemic, such as Typhoon Hagibis in Japan, floods due to melting snow in Canada, Typhoons in Bangladesh, and Cyclone Harold in Pacific countries. Natural disasters that affected the world during infectious diseases did not only occur in 2020. Earthquakes struck Haiti during the 2010 Cholera epidemic outbreak and respiratory infections during the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Something similar happens in Indonesia, one of which is flood and tidal flood in Pekalongan that occur during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study reviews the efforts of countries in overcoming natural disasters during the pandemic. It aims to propose an approach for flood disasters preparedness in Pekalongan so that disaster preparedness process including victim evacuation, can be done without increasing the spread of Covid-19. Information about humanity, disaster management, health, water and sanitation that are disseminated to the public must be supported by scientific knowledge to avoid the spread of myths and negative stigma. Coordination between stakeholders and the local community plays the most important role in flood disaster preparedness with the Covid-19 protocol during the pandemic.

In Vitruvius’ treatise, what makes good architecture is its ability to communicate to the public particular messages that reflects the program of the building with spaces and components arranged in an orderly way. According to Vitruvius these messages when acknowledges by the public the building posses strong character. This research discusses this idea by reflecting on the 1895 competition of the Egyptian Museum project. Marcel Dourgnon, the French architect of the winning scheme, showed profound understanding of character resulting in a building that had positive vibe with the local community.  Today Vitruvius’ idea is still living with us. Norman Foster succeeded in upgrading the British Museum in a way that addressed all cultures of the world through his grand atrium design.  Similarly, Emad Farid and Ramez Azmy revived the presence of the Egyptian Museum in public cognition.  Spatial experience that evokes similar perceptions to all its visitors is a timeless piece that transcends cultural boundaries.

The world with vast continental landmasses and having diversified topographic structures is bound to face a multiplicity of natural hazards on local to regional scale. Natural events of such adverse effects on human property and life have led us to conceptualize these as disasters. The trend analysis of the last 100 years over the earth reveals the fact that much has been changed by natural disasters with an average occurrence of 7 in 1914 to 341 disasters in 2014 per continent on a global scale. The present study focuses on how frequent disasters have continued to harm our environment and up to what extent threatened the sustainability of humanity in the last ten decades. The available data on past natural calamities have been studied to gauge the intensity and effects of these hazards and realizing a better way to mitigate them by educating all for disasters and disaster management as this will ensure timely disaster preparedness in general. Each disaster occurs at the backdrop of some science in it. This necessitates natural disasters as a probable area of concern which awaits intrinsic study and investigations with enough scientific aptitude and inquiry in science education of our country. The origin of such events of unforeseen calamities is set in one country, but its effects on howsoever mild or severe are widespread trans-nationally. To understand, mitigate, and to manage them finally lies with the scientific community at our disposal.

Flood disasters have become one of the most threatening natural disasters in the world, in which waterlogging is the most common form in the context of highly urbanized megacities. The formation of flood disaster is related to many factors and involves information from multiple sources, making it difficult be predicted. This paper integrates multi-source information data, classifies the study area into different categories according to hydrological analysis results, and combines hydrodynamic theory and ArcGIS to get the quantitative prediction of the range and depth of waterlogging under different rainfall inputs. The evaluation results provide the government with accurate and timely information of waterlogging risks and locations in order to improve promptness of emergency management such as evacuation and managing traffics.

The World Wide Web disseminates scientific knowledge. The possibility of searching and retrieving simultaneously scientific publications tends to promote research and ensures originality. The traditional publishing model restricted research to published subscription-based journals, thus providing scientific information only to financially sound communities. In response to this, the Open Access movement was created, which is an economical way of diffusion and management of scientific information. As a result, scientific information is now available to all for free spreading research activity worldwide, while encouraging communication and interoperability in areas of diverse research interests. This article discusses the phenomenon of open access. Also, open access journals and repositories are referred as well as modern ways of disseminating research to the public.

AbstractVibrio cholerae is a natural inhabitant of aquatic ecosystems worldwide, typically residing in coastal or brackish water. While more than 200 serogroups have been identified, only serogroups O1 and O139 have been associated with epidemic cholera. However, infections other than cholera can be caused by nonepidemic, non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae strains, including gastroenteritis and extraintestinal infections. While V. cholerae can also survive in freshwater, that is typically only observed in regions of the world where cholera is endemic. We recently isolated V. cholerae from several locations in lakes and rivers in northwest Ohio. These isolates were all found to be non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae strains, that would not cause cholera. However, these isolates contained a variety of virulence genes, including ctxA, rtxA, rtxC, hlyA, and ompU. Therefore, it is possible that some of these isolates have the potential to cause gastroenteritis or other infections in humans. We also investigated the relative motility of the isolates and their ability to form biofilms as this is important for V. cholerae survival in the environment. We identified one isolate that forms very robust biofilms, up to 4x that of our laboratory control strains. Finally, we investigated the susceptibility of these isolates to a panel of antibiotics. We found that many of the isolates showed decreased susceptibility to some of the antibiotics tested, which could be of concern. While we do not know if these isolates are pathogenic to humans, increased surveillance to better understand the public health risk to the local community should be considered.ImportanceThis study found that Vibrio cholerae belonging to non-O1/non-O139 serogroups is present in freshwater lakes and rivers in northwest Ohio. Although non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae strains generally do not produce cholera toxin, and thus do not cause epidemic cholera, they often contain other virulence factors that may contribute to pathogenicity. In fact, we found that these local isolates contained an assortment of potential virulence genes. We also found that some of the isolates showed antibiotic resistance. While we do not currently know if the local V. cholerae strains are capable of causing disease in humans, increased monitoring for V. cholerae in the region is warranted in the interest of public health.

Natural disasters are something that is not easy to predict, and one of them is a flood. It is found that the frequency of floods that have occurred in Indonesia is 505 times the total of 1824 natural disasters. Disaster risk reduction is the concept of how people minimise accidents and victims affected by disasters. One example of disaster risk reduction is to provide knowledge to the public about disaster evacuation and prevention before an emergency occurs. The objective of this study is to utilise gamification to increase user effectiveness. The method of gamification is the science used to learn, along with the increasing interest in learning. Gamification is applicable in several fields; one of them is crisis management and emergency training. The gamification is applied by utilising mechanical games, dynamic games, and gamification elements. The results showed that gamification could increase the effectiveness in terms of time by 89.77% of information and education about disaster risk and disaster preparedness to the public. This re-search was conducted at the disaster preparedness participant school with 65 participants, along with 21 communities affected by the flood disaster. Based evaluations on aspects of usefulness (UU), Ease of use (EU), Ease of learning (UL), and satisfaction (US) aspects of usefulness have the highest value because with the application the participant feels helped and can learn the dangers of disaster and preparation for disaster.
