The state of litter of large white pigs in industrial conditions was studied. Embryonic mortality is higher during the first 30 days of littering (21.6%) – in the period of histotrophic feeding of fetuses – before the beginning of placental connection formation. whereas during the whole period of pregnancy it is 38.4%. In a number of sows at different periods of littering. the number of corpus luteum and the number of fetuses from the side of the corresponding fertile horn do not coincide. that which indicates the migration of embryos into contralateral horn in the early timing of pregnancy. Fetuses growth rate is higher by the 45-days pregnancy. In the litter of pigs there are normotrophic (full-fledged. large-fetused). hypotrophic (small-weight) and stillborn pigs. There is close inverse relationship (r = -0.98 between fertility and full-fledgeness of piglets в гнездеin the nest. wherein the number of hypotrophic and stillborn ones as the number of newborns in the litter increases has direct positive correlation (r = + 0.98). The more piglets in the litter. the fewer full-fledged ones. and on the contrary. the number of hypotrophic and stillborns is increasing.

SUMMARYForty-eight gilts by Landrace sires on Large White × Landrace females were randomly allocated to eight pens and within pens to six treatment groups involving three diets and two levels of feeding from 23 to 59 kg live weight. All diets were formulated to have approximately the same ratio of digestible energy to crude protein (160 kcal DE/unit % CP) but different energy and protein concentrations: (A) 3500 kcal/kg DE and 21 % CP, (B) 3150 kcal/kg DE and 19% CP, and (C) 2800 kcal/kg DE and 17% CP. Amino acid balance was maintained relatively constant with synthetic lysine, methionine and tryptophan. The levels of feeding were such that the lower level of diet A allowed an intake of energy and protein similar to the higher level of diet B, and the lower level of B was similar to the higher level of C.On the lower level of feeding, growth rate, efficiency of feed conversion and carcass fat content increased linearly with each increment in nutrient concentration; on the higher level of feeding growth rate and EFC increased from diet C to B but not from B to A, whereas carcass fat content increased linearly with diet from the lowest to the highest concentration. There was a non-significant tendency for the higher density diets at a similar level of nutrient intake to give better EFC and fatter carcasses than the lower density diets.

(Correlation between progesterone levels in early luteal phase and embryonic death  in Aceh cattle) ABSTRACT. Progesterone is an important hormone that functions to maintain pregnancy and is produced by the corpus luteum. The aim of this study was to see a correlation between progesterone and the incidence of embryonic death in Aceh cattle. This study used four adult female cows, 3-5 years old, 150-250 kg body weight, clinically healthy, and have a normal reproduction. The synchronized with 5 ml prostaglandin F2 alfa hormone, and double injection pattern with 11-day intervals. The blood was collected for progesterone measurements on 5th, 6th, 7th day post artificial insemination. Measurement of progesterone concentration was carried out using an enzymelinked-immunoassay (ELISA), while pregnancy and embryo mortality was performed using the trans-rectal ultrasonography method on the 25th day after insemination. The examination was repeated every 10 days until day 55th after insemination. Progesterone secretion peaks in pregnant cows were on day 7th (2.082 ng/ml), in cattle Late Embryonic Mortality (LEM) on day 5th (8.209 ng/ml) and in cattle not pregnant on day 7th (3.051±1.157 ng/ml). The pattern of LEM progesterone secretion on days 5th to 7th tends to decrease while those that survive tend to increase.

The growth of litters from 19 Upton-Meishan (UM) and 16 Large White (LW) sows was recorded from birth to weaning (25 d of age). Water and feed intake of sows were recorded. Suckling behavior was studied on days 5 and 20 of lactation. Milk yield was measured on day 22 and a milk sample was obtained the next day. Water intakes were similar (P = 0.947) for both breeds, yet UM sows consumed less feed throughout lactation (P = 0.0002). Average piglet (P < 0.05) and total litter (P < 0.001) weights were greater as of day 7 in UM compared to LW sows. Mean piglet weight on day 24 was 6.13 ± 0.16 kg for UM litters and 5.33 ± 0.33 kg for LW litters. Suckling interval was similar for UM and LW litters on day 5 (P = 0.533), but was shorter for UM litters on day 20 (41.4 ± 1.2 vs. 48.3 ± 2.8 min; P= 0.060). On day 22, daily milk yield corrected for actual suckling interval was greater (10.59 ± 0.47 vs. 8.03 ± 0.65 kg; P = 0.003) in UM sows. Milk from UM sows contained more fat (P= 0.042) and lactose (P = 0.005). In conclusion, the greater growth rate of piglets from UM sows is mainly due to a higher frequency of nursings and to greater energy content of milk. Key words: Sows, lactation, breed, Meishan, behavior, nursing

Centrioles are highly structured organelles whose size is remarkably consistent within any given cell type. New centrioles are born when Polo-like kinase 4 (Plk4) recruits Ana2/STIL and Sas-6 to the side of an existing “mother” centriole. These two proteins then assemble into a cartwheel, which grows outwards to form the structural core of a new daughter. Here, we show that in early Drosophila melanogaster embryos, daughter centrioles grow at a linear rate during early S-phase and abruptly stop growing when they reach their correct size in mid- to late S-phase. Unexpectedly, the cartwheel grows from its proximal end, and Plk4 determines both the rate and period of centriole growth: the more active the centriolar Plk4, the faster centrioles grow, but the faster centriolar Plk4 is inactivated and growth ceases. Thus, Plk4 functions as a homeostatic clock, establishing an inverse relationship between growth rate and period to ensure that daughter centrioles grow to the correct size.

Background: Premature ovarian failure (POF) refers to pathological amenorrhea before 40 years. Aim/Objective: To explore regulatory effect of Rg1 on POF and clarify associated mechanisms. Materials and methods: POF mice were induced by injecting with D-galactose (D-gal, 200 mg/kg/day). Mice were divided into phosphate buffered saline (PBS), D-gal (POF mice), D-gal/Rg1 group (POF mice administrating D-gal/Rg1). Weight growth rate and ovarian weight coefficient were measured. Serum estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) levels were examined using ELISA. Status of follicle and corpus luteum was determined using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. P16INK4a and silent-mating type information regulation-2 homolog-1 (SIRT1) was determined using western blotting and RT-PCR. Findings: Weight growth rate and ovarian weight coefficient of mice in D-gal group were significantly decreased than PBS group (p<0.05). Serum E2, LH, SOD, CAT levels were significantly decreased, FSH levels were remarkably increased in D-gal group than PBS group (p<0.05). Rg1 (D-gal/Rg1 group) significantly increased weight growth rate and ovarian weight coefficient, enhanced E2, LH, SOD, CAT levels and decreased FSH levels than D-gal group (p<0.05). HE staining demonstrated normal follicle morphology/structure of mice in PBS group and decreased number of follicles, obvious vacuolation of corpus luteum and increased atretic follicles of mice in D-gal group. Compared with D-gal group, number of follicles was increased, luteal follicles was decreased of mice in D-gal/Rg1 group (p<0.05). Rg1 significantly (D-gal/Rg1) downregulated p16INK4a and upregulated SIRT1 expression in ovarian tissues of mice compared to D-gal group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Rg1 could delay premature ovarian failure in D-gal induced POF mouse model through downregulating p16INK4a and upregulating SIRT1 expression.

DNA-based markers and genetic maps of major livestock species have been developed in the last few years. These, together with experimental populations and appropriate statistical methods, provide the tools to dissect causes of economically important genetic variation in livestock. A cross between genetically diverse lines is a powerful experimental design for such a study. In an F2 or backcross population from such a cross, markers are likely to be highly informative and the genes that control the differences between the lines will be segregating. We have been developing such a resource population based on a cross between the British Large White and Chinese Meishan pigs. These breeds differ for many traits, with the Meishan being inferior for growth rate and fatness, but superior for reproduction traits. Here we report the mapping of major genetic effects on growth rate and fatness in our cross.

AbstractGenes from the Chinese Meishan pig have the potential to enhance reproductive performance of European pigs. In order to allow prediction of the impact of Meishan genes in a range of alternative improvement programmes all traits of economic importance must be evaluated and genetic crossbreeding effects estimated. Entire male and female pigs of four genotypes, purebred Meishan (MS) and Large White (LW) pigs and both reciprocal Fl crossbred genotypes (MS ♂ × LW ♀ and LW ♂ × MS ♀), were farrowed in Edinburgh and subsequently performance tested at either Edinburgh or Newcastle. In Edinburgh, animals were penned in groups of four and fed ad libitum between pen mean weights of approximately 30 and 80 kg. At the end of test fat depths at the shoulder, last rib and loin were measured ultrasonically. In Newcastle, animals were penned in groups of six and fed ad libitum between pen mean weights of approximately 30 and 70 kg. Genotypic means and genetic crossbreeding effects (additive and heterosis direct effects and additive maternal effects) were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood. When compared with the LW, the direct additive effect of genes from the MS produced increased growth rate up to the time of weaning, no change in growth rate between weaning and start of test and greatly reduced growth rate during the performance test. The maternal additive effect of genes from the MS was to reduce growth rate up to the time of weaning, with little effect thereafter. There was substantial direct heterosis for growth rate in all periods measured, but heterosis was less in males than in females during the performance test. The combined effect was such that, within sex, the LW and the two crossbred genotypes were of similar ages when they reached 70 and 80 kg, but MS pigs were 38 to 60 days older. The direct additive effect of MS genes was to increase subcutaneous fat levels and there was little evidence for the effects of maternal genes or direct heterosis on these traits. There was a direct additive effect of MS genes reducing food intake and increasing food conversion ratio and there was direct heterosis for increased food intake. There were significant interactions between genotype and sex. Male and female LW pigs had a similar performance but male MS pigs had slower growth rates on the performance test with lower food intakes, food conversion ratios and subcutaneous fat levels than the females.

Responses in sow traits at farrowing and during lactation and in pre-weaning piglet growth rate were determined in a population of Large White pigs, after seven generations of divergent selection for components of efficient lean growth rate. Information on the factors influencing preweaning piglet growth rate is required for a comprehensive evaluation of alternative selection strategies. There were four selection groups: daily food intake (DFI), lean food conversion (LFC), lean growth rate (LGA) on ad-libitum feeding and lean growth rate on scale feeding (LGS). There were 242 gilts in the study, with 20 gilts in the high, low and control lines of each selection group. Pigs in the ad-libitum selection groups were performance tested over a fixed weight range of 30 to 85 kg. Pigs fed on scale feeding were performance tested for a fixed time period of 84 days from 30 kg with food intake equal to 0.75 g/g of daily ad-libitum food intake. Matings were unsupervised and took place in outside paddocks.
