Magic of signs: a non-local interpretation of homeopathy

AbstractAmong homeopaths the common idea about a working hypothesis for homeopathic effects seems to be that, during the potentization process, ‘information’ or ‘energy’ is being preserved or even enhanced in homeopathic remedies. The organism is said to be able to pick up this information, which in turn will stimulate the organism into a self-healing response. According to this view the decisive element of homeopathic therapy is the remedy which locally contains and conveys this information. I question this view for empirical and theoretical reasons. Empirical research has shown a repetitive pattern, in fundamental and clinical research alike: there are many anomalies in high-dilution research and clinical homeopathic trials which will set any observing researcher thinking. But no single paradigm has proved stable enough in order to produce repeatable results independent of the researcher. I conclude that the database is too weak and contradictory to substantiate a local interpretation of homeopathy, in which the remedy is endowed with causal-informational content irrespective of the circumstances. I propose a non-local interpretation to understand the anomalies along the lines of Jung's notion of synchronicity and make some predictions following this analysis.

In this paper, three bio-mineralization mechanisms were proposed to repair cement-based materials cracks. The common feature is that the three are all induced by bacterial. A type of bacterial which can decompose urea and release carbonate ions could be applied to repair micro cracks on concrete surface when combining calcium ions. But what need to be noted is that the way of repairing cracks is passive. Some alkaliphilic bacterial spores could be added to concrete when casted and two different types of bacterial were used to realize the function of self-healing. The sources of carbonate ions made them different, the one release carbonate dioxide through its own cellular respiration, the other could transfer carbon dioxide in air to bicarbonate. Coefficient of capillary suction, apparent water permeation coefficient and area repairing rate were applied to characterize the repairing effectiveness. The tests results were that all three bio-mineralization mechanisms showed excellent repair effect to small cracks formed at early ages. When the bacteria were immobilized by ceramsite, the self-healing effect could be improved for the cracks formed at late ages.

Synthetic oligomers and polymers inspired by the multifunctional tethering system (byssus) of the common mussel (genus Mytilus) have emerged since the 1980s as a very active research domain within the wider bioinspired and biomimetic materials arena. The unique combination of strong underwater adhesion, robust mechanical properties and self-healing capacity has been linked to a large extent to the presence of the unusual α-amino acid derivative l-DOPA (l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) as a building block of the mussel byssus proteins. This paper provides a short overview of marine biofouling, discussing the different marine biofouling species and natural defenses against these, as well as biomimicry as a concept investigated in the marine antifouling context. A detailed discussion of the literature on the Mytilus mussel family follows, covering elements of their biology, biochemistry and the specific measures adopted by these mussels to utilise their l-DOPA-rich protein sequences (and specifically the ortho-bisphenol (catechol) moiety) in their benefit. A comprehensive account is then given of the key catechol chemistries (covalent and non-covalent/intermolecular) relevant to adhesion, cohesion and self-healing, as well as of some of the most characteristic mussel protein synthetic mimics reported over the past 30 years and the related polymer functionalisation strategies with l-DOPA/catechol. Lastly, we review some of the most recent advances in such mussel-inspired synthetic oligomers and polymers, claimed as specifically aimed or intended for use in marine antifouling coatings and/or tested against marine biofouling species.

The Italian seismic compilations are among the most complete and back-in time extended worldwide, with earthquakes on record even before the Common Era. However, we have surely lost the memory of dozen strong events of the historical period, mostly in the first millennium CE. Given the lack of certain or conclusive written sources, besides paleoseismological investigations, a complementary way to infer the occurrence of lost earthquakes is to cross-check archaeoseismic evidence from ancient settlements. This usually happens by investigating collapses/restorations/reconstructions of buildings, the general re-organization of the urban texture, or even the abrupt abandonment of the settlement. Exceptionally, epigraphs mentioning more or less explicitly the effects of the earthquake strengthened the field working hypothesis. Here, I deal with both paleoseismological clues from the Monte Marzano Fault System (the structure responsible for the catastrophic, Mw 6.9 1980 earthquake) and archaeoseismological evidence of settlements founded in its surroundings to cast light on two poorly known earthquakes that occurred at the onset and at the end of the first millennium CE, likely in 62 and in 989 CE. Both should share the same seismogenic structure and the size of the 1980 event (Mw 6.9).

Equating of psychometric scales and tests is frequently required and conducted in educational, behavioral, and clinical research. Construct comparability or equivalence between measuring instruments is a necessary condition for making decisions about linking and equating resulting scores. This article is concerned with a widely applicable method for examining if two scales or tests cannot be equated. A latent variable modeling method is discussed that can be used to evaluate whether the tests or parts thereof measure latent constructs that are distinct from each other. The approach can be routinely used before an equating procedure is undertaken, in order to assess whether equating could be meaningfully carried out to begin with. The procedure is readily applicable in empirical research using popular software. The method is illustrated with data from dementia screening test batteries administered as part of two studies designed to evaluate a wide range of biomarkers throughout the process of normal aging to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Field observations on the polygenetic conglomerates associated with the ophiolitic complexes in the Eastern Townships are comparable to those on the common slope facies in the present-day ocean bottom. Sedimentary processes (submarine erosion, deposition) are probably responsible for the internal structures of the conglomerates. This working hypothesis replaces the explosion-origin interpretation previously proposed. [Journal Translation]

If there were one lacking or insufficient issue which conscious medical orientated homeopaths could regret, it would be probably high quality clinical research. A big part of the homeopathic community still insists in the traditional ways of building knowledge, leading us nowhere. There is now an agreement between clinical researchers that there have been done enough efforts with Randomized Control Trials (RCT). But what we need today is good quality scientific research that could improve our daily practice. This article introduce the REDIMEH, an Ibero-American Integrative Network for Clinical Research in Homeopathy, horizontal in structure, with no political objectives, with the only intention of joining efforts in order to obtain enough clinical data to draw out valid conclusions. The main purpose of this article is to analyse the relationship between financial accountability and legally determined expenditure. According to the adopted research hypothesis, increasing the financial accountability requires taking specific actions in the field of the legally determined expenditure. As the article is theoretical, it does not present the results of the empirical research; the formal-dogmatic method was used to interpret the content of legal acts and jurisprudence of the Constitutional Tribunal, as well as the non-obstructive method to analyse the foreign and Polish literature presenting the results of both theoretical and empirical research. In the article, having presented in the introduction the methodological issues, first, the principle of common good, the financial accountability, and the legally determined expenditure will be first explained. Next, the solutions for the rationalization of the legally determined expenditure will be proposed. We conclude that their implementation should increase the financial accountability to strengthen the constitutional principle of the common good.

Pedagogical and curricular beliefs and commitments are expressions of deeper philosophical and ideological worldviews that empirical research can sometimes modify but not ultimately eliminate. The pluralism these views produce is reasonable in that they all represent plausible interpretations of liberal-republican values and professional standards of practice; they should be granted some room to flourish under a system of carefully regulated autonomy and choice. Three objections to a conception of school choice grounded in a notion of reasonable pluralism among educational doctrines are addressed: 1) that it would undermine educators' efforts to secure status for themselves as professionals by admitting that “best practices” in education offer rough guidance at best; 2) that it would leave parents and students vulnerable to quackery; 3) that it abandons the common school tradition and its aspirations. I conclude with an examination of why the conceptual basis on which a society designs a system of choice makes a difference.
