Environmental Context. Phytoremediation, the process of using plants to remove metals from contaminated soils, shows promise as a low-technology method for economically removing arsenic, and other toxic metals, from soil. Arsenic transport studies in vascular plants have examined how arsenic is taken up, chemically modified, and transported from roots to other parts of the plant. No studies, to our knowledge, have examined the effect of low-level doses of arsenic on the roots themselves. This paper shows, for the first time, that arsenic at low levels may beneficially affect root development. Abstract. Corn (Zea mays) roots were grown in culture on modified Strullu–Roman medium in two separate experiments. Roots were exposed to one of four treatments combining arsenic (100 µg L−1 or 0.0 µg L−1) and phosphorous (4.8 mg L−1 or 0.0 mg L−1). The cultures were allowed to grow for 18 days or 21 days before they were used for quantitative measurement of root mass, root length, number of branches, and branch length. Results indicate roots grown in medium lacking phosphate but containing arsenic were longer and had greater mass than roots grown in medium with only phosphate. The data presented here suggest that arsenic at low levels might be beneficial for root development.

Sea cucumber is a “healthy” food. Although previous studies have suggested that sea cucumber might serve as a potential rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) enriched phospholipid (PL), the molecular species of its PL has rarely been reported. In this study, some 200 glycerophospholipid (GP) species belonging to seven classes in processing by-products (spawns and intestines) of sea cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) were characterized for the first time. Most of the dominant GP species contained PUFAs, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4n-6). Meanwhile, the lipids contained high levels of PUFA (25.35–45.12% of total FAs) and polar lipid (65.55–85.95% of total lipids) but low levels of cholesterol (0.63–2.26% of total lipids). Among PL, phosphatidylcholine (38.34–65.56 mol%) was dominant. Therefore, PUFA enriched PL in sea cucumber may account for their nutritional and health beneficial effects. Meanwhile, by-products of Stichopus japonicus byproducts provide great potential as health-promoting food ingredients.

Purpose: to determine whether pre-surgical treatment using long-acting somatostatin analogues (SSAs) may improve surgical outcomes in acromegaly. Methods: retrospective study of 48 patients with acromegaly operated by endoscopic transsphenoidal approach and for first time. Surgical remission was evaluated based on the 2010 criteria. Results: most patients, 83.3% (n = 40), harbored macroadenomas and 31.3% (n = 15) invasive pituitary adenomas. In this case, 14 patients were treated with lanreotide LAR and 6 with octreotide LAR, median monthly doses of 97.5 [range 60–120] and 20 [range 20–30] mg, respectively, for at least 3 months preoperatively. Presurgical variables were comparable between pre-treated and untreated patients (p > 0.05). Surgical remission was more frequent in those pre-treated with monthly doses ≥90 mg of lanreotide or ≥30 mg of octreotide than in untreated or pre-treated with lower doses (OR = 4.64, p = 0.025). However, no differences were found between pre-treated and untreated patients when lower doses were included or between those treated for longer than 6 months compared to those untreated or pre-treated for shorter than 6 months. Similarly, no differences were found either in terms of surgical or endocrine complications (OR = 0.65, p = 0.570), independently of the doses and the duration of SSA treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions: the dose of SSAs is a key factor during pre-surgical treatment, since the beneficial effects in surgical remission were observed with monthly doses equal or higher than 90 mg of lanreotide and 30 mg of octreotide, but not with lower doses.

AbstractProgranulin (PGRN) is a protein with multiple functions including the regulation of neuroinflammation, neuronal survival, neurite and synapsis growth. Although the mechanisms of action of PGRN are currently unknown, its potential therapeutic application in treating neurodegenerative diseases is huge. Thus, strategies to increase PGRN levels in patients could provide an effective treatment. In the present study, we investigated the effects of AZP2006, a lysotropic molecule now in phase 2a clinical trial in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy patients, for its ability to increase PGRN level and promote neuroprotection. We showed for the first time the in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective effects of AZP2006 in neurons injured with Aβ1–42 and in two different pathological animal models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and aging. Thus, the chronic treatment with AZP2006 was shown to reduce the loss of central synapses and neurons but also to dramatically decrease the massive neuroinflammation associated with the animal pathology. A deeper investigation showed that the beneficial effects of AZP2006 were associated with PGRN production. Also, AZP2006 binds to PSAP (the cofactor of PGRN) and inhibits TLR9 receptors normally responsible for proinflammation when activated. Altogether, these results showed the high potential of AZP2006 as a new putative treatment for AD and related diseases.

AbstractPd$$_{3}$$ 3 Bi$$_{2}$$ 2 S$$_{2}$$ 2 (PBS) is a recently proposed topological semimetal candidate. However, evidence for topological surface states have not yet been revealed in transport measurements due to the large mobility of bulk carriers. We report the growth and magneto-transport studies of PBS thin films where the mobility of the bulk carriers is reduced by two orders of magnitude, revealing for the first time, contributions from the 2-dimensional (2D) topological surface states in the observation of the 2D weak anti-localization (WAL) effect in magnetic field and angle dependent conductivity measurements. The magnetotransport data is analysed within the 2D Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) theory. The analysis suggests that multiple conduction channels contribute to the transport. It is also found that the temperature dependence of the dephasing length can’t be explained only by electron-electron scattering and that electron-phonon scattering also contributes to the phase relaxation mechanism in PBS films.

We studied for the first time 16 tautomers/rotamers of diphosphocytosine by four computational methods. Some of these tautomers/rotamers are isoenergetic although they have different structures. High-level electron correlation MP2 and MP4(SDQ) ab initio methods and density functional methods employing a B3LYP and the new M06-2X functional were used to study the structure and relative stability of 16 tautomers/rotamers of diphosphocytosine. The dienol tautomers of diphosphocytosine are shown to be much more stable than the keto-enol and diketo forms. The tautomers/rotamers stability could be ranked as PC3 = PC12 < PC2 = PC11 < PC1 < PC10 < PC8 < PC9 < PC15 < PC16 < PC6 ~ PC7 < PC13 < PC4 ~ PC14 < PC5. This stability order was discussed in the light of stereo and electronic factors. Solvation effect has been modeled in a high dielectric solvent, water using the polarized continuum model (PCM). Consideration of the solvent causes some reordering of the relative stability of diphosphocytosine tautomers: PC3 ~ PC12 ~ PC2 ~ PC11 < PC1 < PC10 < PC8 < PC9 < PC15 ~ PC16 < PC13 < PC6 ~ PC7 ~ PC14 < PC4 ~ PC5.

Experiments were performed to determine whether visna/maedi virus (VMV), a small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV), could infect sheep via ocular tissues. The EV1 strain of VMV was administered into the conjunctival space of uninfected sheep, and the animals monitored for the presence of provirus DNA and anti-VMV antibodies in blood. The results showed that provirus DNA appeared in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of all animals within a few weeks of receiving either 106 TCID50 or 103 TCID50 of VMV. Of the animals receiving the higher dose of virus via the conjunctival space, two seroconverted by 7 and 10 weeks post-infection, one seroconverted 8 months post-infection, and one had not seroconverted by 15 months post-infection. With the lower virus dose, the animals infected via the trachea seroconverted by 4 and 14 weeks, respectively. After ocular infection with this dose, one animal showed a transitory seroconversion with low levels of antibody, peaking at 2 weeks post-administration. The remaining three of the animals infected via the eyes did not seroconvert over a period of 13 months. At post-mortem, evidence for the presence of proviral DNA was obtained from ocular tissue, lungs or mediastinal lymph node in both groups of animals. Histological analysis of lung tissue from animals receiving the lower dose of virus showed the presence of early inflammatory lesions. The results thus show for the first time that transmission of VMV can occur via ocular tissues, suggesting that the conjunctival space may be an additional route of natural transmission.

The premise for the present study lies in the lack of a unanimous scientific opinion on the relationship between self-knowledge and psychological well-being. The article presents the results of a study of the factors of psychological well-being of adolescents associated with their self-knowledge. The relevance of the conducted study is due to the need to integrate scientific knowledge on the internal factors contributing to psychological well-being. The scientific novelty is shaped by the fact that adolescents’ self-knowledge in the context of their psychological well-being is understudied and is examined for the first time. The study includes 500 adolescents aged 13-17 years old from schools in Tula, Lipetsk, and Moscow regions. The conducted factor analysis reveals common and specific factors of psychological well-being that are significant for adolescents with varying levels of psychological well-being. The common factors found in the entire sample are the desire for self-reflective analysis, for successful communication, for physical harmony, and for a meaningful perception of one’s future. The specific factors relevant for each group – adolescents with high, average, and low levels of psychological well-being – are also identified. The results of the analysis allow concluding that the psychological well-being of adolescents at different levels of psychological well-being is determined by factors related to self-knowledge. The presented work is of interest for researchers concerned with the problems of adolescents’ psychological well-being, as well as in designing educational programs and projects aimed at improving the psychological well-being of adolescents.

<p>Copper-based fungicides are commonly applied in vineyards to control fungal diseases that can severely affect grapevine productivity. Continuous application of this type of fungicides contributes to Cu accumulation in surface horizons of the soil, which can generate toxicity problems in plants, regardless of being an essential nutrient. Several strategies have been proposed to immobilize or counteract the effect of soil contaminants, such as plant inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). However, depending on the element concentration, this may not be sufficient to avoid its excessive accumulation in belowground and/or aboveground organs. Since Fe is known to have an antagonistic interaction with Cu in plants, Fe application, as an amendment, in vineyard soils, could be a good strategy to avoid excessive Cu uptake by grapevines growing in Cu-contaminated soils. However, little information is available on the combined effects of both strategies.</p><p>In order to reveal the possible beneficial effects of plant mycorrhization and Fe application in Cu-contaminated soils on grapevine growth and nutrition, a mesocosm experiment was established under controlled conditions. Two-year-old plants, previously inoculated or not with two different AMF, were grown in pots filled with 6.5 kg of an Arenosol collected from a wine-growing region. These plants were subjected to three soil treatments: 1) soil contamination with Cu, where the grapevines were watered with a solution containing 5.89 mg/L CuSO4 to ensure that the soil in each container reached 300 mg Cu/kg; 2) soil contamination with Cu + Fe addition, where the plants were watered with a solution that contained the same amount of CuSO4 plus 0.38 mg/L of FeNaEDTA&#183;3H2O to achieve 100 mg of Fe/kg soil; and 3) non-contaminated soil watered with deionized water. Four months later, at the end of the growing season, plant vegetative growth as well as leaf and root nutrient contents were analyzed.</p><p>Grapevines inoculated with AMF demonstrated a good level of tolerance to high Cu concentrations in soil, as they presented significantly higher root biomass than non-inoculated plants and Cu was mainly accumulated in the roots avoiding its translocation to the aerial part. However, when the Cu-contaminated soil was amended with Fe, a significant decrease was observed in root biomass in all mycorrhizal inoculation treatments and Cu was accumulated in grapevine leaves. Contrastingly, Fe application helped to avoid the excessive increase of Mn concentrations in leaf and roots that is commonly induced in Cu contaminated soils, which can be detrimental for grapevine growth.</p><p>These results demonstrated that mycorrhizal inoculation is a suitable strategy to promote grapevine growth in Cu-contaminated soils. However, special attention needs to be taken when applying amendments to correct Cu contamination, as the mycorrhizal status of plants may alter the expected outcome.</p><p>&#160;</p><div> <div>&#160;</div> </div>

THERE are presented herewith annual summaries of provisional vital statistics of the U.S.A. for 1954, as published by the National Office of Vital Statistics in Volume 3, Number 13, of the Monthly Vital statistics Report. These provisional figures are based on the data from monthly reports of certificates actually received in registration offices in the various states and cities. Previous experience shows that for the country as a whole these estimates will correspond very closely to the final rates when they are compiled. The provisional rates thus reflect the true position sufficiently well to allow their use for immediate planning purposes. Birth rates are shown in Figure 1, by monthly variation, comparing 1953 and 1954. Table 1 gives both numerical data and rates by the states in which the birth occurred. Information by place of residence, which is of course more significant, will be given in the final reports, which will be some time in appearing. In 1954 registered live births again reached an all time high, estimated at 4,021,000, compared to 3,909,000 in 1953. This is the fourth successive record-breaking year and the first time the registered number of births has surpassed 4 million. Predictions of several years ago that the birth rate would shortly begin dropping to the low levels of the 1930's were again proved wrong, for the estimated rate for 1954 was 25.0 per 1,000 population, as against a comparable figure of 24.7 in 1953.

In this work, we report for the first time on the influence of polyhedral oligomericsilsesquioxanes (POSS) on the structure and properties of liquid crystalline polyurethane (LCPU). LCPU/POSS hybrids were synthesized via a two-step method. In the first step, 4,4′-methylenephenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG) reacted with functionalized trisilanolphenyl POSS (TSP-POSS) bearing three hydroxyl groups. In the second step, the growing chain was extended with 4,4′-bis(hydroxyhexoxy)biphenyl (BHHBP). FTIR measurements confirmed the chemical bonding between the POSS and LCPU matrix and showed the influence of the silsesquioxane modification on the intensity of hydrogen bonds. The DSC and POM techniques confirmed the formation of liquid crystalline phases. The incorporation of silsesquixanes into the LC matrix leads to higher melting and isotropization temperatures along with the broadening phase transition effect. Scanning electron microscopy showed a good distribution of POSS moieties, both in the bulk and on the surface of the liquid crystalline PU matrix, whereby wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns revealed halos from both the liquid crystalline and unmodified polyurethane matrix. The stress at the breaking points for LCPU/POSS hybrids containing 50% and 60% of elastic segments is greater than the stress at the breaking point of the reference material (LCPU), what is due to good dispersion of POSS in less elastic matrix. Thermal properties of the LCPU/POSS materials obtained, determined by TGA, revealed that the char residue increased with the amount of POSS for 40% of elastic segments materials.
