Synoptic and dynamic analyses of classroom discourse

Abstract This paper explores the relationship between teachers’ theories of language and learning and the nature of classroom discourse. Through analysis of data collected from two year 3 classes, it is argued that there are three components functioning simultaneously in all lessons. These are the interpersonal, the content and the metalanguage components. The focus of the paper is on how the content and the metalanguage components are realized in the classroom discourse, and on the educational implications of the metalanguage component in particular. It is suggested that the quality of the metalanguage component has an impact on the overall quality of the language education program and that this impact derives from an appropriate theory of language use.

The issue of declining quality of education in Nigeria is of serious national concern and quality language education is not an exception. A wide range of factors have been pointed out by experts as being responsible for this situation. Our purpose in this paper is to discuss possible ways of improving on the quality of language education being that the quality of an educational system cannot transcend that of the teachers. The paper contends that for quality language education to be provided, the teacher must be effective; he must be well grounded in both language and literature to effectively impart quality language education. The paper examines the interwoven relationship between language and literature and postulates that merely having many years of classroom experience does not automatically make one an effective teacher. It also discusses several other methods that could be adopted in teaching so as to improve on the quality of language education being provided. The paper concludes that the delicate relationship between language, literature and effective teaching must be sufficiently appreciated by the language teacher in order for the objectives of language course to be attained.

AbstractThe relationship between typology and Cognitive Linguistics was first posed in the 1980s, in terms of the relationship between Greenbergian universals and the knowledge of the individual speaker. An answer to this question emerges from understanding the role of linguistic variation in language, from occasions of language use to typological diversity. This in turn requires the contribution of discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and evolutionary historical linguistics as well as typology and Cognitive Linguistics. While Cognitive Linguistics is part of this enterprise, a theory of language that integrates all of these approaches is necessary.

<p class="15bIsiAbstractBInggris">The character education program launched by the Government has not reaped encouraging results, as evidenced by the worsening moral decline that occurs in the midst of the nation's children, such as corruption, drug abuse, LGBT lifestyle, free sex association, fighting between students, students and villagers, intolerance among religious people, separatism that threatens the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia, and so forth.  The concept of education in imam al-Tirmiżî's al-Jâmi' al-Ṣaḥîḥ explains in detail the basic potential of man (heart, reason, taste, initiative and body), and explains the relationship between an individual and religious principles, with oneself and with his environment. The concept is very relevant to the purpose of national education, which is noble and morally praiseworthy to be able to improve the quality of individuals, families and communities to build a just and civilized national and state order, to further achieve the ideals of social justice for all Indonesians.</p><p class="16aJudulAbstrak"><strong>Abstrak  </strong>                                </p><p class="16cKataKunci">Program pendidikan karakter yang dicanangkan oleh Pemerintah belum menuai hasil yang menggembirakan, dibuktikan dengan semakin parahnya kemunduran moral yang terjadi di tengah-tengah anak bangsa, seperti korupsi, penyalahgunaan obat-obat terlarang, gaya hidup LGBT, pergaulan seks bebas, tawuran antar pelajar, mahasiswa dan warga kampung, intoleransi antar umat beragama, separatisme yang mengancam keutuhan NKRI, dan lain sebagainya.  Konsep pendidikan adab dalam kitab al-Jâmi’ al-Ṣaḥîḥ karya Imam al-Tirmiżî menerangkan secara terperinci dalam mengembangkan potensi dasar manusia (hati, akal, rasa, karsa dan raga), serta menjelaskan relasi antara seorang individu dengan prinsip-prinsip agama, dengan diri sendiri dan dengan lingkungannya. Konsep sangat relevan dengan tujuan pendidikan nasional, yangmana adab mulia dan akhlak terpuji mampu meningkatkan kualitas individu, keluarga dan masyarakat untuk membangun tatanan berbangsa dan bernegara yang berkeadilan dan beradab, untuk selanjutnya mencapai cita-cita keadilan sosial bagi seluruh rakyat Indonesia.</p>

This research was motivated by a student organization requires students to be active and independent role in running the holding organization. Students are expected to be able to contribute through his thinking in a student organization. The problem of this research is "How does the activity of the HIMA Education Program PPKn and there a relationship activeness of students in HIMA Education Program PPKn with achievement index of PPKn students on campus UNIPA Surabaya ".The goal is to determine the activity of the HIMA Education Program PPKn students and to determine the relationship of the activity of the HIMA Education Program PPKn student with student achievement index PPKn on campus UNIPA Surabaya. Activeness in this research is the students who are active as a board and as a member of HIMA PPKn UNIPA Surabaya. Achievement index in this research is the unit of ultimate value that describes the quality of teaching and learning process of each semester. In this study to measure the activity of students and grade is done by using questionnaires and documentation. Analyzed Data Technique using product moment correlation, the sample in this study consisted of 95 PPKn students UNIPA Surabaya year period 2015, 2016 , 2017. The data were obtained by questionnaire and documentation which there is a student IPK. Based on data analysis that has been done to produce a correlation coefficient -0,292 to 0,004 significant, because the significance < 0.05 then Ho is rejected and Ha accepted. This means that there is a significant correlation between the activity of the HIMA Education Program PPKn with achievement index of PPKn students in UNIPA Surabaya.

Studies with bilingual and multilingual subjects suggest that bilingualism and multilingualism foster the development of certain aspects of children’s metalinguistic skills. The purpose of the present study was to find out if learning foreign languages facilitates children’s metalinguistic ability to define words. It compared Bulgarian monolingual, bilingual and trilingual subjects on their word-definition performance in the L1. The relationship between L1 definition performance, L2/L3 proficiency, and L2/L3 definition performance within the bilingual and trilingual groups was also investigated. The study found that early foreign language education has a positive effect on the quality of children’s definitions in their L1. The bilingual and trilingual children performed significantly better than the monolingual children. The results specific to the bilingual and trilingual groups showed that second/third language proficiency was a significant and powerful predictor of the performance of the bilingual and trilingual subjects on the word-definition tasks in their second/third language. L1 word-definition ability was a weaker predictor of the subjects’ performance on the word-definition task in their second or third language. However, in the case of genetically closely related languages (Bulgarian and Russian) the transfer was easier as compared to genetically more distanced languages (Bulgarian and English).

Despite general belief about the importance of summary writing in foreign language education, and in the field of teaching Language for Academic Purposes (LAP) (e.g., Swales, 1981; 2000), it is shown that the development of this skill is one of the most difficult skills for learners (e.g., Brown and Day, 1980; Hirvela & Du, 2013; Shi, 2012). This study is part of a larger project and its main purpose is to open the black box by exploring the relationship between performances of summary writing in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and the strategies used for summary writing in EFL. A total of 74 Japanese high school EFL learners were asked to write a summary of one-third of approximately 230 word-long English passage and were subsequently asked to respond to the summary strategy inventory adapted partly from Li (2014). The data analysis showed that there was indeed a relationship between the quality of the students' summaries and the frequency of their implemented strategies. In this study, along with the results of in-depth analyses, various implications are offered to EFL education as well as future research studies.

Research interest in multilingual development and multilingual awareness (MLA) has been growing over the last years, and MLA has been defined as a key component of multilingual learning and multiple language use. The first part of the article focuses on the development of MLA in learners as a subcomponent of metacognition and a key factor of emergent properties in multilinguals as presented from a dynamic systems and complexity theory perspective in the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism (DMM) (Herdina and Jessner, 2002). The second part describes a DMM-based language teaching and learning approach, the Five Building Blocks of Holistic Language Education/Learning, which visualises the relationship between linguistic and cognitive processes and enables teachers and learners to reflect on language acquisition and use in order to develop MLA.

This study aims to determine code-mixing, code-switching, and Arabic interference in the Arabic language education program at the Ibnul Qoyyim Putri Islamic Boarding School in Yogyakarta. It is based on two arguments; First, code-mixing, code-switching, and language interference are language “diseases” that are sociological and will be hereditary, especially in a particular program. So far, studies on sociolinguistics have separated code-mixing, code-switching, and interference, even though all three are interrelated. This study raises two issues: the forms of code-mixing, code-switching, and interference, and the causes of these three things. This research is qualitative research, with the methods used in this research being observation, interviews, and documentation. While the theory used is Fishman’s sociolinguistic theory of language in a socio-cultural context. The results of this study indicate that; First, code-switching that occurs in Arabic education programs  Pondok Pesantren Ibnul Qoyyim Putri Yogyakarta is a form of code-switching at the word and phrase level, while the code-mixing that occurs is at the word level. The interference that occurs includes phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic interference. Second, code-switching, mixing, and interference in Arabic language education programs are caused by the instructors’ lack of a correct model and inadequate mastery of Arabic theory.

Abstract. Recently, Garfinkel and Critchley (2013) proposed to distinguish between three facets of interoception: interoceptive sensibility, interoceptive accuracy, and interoceptive awareness. This pilot study investigated how these facets interrelate to each other and whether interoceptive awareness is related to the metacognitive awareness of memory performance. A sample of 24 healthy students completed a heartbeat perception task (HPT) and a memory task. Judgments of confidence were requested for each task. Participants filled in questionnaires assessing interoceptive sensibility, depression, anxiety, and socio-demographic characteristics. The three facets of interoception were found to be uncorrelated and interoceptive awareness was not related to metacognitive awareness of memory performance. Whereas memory performance was significantly related to metamemory awareness, interoceptive accuracy (HPT) and interoceptive awareness were not correlated. Results suggest that future research on interoception should assess all facets of interoception in order to capture the multifaceted quality of the construct.
