1. An experiment was conducted in which sodium and calcium salts of acetic, propionic and butyric acids were given to groups of eight lambs as additions to basal diets of hay and concentrate. Two control groups were included, one group which received only the basal ration and one high-level control group which received sufficient additional concentrate to achieve growth rates greater than those of the groups receiving volatile fatty acid (VFA) salts. 2. With rumen-fistulated sheep, the effect on the rumen VFA composition and the pH of the rumen liquor, of diets supplemented with VFA salts given twice daily, was also investigated and compared with the effect of the basal diet alone. 3. The lambs receiving the VFA salts grew faster and achieved significantly greater empty body and carcass weights than those receiving only the basal rations; the high-level control group had significantly greater empty body and carcass weights than groups receiving salts of VFA. 4. There were no differences approaching significance in the efficiency of the three VFA in promoting gains in live weight, empty body weight and carcass weight. There appeared to be equal efficiency of utilization of the gross energy of the VFA and of the calculatedmetabolizable energy of the concentrates. 5. The effect of twice-daily feeding on the rumen VFA composition was that the concentration of the supple- mentary acid was greatest shortly after feeding, and about 5–6 h after feeding the effect was difficult to detect. There were no differences in the pH of the rumen liquor between animals given diets containing VFA salts and those given the basal ration.

Research has been carried out to study the influence of "ProBioKorm Uz", a biologically active feed additive, on the development and physiological characteristics of rabbits of ‘New Zealand’ breed. During the experiment, 2 experimental and a control groups were formed. Adding "ProBioKorm Uz" to the main feed at the rate of 1% and 2% had an increase in experimental group rabbits’ live weight. Average live weight of them was higher by 5,7 %-3.8% than in the control group. Feed units composed 1.59%, dry matter 0.56 kg (3.61%) and crude protein 0.11 kg (3.59%) compared with the control group. Rabbits of experimental groups had higher indicators of erythrocytes concentration by 0.34-1.00 1012/l (10.34-19.53%), leukocytes - by 0.370-0.46 109/l (5.66-8, 06%), as well as a high level of hemoglobin by 7.42-11.08 g/l (6.81-10.08%) and total protein - by 2.40-4.48 (3.64-6, 42%).

1. The effect, on the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the rumen, of increasing the frequency of feeding from twice daily to four or six times daily was investigated in sheep given isocaloric rations containing VFA salts. In a second experiment isocaloric rations containing acetate and propionate were given to groups of lambs in two or six equal feeds daily. The efficiency with which the lambs utilized the VFA salts was measured as gain in live weight, empty body weight and carcass weight and was compared to that of lambs receiving only the basal ration. The composition of the carcasses was estimated from that of the loin. 2. Increasing the frequency of feeding from twice daily to four or six times daily significantly reduced the marked changes in rumen VFA composition associated with giving rations containing VFA salts twice daily. In lambs receiving acetate and propionate, final live weight, empty body weight and carcass weight were significantly greater than in lambs receiving only the basal ration (P < 0.001). The combustible energy from added VFA was apparently utilized more efficiently than the calculated metabolizable energy of the basal rations given above maintenance level, and there was no difference between the utilization of acetate and propionate. 3. There were no differences approaching significance between feeding twice daily and six times daily either between groups of lambs receiving only the basal diet or between those given the diets supplemented with VFA salts. Nor were there any interactions between VFA and frequency of feeding. 4. It is postulated that in ruminants the effect of frequency of feeding depends on the environment and level of feeding.

Abstract Current study was conducted to investigate the influence of short-term and long-term feeding of high-level pea-hull fiber (PF) on the bacterial community and metabolites in the cecum of pigs. A total of 50 healthy weaned Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire piglets (7.2 ± 0.5 kg) were selected and randomly allocated in two groups with 5 replicates (5 piglets per replicate) in each group. Pigs in control group were given basal diets. For pigs in another group, expanded corn in the basal diet was replaced by PF at 10%, 20% or 30% for the post-weaning period (from weaning to 30 d post-weaning), growing period (30–90 d post-weaning), and finishing period (90–160 d post-weaning), respectively. At the end of the first and the last period, one pig from each replicate was sacrificed and the cecal digesta was collected immediately. Results showed that: 1) short-term or long-term intake of high-level PF had no significant effect on the ADFI and ADG of the pigs (P &gt; 0.05), but the F/G was significantly decreased in the long-term fed pigs (P &lt; 0.05). 2) The long-term feeding of PF significantly increased the concentration of cecal volatile fatty acids and decreased the ratio of propionate (P &lt; 0.05). 3) Compared with control group, the ratio of phylum Firmicutes in the cecum of piglets with short-term feeding of PF was reduced by 5.6%, with an increase of Bacteroides-Prevotella-Porphyromonas (BPP), Enterococcus, Clostridium cluster IV, Bacteroidetes, Lactobacillus and Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (P &lt; 0.05). While in the cecum of pigs with long-term feeding of PF, the ratio of phylum Bacteroidetes was increased by 4.8%, with an increase of D. desulfuricans (P &lt; 0.01) and a decrease of BPP, Helicobacter-Flexispira-Wollinella, Streptococcus, Enterococcus and Clostridium cluster I (P &lt; 0.05). Results indicate that bacteria in the hindgut of pigs can rapidly response to the high-level PF in the diet.

Abstract Resistant starch (RS) is fermentable by gut microbiota and effectively modulates fecal short-chain fatty acid concentrations in pigs, mice, and humans. RS may have similar beneficial effects on the canine gut, but has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4% dietary RS (Hi-maize 260) on apparent total tract macronutrient digestibility, and fecal characteristics, fermentative end-product concentrations, and microbiota of healthy adult dogs. An incomplete 5 x 5 Latin square design with 7 dogs and 5 experimental periods was used, with each treatment period lasting 21 d (d 0-17 adaptation; d 18-21 fresh and total fecal collection) and each dog serving as its own control. Seven dogs (mean age = 5.3 yr; mean BW = 20 kg) were randomly allotted to one of five treatments formulated to be iso-energetic and consisting of graded amounts of 100% amylopectin cornstarch, RS, and cellulose, and fed as a top dressing on the food each day. All dogs were fed the same amount of a basal diet throughout the study and fresh water was offered ad libitum. The basal diet contained 6.25% RS (DM basis), contributing approximately 18.3 g of RS/d based on their daily food intake (292.5 g DM/d). Data were evaluated for linear and quadratic effects using SAS. The treatments included 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% of an additional RS source. Because Hi-maize 260 is approximately 40% digestible and 60% indigestible starch, the dogs received the following amounts of RS daily: 0% = 18.3 g (18.3 g + 0 g); 1% = 20.1 g (18.3 g + 1.8 g); 2% = 21.9 g (18.3 g + 3.6 g); 3% = 23.7 g (18.3 g + 5.4 g); and 4% = 25.5 g (18.3 g + 7.2 g). Apparent total tract dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, fat, and gross energy digestibilities and fecal pH were linearly decreased (P &lt; 0.05) with increased RS consumption. Fecal output was linearly increased (P &lt; 0.05) with increased RS consumption. Fecal scores and fecal fermentative end-product concentrations were not affected by RS consumption. Although most fecal microbial taxa were not altered, Faecalibacterium were increased (P &lt; 0.05) with increased RS consumption. The decrease in fecal pH and increase in fecal Faecalibacterium would be viewed as being beneficial to gastrointestinal health. Although our results seem to indicate that RS is poorly and/or slowly fermentable in dogs, the lack of observed change may have been due to the rather high level of RS contained in the basal diet.

The objective of our study was to test amaranth grain or dried biomass in the diet for broiler chickens as a resource of protein replacing animal protein. Further, the effect of amaranth on broiler performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality were assessed in a feeding trial. The experimental groups of broilers were fed feed mixtures with crude amaranth grain (AC), heat processed amaranth grain (AP) or dried above-ground biomass (AB). Control groups (C) received the diet containing animal proteins. The results obtained in the experimental groups of broiler chickens can be compared to the control group in all the production indicators under investigation. On day 42 of the experiment, live weight (g) of female broilers ranged from 2 205.1 &plusmn; 152.5 (AP) to 2 254.0 &plusmn; 136.5 (C), and that of male broilers from 2 375.1 &plusmn; 233.0 (AC) to 2 506.0 &plusmn; 286.0 (C). Feed conversion ranged from 1.80 kg in control group of male broiler chickens to 1.91 kg in experimental group of male broilers (AB). Percentage yield in female broiler chickens ranged from 70.8 &plusmn; 1.74 (AB) to 72.4 &plusmn;3.34(AC) or 72.4 &plusmn; 1.98 (C), and in male broilers from 72.8 &plusmn;3.55(AP) to 75.1 &plusmn;2.44(AB). Our results showed that amaranth can fully replace meat-and-bone meals in the diets for broiler chickens.

Изучение влияния пробиотического препарата ЭМ-курунга на приросты, анализы крови и помёта птиц проведено на примере цыплят техасских белых перепелов. В качестве объекта исследований использовались цыплята перепелов, начиная с суточного возраста. Средняя масса цыплят на начало эксперимента составила 9,2±0,12 г. Цыплят забивали в возрасте 90 суток. Установлено, что введение в рацион цыплят пробиотического препарата ЭМ-курунга в количестве 0,2 мл на 1 кг живого веса увеличивает сохранность молодняка на 14,8% и приросты птенцов – на 10%. Сравнительный анализ биохимических данных опытной и контрольной групп птицы показал, что введение в рацион опытной группы пробиотика практически не повлияло на белковый обмен. Общий белок у опытной птицы был недостоверно меньше, по сравнению с контролем, на 1,25%, та же картина наблюдалась по уровню альбуминов – меньше на 1,9%, глобулинов – на 1%. Сравнительный анализ показателя кислотности кала птиц опытной и контрольной групп показал достоверное различие. Так, у контрольной группы рН кала имел среднее значение 6,5, у перепелов опытной группы – 7,5. Таким образом, у опытной птицы, в сравнении с контрольной, активная кислотность кишечного содержимого достоверно сдвинулась в слабощелочную сторону, что свидетельствует о благоприятном воздействии пробиотика на микрофлору желудочно-кишечного тракта перепелов, снижая уровень патогенной микрофлоры, активно развивающейся в кислой среде. The study of the effect of the probiotic preparation EM-Kurunga on gains, blood tests and poultry litter was carried out using the example of White Texas quail chickens. Quail chickens starting at daily age were used as the subject of research. The average weight of chickens at the beginning of the experiment was 9.2±0.12 g. Chickens were slaughtered at the age of 90 days. It was established that the introduction of the probiotic preparation EM-Kurunga into the diet of chickens in the amount of 0.2 ml per 1 kg of live weight increases the safety of young animals by 14.8% and the gains of poults – by 10%. A comparative analysis of the biochemical data of the experimental and control groups of poultry showed that the introduction of the probiotic into the diet of the experimental group had practically no effect on protein metabolism. The total protein in the experimental poultry was insignificantly less than in the control by 1.25%, the same pattern was observed in the level of albumin – less by 1.9%, globulins – by 1%. Comparative analysis of the acidity index of poultry feces from the experimental and control groups showed a significant difference. So, in the control group the pH of feces had an average value of 6.5, in the quails of the experimental group – 7.5. Thus, in the experimental poultry in comparison with the control one the active acidity of the intestinal contents significantly shifted to the slightly alkaline side, which indicates a favorable effect of the probiotic on the microbiota of the quail gastrointestinal tract, reducing the level of pathogenic microflora actively developing in an acidic condition.

The study was conducted to determine the influence of ginger powder and lime peel on manipulation of rumen function for live-weight gains of sheep. Twenty four West African dwarf sheep of about 8 – 9 months old with average weight of 7.00 ± 0.95kg were randomly assigned to four treatment diets in a completely randomized design. The prepared diets contained; ED1 (0% ginger powder and 0% lime peel powder that served as control group), ED2 (0% ginger powder and 3% lime peel), ED3 (1.5% ginger powder and 1.5% lime peel) and ED4 (3% ginger powder and 0% lime peel). In all the diets examined, ED1 showed higher significant (p<0.05) values in total fungi, Acetobact xylinum, Methanogens, total protozoa, Entodiniomorphs, Holotrichs, ammonia-nitrogen, total volatile fatty acids, acetate, butyrate and feed conversion ratio. However, total bacteria, Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus fibrisolvens, Bacillus spp, propionate, feed intake, nutrient digestibility, final and daily weight gains indicated significant (p<0.05) higher values in diet ED3 than diets ED1, ED2 and ED4. Rumen pH was significantly (p<0.05) higher in ED4 as compared with other diets. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in Fibrobacter succinogens, iso-butyrate, valerate, iso-valerate and initial weight among diets. It can be concluded that using 1.5% ginger powder and 1.5% lime peel in the diets enhanced rumen fermentation and ecology for growth performance of sheep.

The study was carried out to assess the effect of monensin sodium supplementation on rumen fermentation metabolites and milk yield in early lactating buffaloes. Twelve buffaloes in their 2nd week of lactation were selected. Control group was fed on standard ration whereas the treatment group was supplemented with monensin sodium @ 200 mg/head/day in addition to standard ration. Rumen liquor and blood sample was collected at 2nd and 12th week of lactation. Total and individual volatile fatty acids concentration was estimated by gas chromatography. Monensin sodium (P less than 0.05) decreases acetate and increases propionate concentration and decreases the ratio of acetate to propionate in the rumen liquor without altering the total volatile fatty acid concentration in experimental period. Supplemented buffaloes yielded 8.22 per cent more milk than the control.

Presented study results of the productivity of mixed-aged cows with prolonged lactation. The formation of experimental groups was carried out according to the principle of analog groups, taking into account breed, live weight, age and physiological condition (lactation):25 animals in groups I, II, III and IV and 10 animals in group V. It was found that with the industrial technology of Holstein cows exploitation, regardless of their age, the duration of the lactation period was almost twice as long as the scientifically substantiated value and ranges from 561.2 to 610.9 days. At the same time, the milk productivity level of the cows in I and IV groups slightly exceeded 13 000 kg of milk per lactation, while in cows if II, III (control), and V groups – this value was higher than 15 000 kg. With prolonged lactation, the milk yield in the experimental groups of animals in terms of 305 days was kept at a fairly high level and there was a definite tendency to an increase in milk yield depending on the age of the animals. The first-calf heifers of group I were characterized by a relatively low milk yield since they gave only 13 291.8 kg of milk for the entire lactation, and in terms of 305 days – 7 944.1 kg, which was 13.57% and compared to III (control) group was 19.54% lower (P < 0.01). Animals of the fifth lactation from group V had the highest milk yield, in which the milk yield per lactation and per 305 days amounted to 15 818.5 kg and 9 716.7 kg of milk, respectively. With intensive exploitation technology and with the increasing age of Holstein cows, complete adaptation occurs, as a result of which their genetic potential for milk production is realized at a high level. This was indicated by the milk yield dynamics in experimental animals of different ages, in which, under the same conditions of feeding and housing, they were gradually increased from the first to the fifth lactation.

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a cytosolic enzyme found in high concentrations in the liver. We investigated the value of plasma GST measurements in pre-eclamptic patients. A total of 80 patients (40 in the pre-eclampsia group and 40 in the control group) were recruited. All patients were evaluated for GST, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase. Pre-eclampsia was defined as the occurrence, after 20 weeks' gestation, of a diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mmHg on two or more occasions at least 4 h apart, and concomitant proteinuria greater than 0.3 g/l over a 24-h urine collection period. There was no statistical difference between the pre-eclampsia and control groups in terms of ALT, gestational age, maternal age or number of previous pregnancies; a significant difference was found between the pre-eclampsia and control groups in terms of GST. Pre-eclampsia represents a significant cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Accurate assessment of hepatocellular damage is essential in the clinical management of these patients. GST levels in pre-eclamptic patients were found to be much higher (131.98 IU/l) than in control patients (68.67 IU/l), and this high level suggests hepatocellular damage. We concluded that measurement of plasma GST might provide an earlier and much more sensitive indicator of hepatocellular damage than other liver-function tests.
