Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of specific internal states (i.e. the set of sustainable values and motivations) that underlie group formation and joint business idea identification of farmer groups in the context of Burundi. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative and qualitative data were combined in this study. Quantitative data were analyzed using basic statistics. Qualitative data were collected in focus group discussions with farmer groups. Findings Findings revealed that groups are not just formed on the basis of homophily (same level of internal states) but also on “compensation” and “committed leadership.” Moreover, prior sustainable behavior of members influences sustainability of new group business ideas and the nature (e.g. focus on farming) of that business idea. Research limitations/implications As this study was done at an early stage of group formation and does not include group dynamics over a longer period of time, further monitoring of the groups is needed to examine if the observed motivation persists. Originality/value Although there is a vast amount of literature on entrepreneurial and top management teams, literature on the (early) mechanisms of entrepreneurial group formation in an emerging economy and rural context is relatively scarce.

Group lending mechanisms have increasingly become popular among microfinance providers in recent years. This is largely due to its ability to leverage joint liability to increase loan repayments whilst promoting an entrepreneurial spirit among borrowers. Meanwhile, a group-lending mechanism is also very important in promoting women's empowerment through cooperative engagements of all group members. However, the effectiveness of the group lending methodology in the delivery of microfinance within a developing country context is largely under-researched. Using data from extensive focus groups interviews of women borrowers held in Nigeria among participants from 150 different groups, this article analyses the dynamics of group lending mechanism (group formation, peer monitoring, pressure and support). The article widens the current narrow literature on group leaders by providing a detailed empirical account of the activities of group leaders in a microfinance intervention. The findings showed that because group leaders are primarily held liable for loan delinquency of group members, they are more highly motivated than other members to monitor and pressure members. The results also suggest that while group leaders were found to perform vital roles, some of these group leaders abused their positions in ways that undermine group cohesion and microfinance sustainability. Lastly, the article introduces the “multiple card phenomenon” in group-based microfinance intervention.

Karo Regency is a center for horticulture production in North Sumatra with a total of 3,003 farmer groups. However, only 44 groups were in the "Continuation" class while the rest were in the "Beginner" class. To analyze these conditions, research was conducted in Barusjahe District, because the area had the best development of farmer groups (Bapeluh Karo District, 2014). Data obtained from extension agents and farmer groups were determined by the census method and purposive sampling. Furthermore, the data were processed using the scoring method on 49 indicators to determine the role of extension agents and 20 positive and negative statements to determine the attitude of members of farmer groups to the role of extension agents. The results showed that the total score of the instructor's role was 114.53 and included in the category of "midwife", and 72.22% of members of the farmer group were positive towards the role of the agriculture extension agents. This condition was an opportunity for the development of farmer groups in Barusjahe Subdistrict, but still needed to be improved in several obstacles such as awareness of administrators and group members, group member participation, planning and implementation of programs that had different commodities and land areas that were not in one overlay and suitability of facilities and infrastructure owned. It was expected that by improving these barriers, farmer groups in Barusjahe Sub-district could reach a higher class level.
