Chapter 1, “The Many Faces of Meiji Buddhist Enlightenment,” provides the historical and philosophical context for the emergence of Buddhist reform in the mid- to late-Meiji period by examining a variety of new ideas brought about by the profound social, political, economic, and religious transformations that shaped Japan in the two decades following the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Particularly important are the impact of Western thought, including Christianity, the emergence (in theory if not yet practice) of State Shinto, and the brief but traumatizing attempt to disestablish Buddhism by the state—i.e., the so-called haibutsu kishaku廃‎仏‎希‎釈‎ movement of the early 1870s. The chapter examines the various responses to these currents via the writings and activities of paradigm scholars and scholar-priests representing the so-called “Buddhist Enlightenment” of the late 1880s and 1890s.

This article introduces the concept of ‘strategic identity’ as a bridge between the indigenous peoples’ struggle for self-determination and their search for solidarity in the context of globalization, with a focus on the Lumads, or indigenous peoples in southern Philippines. The paper begins with an encounter with a global actor affecting a local community. We realize the impact of powerful, well-networked forces that challenge even the operation of the state. Without trivializing the threats associated with this model of globalization, we also insist that a realistic and hopeful approach may emerge if we acknowledge the many ‘selves’ in the indigenous peoples’ self-determination. At the heart of this proposal is a matrix that unpacks the complex ways that local, national, sectoral, and global actors can engage in conflict or solidarity with these strategic identity assertions. Solidarity work, then, becomes diversified and strategized in response to the evolving multiple indigenous identities that modernity paradoxically both endangers and engenders.

This chapter covers the birth and progression of Islamic statehood policy and governance. It begins by laying out a context for The Hijaz state. Chapter 1 crucially defines the key governance features in the Caliphate including leadership selection. It explores the idealized pre-modern state and the unique Islamic “nationalist historiography” going back over 1500 years to examine the transitions and development of Islam, the Shari’a objectives of statecraft and the political economic evolution of the state.

This chapter examines the political-economic problems that France faced in the aftermath of the Golden Age. These political-economic problems persisted and precipitated what some people described as a crisis of ideas within the state—the realization that the statist knowledge regime was too insulated and therefore suffered a lack of fresh thinking. In turn, policymakers began to encourage the development of new semi-public policy research organizations outside the state as well as new ones inside it in an effort to cultivate new ideas. This externalization strategy was very much a part of France's move away from dirigisme—central state-led economic development—and involved the gradual if partial separation of the knowledge regime from the policymaking regime, which earlier had been virtually indistinguishable from each other.

The presidential cabinet system adopted by the Indonesia people has its own characteristics, namely the presidential cabinet system that is paired with a free multi-party system. The impact of the choice of system turned out to hamper the performance of the presidential cabinet, because of the many interventions of the coalition party members to the ministers who were in the cabinet. Not to mention that many laws and regulations have narrowed the President’s space in carrying out his authority that originated in the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. Of course, the state and conditions of the constitution like this, severely hampered the cabinet in realizing its vision and missions. This paper will examine how to make the Indonesian presidential cabinet system work effectively.

Article visualizations:

Chapter 1 explores the impact of the Oath of Supremacy, looking at two trials, those of Thomas More and Anne Boleyn, which resulted from the astonishing changes precipitated by Henry’s decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon, forcing English men and women to wonder how honest they could be about their loyalties and precipitating a crisis concerning the nature of speech and language in public culture. The chapter explores these two important trials in terms of the Reformation, showing how arguments about truth and lying became particularly significant as the King assumed the right to rule the Church as well as the state. Uncovering the truth of each trial may be less important than understanding that they are about truth and whose right it is to declare what is truth and what lies.

The article discusses the ways of representing of state symbols in the postcards of Japan during Meiji period (1868–1912). On the basis of their visual design the ways of constructing the image of the new government are considered. After the “Meiji restoration”, the state symbols were adopted (based on the old ka-mon family emblems): the national flag, the emperor’s seal, orders and medals. The post service belonged to the state, which allowed the images to show not only the actual state symbols but also in what situations it should be used and how it should be perceived. These tasks were implemented by artistic means. The different types of symbols on postcards were distributed unevenly. The most diverse subjects are related to the national and army flags. It depicted not only war but also the everyday “peaceful” life. The documentary photo, the decorative drawings of emblems, the real peoples and fantastic animals were used for the decoration. Through the positive emotions were transmitted (pride, joy, interest, etc.). Japan is represented there as the modern, internally cohesive state with the irresistible military power, fully supported by the population, with state symbols that preserve continuity with the past.

This book analyzes the ideas of a prominent twentieth century reformer, Haji Abdullah Malik Abdul Karim Amrullah, more commonly known as Hamka. It employs the term “cosmopolitan reform” to describe Hamka’s attempts at harmonizing the many streams of Islamic and Western thought and his diagnoses as well as solutions to the various challenges facing Muslims in the Malay world. Among the major themes explored in this book are questions concerning reason and revelation, moderation and extremism, social justice, the state of women in society, Sufism in the modern age as well as the importance of history in reforming the minds of modern Muslims. This book shows that Hamka demonstrated intellectual openness and inclusiveness towards a whole range of thoughts and philosophies to develop his own imaginary and vocabulary of reform. This attests to his cosmopolitan outlook and his unique ability to function as a conduit for varying Islamic and secular groups that were opposing one another in his lifetime.
