Abstract Sarphati Amsterdam is a collaboration between the city of Amsterdam and four Amsterdam research institutions, focusing on innovative multidisciplinary research beneficial to preventing non-communicable diseases effectively and sustainably. With the Sarphati Cohort, Sarphati Amsterdam has established a dynamic cohort study that systematically monitors growth and its determinants from birth until adulthood, in order to 1) identify causes of overweight and 2) evaluate interventions to combat overweight. Data collection is linked to routine Youth Health Care consultations with all ∼150,000 Amsterdam children (0-18y). Thus, making selected care data on growth and development available for research. After informed parental consent, anonymised data can be used to systematically monitor children. Additional data is collected through age-specific questionnaires. The sub-cohort structure facilitates more extensive data collection in subpopulations, including interviews, observations, and biosamples. Up until March 2020 over 5,130 children enrolled. The continuous inclusion of new-borns gives the Sarphati Cohort its dynamic character. This enables the incorporation of innovative research designs to evaluate interventions. With over 170 different nationalities Amsterdam has a highly diverse population, both in terms of cultural and socio-economic background. The data collection strategies and tailored tools are developed to meet the level of adaptability this design requires. Embedding research in this manner enriches it way beyond clinical settings and provides an unparalleled depth and breadth of data. With the Sarphati Cohort, Sarphati Amsterdam facilitates innovative research in the field of obesity that will contribute to the ambitious policy objectives of the city of Amsterdam to promote healthy behaviour and improve the quality of life of young people.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of quality service on the image and the reputation obtained in restaurants. We also analyze the effect that the business image has on the reputation of restaurants. Finally, we want to discover the mediation effect of the image between the quality service and the reputation of the restaurants. This research is based on a sample of 202 consumers of five restaurants (franchise type) in the city of Guaymas Sonora, Mexico. The data collection was conducted during the months of March to June 2016. The estimates of the relationships (hypothesis) have been tested through the System of Structural Equations based on the variance with the Partial Least Squares technique. The results show that quality in the service has a strong influence on the image of restaurants. In addition, we found that the image of the business significantly influences the reputation of restaurants. However, the service quality does not have significant effects on business reputation. We have also found that the business image is a variable that contributes to a greater significant effect between business reputation and service quality. Research contributes to the development of the literature on consumer behavior and service marketing.

The purpose of this study was to explore low-income lone mothers’ perceptions of their engagement with a text (SMS) and multimedia message (MMS) qualitative study. Study participants were asked to submit text and pictures via SMS and MMS that represented their reflections, observations, and experiences accessing community support services over a 6-week period. After engaging in the study, participants were asked to complete an evaluation questionnaire. The resoundingly positive feedback received in the evaluation—and the researchers’ satisfaction with the data collected—suggests that researchers should consider employing SMS and MMS data collection strategies to gain open-ended insights into the daily experiences of marginalized groups. This method may be particularly well suited to feminist research designs and research with populations underrepresented in the literature due to barriers presented by traditional data collection strategies.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has been described as the fastest growing academic development movement in higher education. As this field of inquiry matures, there is a need to understand how SoTL research is conducted. The purpose of our study was toinform this debate by investigating research approaches used in SoTL publications. We analysed 223 empirical research studies published from 2012 to 2014 in three explicitly focused SoTL journals. We classified the studies as either qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods using an analytical framework devised from existing literature on research methods. We found that the use of the three research designs was fairly evenly distributed across the papers examined: qualitative (37.2%), quantitative (29.6%), and mixed methods (33.2%). However, there was an over-reliance on data collection from a single source in 83.9% of papers analysed, and this source was primarily students. There was some, but limited, evidence of the use of triangulation through the use of multiple data collection instruments (e.g. survey, assessment tasks, grade databases). Similarly, only one-third of publications classified as mixed methods integrated the analysis and interpretation of the qualitative and quantitative data equally within the study. We conclude that current SoTL research is characterised by methodological pluralism but could be advanced through inclusion of more diverse approaches, such as close reading, and adoption of strategies known to enhance the quality of research, for example, triangulation and visual representation.
