Abstract Background Dutch legislation stimulates active participation of employees in their return-to-work (RTW) process. Earlier research showed that employees, particularly with low levels of education, are not always able to self-direct RTW. Empowering leadership may support this process. This study answers two research questions: (1) What differences and similarities do employers of employees with low versus high levels of education show in their management of RTW? (2) To what degree do the roles of employers in both types of organizations resemble empowering leadership? Methods We performed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 10 HR professionals and supervisors working at a Dutch university. We also analysed transcripts from a study in which 13 HR professionals and supervisors from multiple Dutch industries (employing workers with low levels of education) were interviewed. We used purposive sampling to recruit participants. For question 1, the transcripts were analysed thematically. For question 2, pattern matching was applied. Results Preliminary results indicate that supervisors of both types of employees, show several similarities in managing RTW, such as the focus on possibilities instead of impossibilities, asking the advice of the occupational physician, and seeking support to increase employability. We also found that supervisors of employees with low levels of education have a stronger tendency to control and steer RTW and feel that possibilities for RTW are limited, while supervisors of high-educated employees tend to engage in dialogue more often and search for possibilities for work adjustments. Empowering leadership seems to be less common among supervisors of employees with low levels of education. Conclusions This study will benefit employers (of workers with both low and high levels of education) who aim to enable employees' self-direction in RTW, and help supervisors to develop more empowering leadership styles. This may lead to more sustainable RTW. Key messages Supervisors of employees with lower levels of education have a strong tendency to control and steer their employees’ return-to-work. Enabling employees’ self-direction in return-to-work requires empowering leadership.

Tahfiz  learning is a  form of difficult and challenging learning especially in the  context of secondary tahfiz education that is offered together with the main stream curriculum, Standard Based Curriculum for  Secondary  Schools  (KSSM).   This  study  was  conducted  to  explore  forms  of  challenges  and support  needed  by  tahfiz  students  at  selected  government-funded  religious  schools  in  Malaysia.    A qualitative approach is used to answer the research questions that are based on in-depth exploration on challenges  and  support  needed  by  tahfiz  students.    Purposive  sampling  technique  was  used to  select participants who have attended tahfiz learning at least three years.  Individual semi structured in-depth interviews  were  conducted  with participants  consisted  11  students.    Findings also showed  that there are  several  challenges  faced  by  the  students;  home  environment,  difficulty  in  memorization,  gadgets and  peer  challenges.    Further  findings  showed  that  support  needed  by  the  students  are  teachers, parents,  peers  and  school’s  support.   This  study  provides  important  implications  that  support  is  a significant aspect of tahfiz students so that they can handle learning challenges. Abstrak Pembelajaran tahfiz ialah satu bentuk pembelajaran yang agak sukar dan mencabar terutama dalam konteks pendidikan  tahfiz  menengah yang ditawarkan bersama-sama dengan kurikulum arus perdana iaitu Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM).  Kajian ini dijalankan bagi meneroka bentuk cabaran dan sokongan yang diperlukan oleh murid tahfiz yang berada di sekolah agama bantuan kerajaan terpilih di Malaysia.  Pendekatan kualitatif digunakan bagi menjawab persoalan kajian yang ditentukan iaitu berkisar kepada penerokaan secara mendalam terhadap cabaran dan sokongan yang diperlukan oleh murid tahfiz.  Teknik persampelan bertujuan digunakan bagi memilih peserta kajian yang terdiri daripada murid  yang telah mengikuti pembelajaran tahfiz  sekurang-kurangnya tiga tahun.  Temu bual mendalam secara individu dijalankan terhadap peserta kajian yang melibatkan 11 orang murid tahfiz.  Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat beberapa cabaran yang dihadapi murid iaitu cabaran persekitaran rumah, cabaran kesukaran menghafaz, cabaran gajet dan cabaran rakan sebaya.  Seterusnya dapatan menunjukkan terdapat beberapa sokongan yang diperlukan murid iaitu sokongan guru, ibu bapa, rakan dan sekolah.  Kajian ini memberi implikasi penting bahawa sokongan adalah aspek yang signifikan kepada murid tahfiz agar mereka mampu menghadapi cabaran pembelajaran.

As soon as decision makers are expected to make differences towards sustainable future, young adults’ ability to make informed and sound decisions is considered essential towards securing our planet. This study provides an insight into young adults’ knowledge of key environment and sustainability issues. To answer the key research questions, data were obtained using a qualitative phenomenographic research approach and collected through 18 face-to-face in-depth interviews with research participants. The findings of this study suggest that young adults lived experiences that play a huge role in their level of awareness of topical environmental and sustainability issues critical to humanity’s future on earth.

 This study aims to determine the psychological dynamics of former drug addicts, starting from drug abuse until they become addicted, deciding to stop using them. This study uses a qualitative approach, the subject or informant is determined using a non-probability sampling technique with a purposive sampling type based on predetermined criteria, which involves one informant, namely a male (F) aged 42 years. Data collection methods used in this study are in-depth interviews (in depth interviews), where researchers will interview informants with semi-structured interviews. In addition, researchers also used observation and psychological tests, which are graphic tests in the form of DAM (Draw a Man) and BAUM (tree drawing) tests, and intelligence tests using WAIS. The data analysis technique used is case study analysis of case / incident patterns. Based on the results of research F became a drug addict because of the learning process, where the enjoyment and lack of parental supervision is a reinforcement to continue using drugs. Generalization of people, places, pleasure makes it difficult for F to stop using drugs.   Keywords: Psychological Dynamics, Drug Addicts. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dinamika psikologis mantan pecandu napza, dimulai dari awal menyalahgunan napza hingga menjadi kecanduan, memutuskan untuk berhenti memakai. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, Subjek atau informan ditentukan dengan menggunakan tehnik sampling non-probability sampling dengan tipe purposive sampling berdasarkan kriteria yang telah ditentukan, yaitu melibatkan satu informan, yaitu laki-laki (F) yang berusia 42 tahun. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan wawancara secara mendalam (in depth interview), dimana peneliti akan menwawancarai informan dengan wawancara semi terstruktur. Selain itu peneliti juga menggunakan observasi serta menggunakan tes-tes psikologi, yaitu tes grafis berupa tes DAM (Draw a Man) dan BAUM (tes menggambar pohon), serta tes inteligensi dengan menggunakan WAIS. Tehnik analisis data yang digunakan adalah menggunakan analisis studi kasus pola kasus/kejadian. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian F menjadi pecandu narkoba karena adanya proses belajar, dimana kenikmatan dan kurangnya pengawasan orang tua merupakan reinforcement untuk terus menggunakan napza. Adanya generalisasi terhadap people, place, pleasure menyebabkan F sulit untuk berhenti menggunakan napza. Kata Kunci: Dinamika Psikologis, Mantan Pengguna Napza

This article describes the findings of a national survey of State Hazard Mitigation Officers (SHMOs) in U.S. states and territories in order to gain a greater understanding of the roles that they play in assisting local governments to build the capacity required to successfully develop and implement Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-funded Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grants, an important but understudied aspect of hazard mitigation governance. The research questions focus on: (1) How states and territories enable local governments to develop and implement HMA grants and (2) SHMOs’ opinions regarding their perceived capacity and effectiveness in assisting local governments to develop and implement HMA grants. Results show that while states and territories are relatively well-equipped to perform general administrative duties required by FEMA, SHMOs expressed wide variation in their capacity to assist local governments to develop and implement HMA grants. This was particularly evident with regard to the delivery of specific technical assistance measures required to develop HMA grants. Survey responses also highlight modest levels of participation in FEMA-designed efforts to delegate responsibility to states and territories and low levels of participation in programs that offer pre-application funding to local governments to help them develop HMA grant applications. These findings should concern FEMA as the agency embarks on the implementation of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program, an ambitious pre-disaster hazard mitigation grant initiative.

Background: Aging and longevity are important topics nowadays. Purpose: To describe how older adults perform the occupational adaptation process in the extreme region of Magallanes (Chile), and to identify the factors that might contribute to successful occupational adaptation and well-being. Method: Qualitative study, with a phenomenological interpretative approach. In-depth interviews were carried out with 16 older adults, with high or low levels of well-being, assessed with the Ryff Scale. An inductive content analysis according to Elo and Kyngäs was performed. Findings: Resilience, self-esteem and interdependence with significant others are key elements that promote well-being. Participants develop strategies to minimize the effects of environmental factors. The occupation’s function in terms of socialization, use of time, and social participation is revealed as a conditioning factor of occupational adaptation. Implications: Interventions with older people to achieve a successful occupational adaptation process must take into consideration the commitment to meaningful activities.

About two billion rural individuals depend on agricultural systems associated with a high amount of risk and low levels of yield in the drylands of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Human activities, climate change and natural extreme events are the most important drivers of desertification. This phenomenon has occurred in many regions of Iran, particularly in the villages in the periphery of the central desert of Iran, and has made living in the oases so difficult that the number of abandoned villages is increasing every year. Land abandonment and land-use change increase the risk of desertification. This study aims to respond to the research questions: (i) does the planning of green infrastructures on the desert margin affect the distribution and balance of the population? (ii) how should the green belt be designed to have the greatest impact on counteracting desertification?, and (iii) does the design of productive landscape provide the solution? Through a wide-ranging and comprehensive approach, this study develops different scenarios for designing a new form of green belt in order to sustainably manage the issues of environmental protection, agricultural tradition preservation and desertification counteraction. This study proposes a new-traditional greenbelt including small low-cost and low-tech projects adapted to rural scale.

The objective of the study was to investigate the Tourism and Commoditization of Traditional Cultures among the Himba People of Namibia. Globalization theory by Greg Richards and the use value theory by Marx was linked with this study. A mixture of methods comprising of descriptive cross-sectional survey, phenomenology and ethnographic research designs was employed to assess the effect of commoditization of traditional cultures among the Himba people through tourism. The study employed two principal data collection techniques: questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Stratified sampling and purposive sampling procedures were used. Purposive sampling was used as a non-probability sampling method in the sampling of key informants such as tour-guide, local leaders and museum employees. The study took place in two sampled villages in the Opuwo rural constituency, namely, Ohunguomure Village and Okatutura ka Vinjange, which form the major cultural tourist destinations. The sample size of this study was 98. Data was analysed using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Quantitative analysis was applied to close-ended questions, and the data were analysed in terms of frequencies and percentages using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Qualitative data obtained from open-ended questions and interviews were analysed thematically. The study concludes that commoditization of culture is diluting culture and destroys the originality of the culture. The study recommends the need for this Ministry to have a component or department that specifically works towards the issue of commoditization of the Himba culture in the Kunene Region.

The concept of work in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) specifically in Songkhla province of Thailand is highlighted in this paper. The study assumed that the meaning of work in NGOs is different from other types of organizations such as business and governmental organizations. NGO operations are seen to be different in terms of their goals when compared to those organizations. Even though research on work had been widely conducted in the business as well as the governmental sectors worldwide, few studies on this issue had been done in the NGO or non-profit sector. The concept of work in NGOs needs to be explored further in order for interested parties to get a true understanding of the nature of work in NGO sector. The research questions posed in this paper relate to how and why the work in NGOs influences the NGO professionals. The objective of this paper is to present some findings based on an in-depth study on the meaning of work in NGOs. This study consists of two core aspects of work: subjective and objective aspects. The respondents in this paper were 16 professionals (i.e. university graduates) selected from five local NGOs in Songkhla province of Thailand. This study used a mixed method within qualitative approach comprising in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and secondary documents. This study showed that the NGO professionals had given high values on the subjective aspects of work because they were seeking fulfillment from work, while the objective aspects of work were seen to be less important to them.

This study attempts to understand social and educational experiences of students with disabilities in institutions of higher education and is exploratory in nature. To understand the educational experiences of these students, it is not enough to know only the availability of services and resources. It is also necessary to understand the students personally, and the circumstances in which they live. To answer the research questions posed in this study, the researcher has used mixed methods and three universities were selected through purposive sampling in so as to gain maximum diverse variation. For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with hundred students with disabilities in selected universities in Andhra Pradesh, India. In this study, quantitative and qualitative data analyses were used and in most cases quotes of real text for each theme were maintained and used extensively. The findings of the study show the students were very categorical about their special needs in order to achieve their goals. A greater understanding has been gained regarding coping strategies adopted by them to manage their higher education needs. Based on findings of the study the researcher has brought out the factors which influence the creation of an inclusive environment in institutions of higher education.
