Abstract Drinker devices can affect feed and water intake, which then affect performance, as well as device cleanliness, water quality and spillage. One hundred and eighteen Holstein male calves (311 ± 1.4 kg and 228 ± 0.6 d of age) were used in a randomized block design to evaluate the effect of drinker device on concentrate and water intake, performance and water spillage during the winter months. Calves were allocated in 6 pens (3 pens/treatment; 19 to 20 calves/pen) with one computerized concentrate feeder and one straw feeder. Pens were assigned to one of the two treatments: one water through (TRO, 35 cm x 35 cm, no pressure was required) or one bowl with nipple facing up (BO, bowl with a 20 cm diameter and 5-cm nipple, bite-style that was activated then animals pressed the nipple). Concentrate and water intake were recorded daily, body weight (BW), drinker device cleanliness, and water spillage (DM of bedding under the drinker) fortnightly, and water quality monthly. Data were analyzed using a mixed-effects model. Final BW, average daily gain, and concentrate intake were not affected by treatment. Apparent water intake tended (P = 0.10) to be greater in TRO (26.5 ± 0.39 L/day) than in BO (25.5 ± 0.39 L/day) and water spillage was lesser in TRO (70.3 ± 1.67 % DM) than BO (75.6 ± 1.67 % DM) pens. No differences in water quality parameters were observed despite cleanliness of TRO was lesser compared with BO devices (83.3 % vs 2.0% had presence of feed, respectively, P < 0.001). Data of the present study are promising; the bowl nipple device reduces 4% apparent water consumption and water spillage with no impairment in animal performance and improving device cleanliness. A replicate trial will be run during summer months to contrast and complete the present study results.

This study aims to determine the absorption of water detergent waste using water spinach (ipomoea aquatica). This experimental study used a randomized block design. Water samples were planted with water plants according to the research design. Detergent concentrations were observed using the MBAS (Methylene Blue Active Substance) method. The results showed that water spinach was able to reduce the detergent concentration and improve the concentration of water quality parameters (DO, BOD, and COD). After the treatment of water kangkong, the ability to absorb detergent was seen with a decrease in detergent levels until day 28 of 54.17%. The highest detergent absorption on days 7 and 14.

Abstract Antibiotics growth promoting (AGP) in animal feed has been restricted. With this, several additives have been tested in order to replace AGP and ensure intestinal health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a blend of additives on growth performance, diarrhea incidence and cecal content microbiota of nursery pigs. A total of 576 weaned pigs (6.21 ± 1.16 kg) were assigned into 4 treatments (12 replicates) in randomized block design: basal diet without additives (NC); basal diet with 120 ppm of halquinol (PC); NC + 0,05% blend of lactic acid (3,5%), benzoic acid (2,5%), flavonoids (3,5%) (B5); NC+ 0,1% of same blend (B10). The pigs were weighed 0 and 42 days into the experiment. On day 10, one animal per pen (10 replicates) was euthanized for microbiota analyses. The diarrhea incidence was calculated by the percentage of visual pens with diarrhea, by day, in the period. The growth performance was analyzed by GLIMMIX procedure and the means were compared with Tukey test (P < 0.050) (SAS, 2009). Diarrhea incidence was analyzed by GENMOD procedure (SAS, 2009). The Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare microbial biodiversity (P < 0.050) by statistical program STAMP. The final weight (P = 0.010) and average daily gain (P = 0.001) of B10 and PC were higher than NC. Regarding diarrhea, it was observed that the B5 and B10 had lower incidence when compared to other groups in the total period. In the microbiome analyses, it was observed that the B5, B10, and PC groups had lower (P = 0.021) biodiversity when compared to the NC piglets. However, the B5 and B10 group had higher biodiversity when compared to the PC group. In conclusion, the supplementation with 0,1% blend of additives can be a substitute for AGP.

The present work aimed at determining the effects of the association between the periphyton-based system with the bioflocs-based system in the intensive culture of juvenile Nile tilapia (1.56 ± 0.07 g; 72 fish m-3), on variables of water quality, growth performance and effluent quality after 10 weeks. The experiment was arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial randomized block design with four treatments and five repetitions each. The factors tested were the following: ‘underwater structure’ (absence and presence) and ‘adjustment of the C: N ratio of water’ (no and yes). The final fish body weight, specific growth rate and yield were higher (p < 0.05) in the C: N-adjusted tanks. The presence of submerged structures in the tanks had no significant influence on those same variables. It was concluded that the periphyton-based system is not indicated for intensive farming of Nile tilapia, in which there is a high allowance of artificial feed to fish.

Kata kunci: konsumsi, kecernaan, mikroenkapsulasi, minyak kanola, performaABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding diets with microencapsulation of canola oil on intake, nutrient apparent digestibility, and growth performance of lambs. Fifteen male garut lambs with an initial average body weight of 20.17 ± 4.65 kg were used in a randomized block design (RBD) for a 100-days feeding period with 3 treatments and 5 groups as replication. The treatments were P0 (control/forage:concentrate = 60:40), P1 (P0 contained 4% of canola oil), and P2 (P0 contained 4% of microencapsulated canola oil). The results showed that there was no difference in the growth performance, intake, and digestibility of nutrients. The best of average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency results from the supplementation of pure canola oil or encapsulated canola oil in diets. The proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in the supplementation of microencapsulated canola oil treatment was 8% higher than control. The treatment of canola oil supplementation increased (P<0.05) the proportion of stearic acid (C18:0) compared to other treatments. Thus, it can be concluded that supplementation of 4% of microencapsulated canola oil, besides produced the best of ADG and feed efficiency, was also able to maintain unsaturated fatty acids from the rumen biohydrogenation process without detrimental effects on nutrient intake and digestibility in lambs.    Keywords: canola oil, digestibility, intake, microencapsulation, performance

Palavras-chave: Estresse hídrico, Capsicum frutescens, produtividade e qualidade do fruto.MARINHO, L. N.WATER DEFICIT APPLIED IN VEGETATIVE AND FLOWERING STAGE OF ‘TABASCO’ PEPPER IN GREENHOUSE2 ABSTRACTThe scarcity of water resources in Brazil has driven the management of demand for more efficient irrigation in farms in order to reduce water consumption and make its use more efficient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water deficits’ effect at the vegetative and flowering stages of pepper in water use efficiency, yield and quality of pepper cv. 'Tabasco'(Capsicum frutescens) grown in a greenhouse from September 2009 to July 2010. The experiment was conducted as randomized block design with irrigation levels of 40, 60, 80 and 100% of Crop Evapotranspiration (ETc), beginning at vegetative and flowering stages. There was a significant effect of full and deficits irrigation started at vegetative and flowering stages on the fruit number per plant, and the linear model was the best fitted. The average of mass fruit per plant did not vary with the deficit, not even with the start up times. The deficit irrigation affected pepper productivity, yet it was not observed on the physical quality of fruits. The deficit irrigation (40% ETc) beginning at flowering stage allowed savings of up to 49.8% in water consumption in a cycle of 208 days after transplanting. Keywords: water stress, Capsicum frutescens, productivity and fruit quality.

Background: Basmati rice is an important cereal crop occupying a unique position in Indian agriculture. More than 90% of global rice is produced and consumed in Asia and plays a crucial role in the entry of mineral nutrients into the food chain. Identification of stable genotypes is of great significance because the environmental conditions vary from season to season and year to year. Methods: Thirty six Basmati rice genotypes were evaluated in four production environments during kharif 2016 and kharif 2017 at two locations Kaul and Uchani to study the G × E interaction for milling, appearance, cooking and eating quality parameters. The genotypes were grown in randomized block design with three replications. Result: Based on the stability analysis of Eberhart and Russell model, genotypes viz., Haryana Mahak 1, Pusa 1826-12-271-4 and HKR 06-434 were found stable across the environments for milling%, grain length before cooking and length breadth ratio before cooking, respectively.

The low yield of cabbage in Maluku is thought to due to the lack of attention of farmers to grow to crop because so far farmers think it can only grow well and forms crops in the highlands, so no one wants to grow cabbage. This study aimed to determine the yield performance of five cabbage varieties with the use of several types of mulches and was carried out in Gemba Village, Kairatu Subdistrict, Western Seram Regency. The experimental design used was the factorial Randomized Block Design with three replications and the farmers as replications. The first factor was five varieties of cabbage (Sehati-F1, Daehnfeldt, Green Hero, Green Coronet, KK-Koss), the second factor was the type of mulch, consisting of four types, namely: without mulch (M0), black silver plastic mulch, straw mulch, and husk mulch. The data obtained were analyzed with analysis of variance and DMRT test at the level of 5% if necessary. Parameters observed included plant height at 45 days after planting, leaf number, percentage of crop formation, percentage of pest and disease attacks, crop circumference per plant at harvest, fruit weight, and yield.  The study results showed that the five varieties tested with the use of various types of mulch had the potentials to be developed in Maluku. Varieties with the highest yields and very good adaptation to lowland environments in Maluku included Sehati-F1 and KK-Cross. Pest control by using plant-based pesticides in a combination with scheduled mechanical control (yellow plates, pitfalls, and stick traps) could reduce the levels of pest and disease attacks and the crops appeared healthy for consumption. The present investigation was carried out to study the effect of off season soil management practices on yield and quality of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) cultivars. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Block Design with ten treatments in three replications consisted of five off-season land management treatments viz., fallow (S1), summer ploughing 2 times (S2), summer ploughing 1 time (S3), solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick for 40 days (S4) and black polyethylene film for 40 days (S5). It was tested with two popular cultivars viz., Curcuma longa -1 CL-1 (V1) and Curcuma longa-2 CL-2 (V2), collected from Erode and Chidambaram. Various yield components were recorded at the time of harvest and were analysed. The yield attributing characters viz., number, length, girth and weight of mother, primary and secondary rhizomes were recorded. The treatment where solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick was tested recorded the highest yield and yield attributing characters when compared to other treatments. The same treatment also exhibited the highest fresh rhizome yield per plant, curing percentage and cured rhizome yield. The quality parameters like curcumin, oleoresin and essential oil content were also showed superior performance in the treatment where solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick was applied.
