The purpose of organizational research methods is to answer questions about an organizational phenomenon through systematic gathering and analysis of relevant data to provide evidence for the phenomenon. This process is directed at exploring, describing, predicting, or explaining the phenomenon by strengthening or weakening a theory, testing a hypothesis or prediction, or replicating previous findings. To evaluate the adequacy of a research method, it is important not only to understand the logic, strengths, and limitations of the method, but also to relate it to the specific research question and the context of use. Research methods may be reviewed in terms of foundational issues, research approaches, and study designs; data-collection methods, data analyses, and statistical techniques; and various major issues and controversies regarding their use. Research methods may be distinguished in terms of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Both approaches share the common premise that empirical data are necessary for answering the research question under investigation, although they may differ in the assessment of what constitutes appropriate and useful data, the adequacy of the research method in obtaining the data, and the interpretation of the results. Qualitative approaches assume that organizational phenomena can only be understood in terms of the subjective reality as experienced by the individuals involved, which are constructed by the individuals themselves based on their past and present experiences and interpretations of the meanings of the specific situation in question, which could be highly transitory and unique in nature and therefore cannot be generalized or replicated across situations. It is further assumed that the individual’s experiences, interpretations, and meanings can only be revealed and themes can emerge through intensive studies of the specific cases and situations and that it is not possible to represent or reflect this subjective reality in statistical terms. Common qualitative research methods include case studies and ethnography. Quantitative approaches assume that organizational phenomena have objective reality that results from lawful and predictable patterns of human behavior in organizational contexts and therefore could generalize and be replicated across similar situations. It is further assumed that these regular patterns of human behavior can be discovered and assertions about the patterns can be tested for their truth or falsity and that it is possible for the researcher to construct measures to gather data and analyze them statistically to represent or reflect this objective reality. Common quantitative research methods include correlational studies and experiments.

The controversy that has surrounded the value of quantitative research methods as opposed to qualitative approaches as a means to increasing the knowledge and understanding of human behaviour in health and illness, has been contested by nurse scholars for several decades. This paper continues debate around this issue and provides a critique of the problems associated with these competing paradigms. It challenges the convention that all nursing research must be objective and value free in order to be scientific, and provides an overview of the processes that should be considered by researchers utilizing qualitative methods of inquiry.

Objective: To think about the quantitative and qualitative approaches in health research. Because it is an issue that concerns and beyond the field of health research. Method: This is reflective critical analysis. Results: From the reflection on the inconsistent opposition that is made of research methods, highlights the importance of each method for the instrumentation of the various objects of study, pointing to their use in a complementary way, which provides the visualization of objects of study under the various prisms. Conclusion: The theoretical and methodological approaches are sometimes presented in different and opposite way, resulting in the idea of incompatibility between the methods. However, from a methodological point of view, qualitative and quantitative investigations have not contradictory or continuous, but of different nature so that the researcher should not choose between one method or another, but implement the approaches that suit to your research question. Descriptors: Qualitative research. Quantitative analysis. Investigative techniques.

Abstract Financial distress starts from the company's inability to fulfill its obligations. Companies that have consecutively decreased, the company was in financial distress before the bankruptcy occurred. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of profitability ratios, activity ratios and leverage ratios on financial distress in property and real estate sub-sector service companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI).The research method used is a quantitative method with descriptive and verification approaches, quantitative research methods are research methods used to examine a particular population or sample. Descriptive research method is used to determine the value of the independent variable, while verification is used to determine the effect of two or more variables. The results showed the average value of each variable as follows: Financial Distress 4.52, Profitability Ratio 0.07, and Activity Ratio 17.13, Leverage Ratio 52.76. The results of the t test of the Profitability Ratio have an effect on Financial Distress, and the Activity Ratio has no effect on Financial Distress, the Leverage Ratio has an effect on Financial Distress. Based on the results of the f test, it shows that the profitability ratio, activity ratio and leverage ratio simultaneously (together) have a significant effect on financial distress. Keywords: Profitability Ratio, Activity Ratio, Leverage Ratio, Financial Distress.

This chapter examines the ‘art of comparing’ by showing how to relate a theoretically guided research question to a properly founded research answer by developing an adequate research design. It first considers the role of variables in comparative research before discussing the meaning of ‘cases’ and case selection. It then looks at the ‘core’ of the comparative research method: the use of the logic of comparative inquiry to analyse the relationships between variables (representing theory) and the information contained in the cases (the data). Two logics are distinguished: Method of Difference and Method of Agreement. The chapter concludes with an assessment of some problems common to the use of comparative methods.

This study illuminates the research question what characterizes the research of Special Needs Education’s (SNE’s) use of Individualized Education Plans (IEP), during the period 2010-2015? A sample of 11 relevant Norwegian publications has been analyzed by means of these criteria: Type of publication, research method(s) applied, sub-topics focused on and perspectives of SNE. Findings show (1) the amount of the research is still scarce, (2) only three researchers of PhD-level or above have participated in this sample of publications, (3) the sample demonstrates various research methods applied, although document analysis dominates, (4) there is still a need of research looking for catalysts of good planning and using of IEP, (5) the study presents one way of constructing thematic and sub-topical categories, and (6) one needs to validate how the SNE’s perspectives of traditionalism and inclusionism influence the outcomes of IEP research.
