Passion’s Fictions traces the intimate links between literature and the sciences of soul and mind from the age of Shakespeare to the rise of the novel. It chronicles the emergence of new sciences of the passions between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries out of and in some ways against a received “science of the soul,” and it argues that this history was shaped by rhetoric, which contained the most extensively particularized discourse on the passions, offering principles for moving and affecting the passions of others in concrete social scenes. This rhetoric of the passions centered on narrative as the instrument of a non-theoretical knowledge of the passions in their particularity, predicated on an account of passion as an intimate relation between an empassioned mind and an empassioning world: rhetoric offers a kind of externalist psychology, formalized in the relation of passion to action and underwriting an account of narrative as a means of both moving passion and knowing it. This book describes the psychology of the passions before the discipline of psychology, tracing the influence of rhetoric on theories of the passions from Francis Bacon to Adam Smith and using that history to read literary works by Shakespeare, Milton, Haywood, Richardson, and others. Narrative offers a means of knowing and moving the passions by tracing them to the events and objects that generate them; the history of narrative practices is thus a key part of the history of the psychology of the passions at a critical moment in its development.

This study wants to reveal the truth procedures in Ahmad Tohari's novel Orang-Orang Proyek, as a part of an event and a factor in the presence of a new subject. This research would answer the problem: how was the subjectification of Ahmad Tohari in Orang-Orang Proyek novel as truth procedures? This study used the set theory by Alain Badiou. The set theory explained that within a set there were members of "Existing" or Being and events as "Plural" members.  The results proved that the subjectivity between Tohari and New Order events produced literary works: Orang-Orang Proyek. This happened because there was a positive relationship between the author and the event as well as on the naming of the event. Not only as of the subject but also do a fidelity to what he believed to be a truth. The truth procedures or the void—originating from the New Order event—was in the history of the making of a bridge in a village in Java island, Indonesia during the New Order period that filled with corruption, collusion, and nepotism. Tohari then embodied it in his novel. By the presences of the novel, we could know the category of Tohari's presentation as a new subject such as faithful, reactive, and obscure.

The article undertakes the analysis of Ann Radcliffe’s novel The Italian, or the Confessional of the Black Penitents (1797) from a history of literary emotions perspective which, I argue, yields insights into the attitudes towards emotions embedded in Radcliffe’s works. A reading of the novel from such a perspective also complements the critical studies of the artist’s engaging with the eighteenth-century cult of sensibility. The novel is read as a text that registered but also participated in the dissemination of an epistemology of emotional experience articulated in the idiom of eighteenth-century moral philosophers – Francis Hutcheson, David Hume and Adam Smith - at the same time as it retained some of the older, theology-based conceptions of passions and affections. The dynamic in which the two frameworks for understanding the emotions exist in the novel is explored through a close reading of the vocabulary in which Radcliffe rendered the emotional experiences of her fictional characters. In this reading it is the passions which are found to have been invested with a variety of meanings and attributed a range of moral valences that most noticeably foreground the movement from a generally negative towards a more complex appreciation of powerful emotions.

This article discusses the social facts experienced by Americans in literature, especially novel. Literary work as a social documentation imagined by the author is a reflection of the values of a nation or ethnicity. The main objective of research is to trace the reality of slavery that occurred in America as a social fact in literary works. This research is useful in strengthening the sociological aspects of literary works as well as proving that literary works save a social reality at the time so that readers are able to judge literary works not merely as fiction, but also as social documentation. The writer in this study uses one of the literary research methods, namely Genetic Structuralism Approach. This method emphasizes three main aspects, namely literary work, the background of the author's life, and social reality. Novel Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl written by Harriet Ann Jacobs in 1858 was used as primary research data, then a number of references about the author's social background and the reality of slavery in the history of the American nation became secondary data. Primary and secondary research data obtained through literature study. Based on the results of this study found the events of slavery in the history of the American nation. Slavery was the act of white Americans forcibly employing black Negroes on the lands of plantation and agricultural also mining areas. Slavery is a valuable lesson for Americans in protecting human rights today as well as a historic lesson in building the American national spirit, namely freedom, independence, and democracy. The reality of slavery is reflected in the novel Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl as well as the life experience of its author, Harriet Ann Jacobs.

German Kazan”: Imagological Analysis of Guzel Yakhina’s Literary Works| The capital of the Republic of Tatarstan is a multicultural city. It is a combination of “Russian,” “Tatar” and, not least, “German elements”. The writer Guzel Yakhina has repeatedly addressed this cultural diversity in her literary works. In them a native of Kazan explores the past and present of the city. Excellent knowledge of German language and culture allows her to study in detail the “German trace” in the history of the capital of Tatarstan to determine its status. The article offers a brief imagological analysis of the images of “German Kazan” presented in the novel Zuleikha and the essay Garden on the Border, or the Garden “Russian Switzerland”. The imagological study conducted at the macro-, meso- and micro-levels shows that in Yakhina’s literary works the images of “German Kazan” are equivalent to the images of “Russian Kazan” or “Tatar Kazan.” The “German elements” are firmly rooted inthe texture of the city and have been an integral part of its cultural code for several centuries. At the same time, following the novel and the essay, they do not have the status of an exotic “foreign,” but a familiar “other.” „Niemiecki Kazań”: imagologiczna analiza utworów Guzel Jachiny Stolica Republiki Tatarstanu to miasto wielokulturowe. To połączenie „rosyjskiego”, „tatarskiego” i, co nie mniej ważne, „niemieckiego” pierwiastka. Pisarka Guzel Jachina wielokrotnie odnosiła się do tej różnorodności kulturowej w swoich tekstach literackich. Rdzenny mieszkaniec Kazania odkrywa w nich przeszłość i teraźniejszość miasta. Doskonała znajomość języka i kultury niemieckiej pozwala autorce na szczegółowe zbadanie „niemieckiego śladu” w historii stolicy Tatarstanu w celu określenia jego statusu. Artykuł zawiera krótką analizę imagologiczną obrazów „niemieckiego Kazania”, przedstawionych w powieści Zulejkaotwiera oczy i eseju Ogród na granicy, czyli Ogród „Rosyjska Szwajcaria”. Badania imago-logiczne, przeprowadzone na poziomach makro-, mezo- i mikro-, pokazują, że w dziełach literackich Jachiny obrazy „niemieckiego Kazania” są równoważne obrazom „rosyjskiego Kazania” czy „tatarskiego Kazania”. „Elementy niemieckie” są mocno zakorzenione w strukturze miasta i od kilku stuleci stanowią integralną część jego kodu kulturowego. Jednocześnie, w powieści i eseju, nie mają one statusu egzotycznego Obcego, ale znajomego Innego.

This article reviews the type of hero typical to the literature of the turn of the XIX – XX centuries and refers to a little-studied storyline from the history of Russian-European ties of this period. In the center of author’s attention are two literary works: the novel by the Polish classic G. Sienkiewicz “Without Dogma” (1890) and the novella “Confessions of Mytishchev” (1901) by almost forgotten Russian writer M. V. Krestovskaya, who was greatly impressed by the book of her contemporary. Both works contain a number of parallels on compositional level, means of narration and the plot itself, but the root of their correlation is attention to a new type of European person, born at the end of the century, and suffering from its “illnesses”. Comparative analysis is conducted on protagonists of the literary works of Sienkiewicz and Krestovskaya – Leon Ploshovsky and Andrey Mytishchev – as representatives of the type of hero-skeptic, hero without dogma, whose appearance in the literature became an organic stage in evolution of the hero-individualist. The time has raised its question, namely on the need to be guided by moral values and follow some dogmas. These works of the Russian and Polish literature of the turn of the XIX – XX centuries are put a single historical and literary context for the first time, and their main characters are viewed as expressers of the European person of that period. Reference of the modern audience to these literary images allows better understanding cultural, historical, philosophical and social prerequisites for the emergence of those who had similar worldview in the late XIX – early XX century. This defines the novelty and relevance of this research.

Literary research, essentially is a process of meeting between literary works and researchers. In this case, it is necessary to pay attention to the reader's situation and reading situation when dealing with literary works. The reader already has a certain amount of knowledge that is realized or will not equip the reading. The knowledge will fill the horizon of understanding when reading the text (novel) with its contextuality. That horizon then directs the reading. Therefore, reading is not a process that runs in one direction, but rather a form of dynamic interaction between the text and the reader. Likewise in the novel The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, readers / researchers will not be able to be separated from the context behind the work. The history of the holocaust sets the stage for telling love stories between Hanna and Michael. The history and love story are interrelated. Literary writers provide a strong setting in the narrative of telling the novel. In the end, the novel became a documentary of the imagination and creativity of the writer in relation to social relations.

Historical events are one source of inspiration for writers to write literary works. Thus, historical events are not only found in historical texts, but also in literary works. One of them is the novel entitled Napoleon dari Tanah Rencong which is a historical novel because it revives the history of the Aceh War in the context of social revolution in Aceh. This study aims to show the representation of jihad in Napoeon dari Tanah Rencong by Akmal Nasery Basral. The concept of representation and hegemony will be used to address problems in this study. The method used in this research is qualitative with descriptive design. The results of the research show that Napoleon dari Tanah Rencong is able to reveal something different about the representation of jihad from what has been known by most of the people of Aceh. Jihad's representation in the novel is related to hegemony, politics and interests.

II. World War has an important place in the history of Germany, as it affected the society deeply in sociological, economic and psychological aspects and the damage left is not easily lost. Therefore, World War II and post-war period has been the subject of many literary works. Depicting of the social panorama reflected in the novel "The Pure Changer" by Siegfried Lenz, one of the German literary writers constitutes the aim of the study. Considering the fact that other social sciences can be used while interpreting literary works, the novel has been handled within the framework of Hannah Arendt's philosophical views, taking into consideration the interdisciplinary perspective. In addition, while analyzing the novel, the text-based approach style was taken into account. In this study, the style of writing of Siegfried Lenz was mentioned and the novel was analyzed considering the philosophical views of Hannah Arendt. In this study, the search for the truth with conscientious, critical and moral principles by elusion of the reality of evil becoming ordinary, of individuals who have ideas and can assume responsibility among German soldiers during the war period and the post-war period are discussed in the novel. <p>The novel <em>Putri Cina</em> or <em>The Chinese Princess</em> by Sindhunata builds on the intertextuality of various texts such as myths, chronicles, history, and pop culture. In the light of René Girard’s theory of desire, revenge, and scapegoating, this study aims (1) to show the inter-relationship among the texts in question; and (2) placing this novel in the work of World Literature. Through qualitative research methods and close reading techniques, this study finds out that <em>Putri Cina</em> recounts the history of conflicts to promote peace rather than revenge. The novel narrates such conflicts as the war between the descendants of the Javanese kings; the feud between the Chinese and Javanese people in colonial time; and the May 1998 ethnic riots in Indonesia. It concludes that it is necessary to circulate the narrative of the Chinese Princess as a peace ambassador in World Literature through the process of adaptation and translation. In a world prone to conflict, literary works can be effective agents of transformation.</p>

The Brian Friel Papers at the NLI reveal a long and relatively unexplored history of major and minor influences on Friel's plays. As the archive attests, these influences manifest themselves in ways that range from the superficial to the deeply structural. In this article, I draw on original archival research into the composition process of Friel's genre-defining play Faith Healer (1979) to bring to light a model of influence that operates at the level of artistic practice. Specifically, I examine the extent to which Friel's officially unacknowledged encounter with a book of interviews with painter Francis Bacon influenced the play in terms of character, language, and form. I suggest that Bacon's creative process – incorporating his ideas on the role of the artist, the workings of chance, and the extent to which art does violence to fact – may have had a major influence on both the play's development and on Friel's development as an artist.
