It is often assumed that East Asians, compared with Westerners, try to reshape their personal attitudes and expectations to fit the environment rather than attempting to influence realities. A recent review of the literature revises this idea by suggesting that East Asians, just like Westerners, do attempt to influence existing realities, but via subtly different routes: East Asians employ indirect strategies, seek support from influential others, or take a long-term approach to changing the world via self-improvement. This chapter discusses East Asians’ tendency to employ various tactics in association with dialecticism, and their default cognitive mode of understanding the self, others, and the environment as changeable, connected, and contradictory. Along with collectivist and interdependent cultural characteristics, dialecticism may have additive or interactive effects on control experiences and psychological functioning in East Asia.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients treated with bisphosphonates is a relatively rare but well known complication at maxillofacial units around the world. It has been speculated that the medication, especially long-term i.v. bisphosphonate treatment, could cause sterile necrosis of the jaws. The aim of this narrative review of the literature was to elaborate on the pathological mechanisms behind the condition and also to gather an update on incidence, risk factors, and treatment of bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw. In total, ninety-one articles were reviewed. All were published in internationally recognized journals with referee systems. We can conclude that necrotic lesions in the jaw seem to be following upon exposure of bone, for example, after tooth extractions, while other interventions like implant placement do not increase the risk of osteonecrosis. Since exposure to the bacterial environment in the oral cavity seems essential for the development of necrotic lesions, we believe that the condition is in fact chronic osteomyelitis and should be treated accordingly.

The article analyzes the difficult terminological situation with the name of the language of the Mountain Jews. In the article, the author gives different versions of the names of the language, existing in parallel, but in different areas. On the one hand, this is the ethnic name of the language - Juhuri, which is associated with the ethnonym Juhurho and is used by its speakers, the Mountain Jews, in their intra-ethnic communication. On the other hand, there is a second name of the same language – the Tat lan- guage and its modifications like Jewish-Tatian language (Judeo-Tat) etc. This name is currently used in scientific literature, in the state administrative “Nomenclature of the Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation”, in the name of such phenomena of the verbal culture of the Mountain-Jewish people as literature and theater. The author states that the presence of two or more disparate and in no way related names of one language brings confusion into the self-identification of Mountain Jews, complicates the study of its ethnogenesis, interferes with the normal statistical records of native speakers and creates many other difficulties. And because of it the author calls for unifying the name of the language of the Mountain Jews at the legislative level. Such unification will help in rejecting the use wrong term “The Tat language”, which is currently used as official one, and which is treated as erroneous and unacceptable by the Mountain Jews themself. Instead of that name, the author proposes to introduce into the administrative nomenclature the ethnic name of the language of the Mountain Jews Juhuri, thereby giving it an official status. As a result of such a replacement, the language of Mountain Jews will get their own relevant official name, which until now their language did not have for a number of specific historical reasons mentioned in the article. And this, the author believes, will fundamentally change the difficult long-term terminological situation with the name of the native language of the Mountain Jews for the better and bring it into a natural and harmonious state, similar to how it is noted in the vast majority of the peoples of Russia and the world: one people of Juhurho - one correlation it is the name of the native language of Juhuri.

This final session integrates the three phases of positive psychotherapy (PPT): the narrative of resilience (positive introduction), the hope of cultivating a better version of the self, and the aspiration of leaving a positive legacy. Meaning refers to a coherent understanding of the world that promotes the pursuit of long-term goals that provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Session Fifteen focuses on the search and pursuit of meaningful endeavors for the greater good, and the central PPT practice in this session is Positive Legacy. The chapter provides a list of readings, videos, and websites that relate to the Positive Legacy idea and offers two worksheets to practice the concepts learned in the chapter. The chapter also includes a real-life case study that illustrates Positive Legacy.

This article examines the issue of whether low-carbon growth might be in the self-interest of Brazil, India, and China. These countries are the largest member countries of the G20 emerging markets (GEMs), and are also members of the BRIC and BASIC grouping of countries. Individually, they are very important to each other in different ways, not least in that emissions in one country have impacts on citizens in another. Combined, their growth and development trajectories over the next decade have important implications for both the long-term prosperity of their own people and those of others around the world.

As a result of increasing globalization, people are exposed to an even greater extent to other cultures, making it possible for individuals to assimilate mindsets that are typical of another culture. Recent work on extracultural cognition has shown that immediate cultural contexts exert powerful influences on cognition and behavioral patterns. This chapter reviews empirical support for extracultural cognition. Specifically, the chapter focuses on dialectical thinking and the well-established finding in the cultural literature that Westerners tend to anticipate linear continuity in the environment and East Asians anticipate change in existing patterns. Research shows, though, that cultural cues may shift these tendencies and—at least temporarily—alter cognitive mindsets to reflect the cognitions of another culture. After a review of the literature, the chapter addresses the implications of extracultural cognition for understanding the influence of dialectical thinking on judgment and decision-making.

In light of recent federal attempts at promoting agency coalitions for developing and coordinating health education-risk reduction programs, the earlier experience of one state in promoting such a coalition is reviewed. A review of the literature on human service organization structure (domain theory), interorganizational collaboration and professional conceptual styles, revealed four necessary but not sufficient guidelines for promoting agency coalitions. First, some source of adequate outside funding must be obtained. Second, the coalition should have an organizational structure which has committees in each of the three domains of organization. Third, the self-interests of the various competing agencies must be recognized and capitalized upon. Fourth, to the extent competing agencies are involved, the collaborative projects should be either short-term and structured (if high interdependence is required) or long-term noninteracting projects.
