Ceratocystis fimbriata, the inciting agent of wilt, canker, and dieback in eucalyptus plantations, was first reported in Brazil in 1998. There is no information regarding the resistance of Eucalyptus spp. to this pathogen. We determined the reaction of 18 Brazilian, commercial clones of the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla to inoculation by two isolates of the pathogen in two experiments. Container-grown, 8-month-old rooted cuttings of each clone were wound-inoculated with a conidial suspension (2.5 × 106/ml). Plants similarly injected with sterile distilled water served as controls. The plants were evaluated after 30 days for length of xylem discoloration. There was a significant isolate by clone interaction, but most clones reacted similarly to the two isolates. Six clones, including one observed to be highly susceptible under field conditions, were highly susceptible (>20 cm discoloration) to one or both isolates of the pathogen. Four clones showed no more discoloration with either isolate than with the control inoculations, and the other eight clones were intermediate in susceptibility. Thus, highly resistant clones are available to manage this disease.

Ceratocystis wilt on eucalyptus, caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata, was first recognized in 1997 in the state of Bahia, Brazil, but is now known in five other states and in four other countries. C. fimbriata is a native, soilborne pathogen in some parts of Brazil but we hypothesized that genotypes of the pathogen have been moved among plantations in rooted cuttings collected from diseased trees and within plantations on cutting tools. We used six microsatellite markers to identify 78 genotypes of C. fimbriata among 177 isolates from individual trees in 20 eucalyptus plantations. The highest gene and genotypic diversity values were found in plantations on formerly wild Cerrado forest in Minas Gerais, suggesting that the fungus was in the soil prior to planting eucalyptus. In contrast, one or only a few genotypes were found in plantations on previous pastureland (with no woody hosts) in Bahia and São Paulo, and most of these genotypes were found in a Bahian nursery or in one of two Bahian plantations that were sources for rooted cuttings. Sources of cuttings tended to be dominated by one or a few genotypes that may have been spread within the plantation on cutting tools.

AbstractSpodoptera frugiperda is a pest of economic importance for several crops with resistance reports to Bt crops and pesticides. Eco-friendly Bt biopesticides may be an alternative to chemical insecticides due to their selectivity and specificity. However, the efficacy of Bt biopesticides may be influenced by the association with other chemicals, such as adjuvants. This study evaluated the compatibility and toxicity of Bt biopesticides mixed with adjuvants for the control of S. frugiperda. The treatments included the association of Dipel SC and Dipel PM with adjuvants. Compatibility tests were used to evaluate the Bt mixture. Bt suspensions obtained from mixtures of Bt and adjuvants at 106 and 3 × 108 spores/mL−1 were used to evaluate S. frugiperda mortality and distilled water was used as the control. The addition of the adjuvant LI increased growth and sporulation, indicating compatibility with Bt biopesticides. The other adjuvants were toxic to reducing Bt growth and sporulation. Only the mixture of Bt with LI and Bt alone was effective to S. frugiperda. The addition of adjuvants to Bt biopesticide affect the Bt sporulation, growth and mortality.

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether there is an influence of different clonal hybrids of Eucalyptus urophylla on the carbon concentration and amount in below-ground biomass in trees cultivated in Oxisol, Brazil. Stumps and roots of three different eucalypt hybrid clones, AEC 0144, AEC 0223, and VM01, were selected, weighed immediately after being removed from the ground, and sampled for carbon determination and moisture content at the laboratory. The Shapiro-Wilk and Bartlett tests were used to evaluate data distribution and the homogeneity of variances, respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) complemented by the Scott-Knott test was used to evaluate the effects of specie/hybrid on the below-ground biomass (dry matter) and carbon amount per stump. The hybrid type of Eucalyptus urophylla does not influence the carbon concentration; however, there is a difference in below-ground biomass production and carbon amount with it being higher for Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus camaldulensis when compared to the species Eucalyptus urophylla and hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis.

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important vegetable crop worldwide. Some Fusarium species can cause pepper fruit rot, leading to significant yield losses of pepper production and, for some Fusarium species, potential risk of mycotoxin contamination. A total of 106 diseased pepper fruit samples were collected from various pepper cultivars from seven provinces (Gansu, Hainan, Heilongjiang, Hunan, Shandong, Shanghai, and Zhejiang) in China during the 2012 growing season, where pepper production occurs on approximately 25,000 ha. Pepper fruit rot symptom incidence ranged from 5 to 20% in individual fields. Symptomatic fruit tissue was surface-sterilized in 0.1% HgCl2 for 1 min, dipped in 70% ethanol for 30 s, then rinsed in sterilized distilled water three times, dried, and plated in 90 mm diameter petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar (PDA). After incubation for 5 days at 28°C in the dark, putative Fusarium colonies were purified by single-sporing. Forty-three Fusarium strains were isolated and identified to species as described previously (1,2). Morphological characteristics of one strain were identical to those of F. concentricum. Aerial mycelium was reddish-white with an average growth rate of 4.2 to 4.3 mm/day at 25°C in the dark on PDA. Pigments in the agar were formed in alternating red and orange concentric rings. Microconidia were 0- to 1-septate, mostly 0-septate, and oval, obovoid to allantoid. Macroconidia were relatively slender with no significant curvature, 3- to 5-septate, with a beaked apical cell and a foot-shaped basal cell. To confirm the species identity, the partial TEF gene sequence (646 bp) was amplified and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. KC816735). A BLASTn search with TEF gene sequences in NCBI and the Fusarium ID databases revealed 99.7 and 100% sequence identity, respectively, to known TEF sequences of F. concentricum. Thus, both morphological and molecular criteria supported identification of the strain as F. concentricum. This strain was deposited as Accession MUCL 54697 (http://bccm.belspo.be/about/mucl.php). Pathogenicity of the strain was confirmed by inoculating 10 wounded, mature pepper fruits that had been harvested 70 days after planting the cultivar Zhongjiao-5 with a conidial suspension (1 × 106 spores/ml), as described previously (3). A control treatment consisted of inoculating 10 pepper fruits of the same cultivar with sterilized distilled water. The fruit were incubated at 25°C in a moist chamber, and the experiment was repeated independently in triplicate. Initially, green to dark brown lesions were observed on the outer surface of inoculated fruit. Typical soft-rot symptoms and lesions were observed on the inner wall when the fruit were cut open 10 days post-inoculation. Some infected seeds in the fruits were grayish-black and covered by mycelium, similar to the original fruit symptoms observed at the sampling sites. The control fruit remained healthy after 10 days of incubation. The same fungus was isolated from the inoculated infected fruit using the method described above, but no fungal growth was observed from the control fruit. 1. The strain of Bacterium coli used in these experiments multiplies in distilled water at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0 and in Ringer-Locke solution at pH 6.0. Under all the other conditions studied the numbers decrease with the passage of time. 2. The electrophoretic charge of the cells is highest in distilled water at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0. Under all other conditions studied the velocity of migration is decreased, but the decrease is immediate and is not affected by more prolonged exposure. 3. A strongly acid solution (pH 2.0) causes a rapid death of the cells and a sharp decrease in electrophoretic charge, sometimes leading to complete reversal. 4. A strongly alkaline solution (pH 11.0) is almost as toxic as a strongly acid one, although in distilled water the organisms survive fairly well at this reaction. Electrophoretic charge, on the other hand, is only slightly reduced in such an alkaline medium. 5. In distilled water, reactions near the neutral point are about equally favorable to both viability and electrophoretic charge, pH 8.0 showing slightly greater multiplication and a slightly higher charge than pH 11.0. In the presence of salts, however, pH 8.0 is much less favorable to viability and somewhat more favorable to electrophoretic charge than is pH 6.0. 6. Sodium chloride solutions, in the concentrations studied, all proved somewhat toxic and all tended to depress electrophoretic charge. Very marked toxicity was, however, exhibited only in a concentration of .725 M strength or over and at pH 8.0, while electrophoretic migration velocity was only slightly decreased at a concentration of .0145 M strength. 7. Calcium chloride was more toxic than NaCl, showing very marked effects in .145 M strength at pH 8.0 and in 1.45 M strength at pH 6.0. It greatly depressed electrophoretic charge even in .0145 M concentration. 8. Ringer-Locke solution proved markedly stimulating to the growth of the bacteria at pH 6.0 while at pH 8.0 it was somewhat toxic, though less so than the solutions of pure salts. It depressed migration velocity at all pH values, being more effective than NaCl in this respect, but less effective than CaCl2. 9. It would appear from these experiments that a balanced salt solution (Ringer-Locke's) may be distinctly favorable to bacterial viability in water at an optimum reaction while distinctly unfavorable in a slightly more alkaline solution. 10. Finally, while there is a certain parallelism between the influence of electrolytes upon viability and upon electrophoretic charge, the parallelism is not a close one and the two effects seem on the whole to follow entirely different laws.

Abstract Calcium (Ca) is a critical plant nutrient typically applied at the time of planting in intensive Eucalyptus plantations in South America. At two sites in Colombia, we examined (1) calcium source by comparing growth after application of 100 kg ha−1 elemental Ca as lime or as pelletized highly reactive calcium fertilizer (HRCF) compared to a no application control, and (2) Ca rate by applying 0, 100, 200, and 400 kg ha−1 elemental Ca as HRCF with the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and boron (NPKSB). We assessed height, diameter, and volume after 12 and 24 months. There were no growth differences from Ca source at the 100 kg ha−1 rate. We found increased volume after 24 months at the “Popayan” site with 200 and 400 kg ha−1 Ca HRCF+NPKSB treatments (112 and 113 m3 ha−1, respectively) compared to control (92 m3 ha−1), a 22% increase. In contrast, volume did not differ after 24 months at the “Darien” site, ranging from 114 m3 ha−1 in the 0 kg ha−1 Ca HRCF+NPKSB treatment to 98 m3 ha−1 in the control. Differences in response are likely due to soil characteristics, such as organic matter, emphasizing the importance of identifying site-specific nutrient deficiencies. Study Implications: Operational applications may be over- or under-applying calcium carbonate in Eucalyptus plantations in South America. In the first two years of a seven-year rotation located in volcanic soils in Colombia, we found that one site with more organic matter at a greater depth did not need Ca additions, whereas the other site required greater than current operational applications to optimize productivity. Ca application rate trials across a gradient of soil conditions could establish critical values and improve recommendations of appropriate Ca application rates and emphasize the importance of understanding site-specific soil conditions to produce effective fertilization regimes.

Objective: to measure pH values of bleaching agents that are indicated to intracoronal bleaching technique in different time intervals. Methods: Each group (G) received five samples (n=5): G1 – distilled water (AD); G2 – hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 30%; G3 – sodium perborate (PbS) + AD; G4 – PbS + H2O2 30%; G5 – sodium percarbonate (PcS) + AD; and G6 – PcS + H2O2 30%. pH values were stated using a digital pHmeter, in different time intervals: immediately after handling (T0), 24 hours (T1) and 168 hours after handling (T2). The results were submitted to statistical analysis through Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney tests, in this order, allowing multiple comparisons among the groups. To verify the effect of time in each group, Friedman test was applied. Results: In the evaluation of the effect of time in each group, it was observed that G2 presented acid behavior, while the other groups exhibited values close to neutrality or alkaline. Conclusions: H2O2 30% was the only agent that showed acidic behavior in every evaluation time. Meanwhile, PcS + H2O had the highest pH values.

ABSTRACT Brazil is the second largest soybean producer in the world, with a yield of around 96.2 million tons per crop. This high yield leads to a great amount of waste resulting from soybean cultivation, which can reach approximately 41 million tons of waste per year. This material has lignocellulosic properties, which may enable its use as a raw material for particleboard production. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of soybean pods in particleboard production. For particleboard manufacture, wood of the hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla and Eucalyptus grandis was used, added with soybean pods, at proportions of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. For particleboard evaluation, a completely randomized design was used, with five treatments and three replicates, using linear regression and the Scott-Knott test at 5% significance for comparison among the different treatments. The properties apparent density, compaction ratio, water absorption after 2 and 24 hours, thickness swelling after 2 and 24 hours in water immersion, internal bonding, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending properties were evaluated. The ratio soybean pod waste and eucalyptus particles in the panels led to an increase in water absorption values and thickness swelling, in addition to a decrease in mechanical properties. The production of panels with approximately 23% soybean pods is feasible.

An experiment was conducted under laboratory and field conditions in order to evaluate the effects of different priming treatments, specifically KNO3 (1%), KCl (2%), KH2PO4 (1%), ZnSO4 (0.05%), PEG-6000 (20%), IBA (100 ppm), Mannitol (4%), GA3 (100 ppm) and distilled water, on seed germination properties and several agro-morphological plant characteristics of red lentil. Seeds not primed were used as a control. GA3 treatment increased shoot length. The control (non-primed seeds) treatment resulted in increased seedling root number and length. Distilled water, ZnSO4 and control treatments increased germination rate and percentage. In the pot experiments, GA3 treatment increased plant height and seedling emergence rate, whereas KCl treatment improved the number of nodules, as well as root and shoot dry weight when compared to the control. ZnSO4 treatment increased yield components and grain yield in field conditions. The results of this study showed that ZnSO4, GA3 and PEG-6000 seed priming treatments may be useful tools due to their positive effects on germination rate, germination percentage, yield component and grain yield of lentil.

O objetivo foi quantificar a biomassa e o estoque de nutrientes do híbrido Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden x E. urophylla S. T. Blake (clone H13) aos 60 meses em sistema agrossilvipastoril. O estudo da biomassa residual (folhas e galhos finos), galhos grossos, madeira e casca e do estoque de nutrientes de eucalipto foi realizado na unidade de referência tecnológica de integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta em Nova Canaã do Norte, MT, cultivado em arranjo simples (2x20 m), duplo (3x2x20 m), triplo (3x2x20 m) e em monocultivo (4x3 m). Apenas a biomassa de galhos grossos, madeira e casca apresentaram diferenças significativas entre arranjos. Os nutrientes se acumularam em maior quantidade na madeira, e em ordem decrescente na casca, biomassa residual e nos galhos grossos. A biomassa residual, galhos grossos e casca correspondem a fração expressiva de nutrientes que permanece no sistema, e que contribuem para menor reposição na manutenção desses, após a colheita. O arranjo triplo apresentou maior acúmulo nutricional comparado ao arranjo simples e duplo. A eficiência nutricional é maior no arranjo de linha tripla devido a maior competição intraespecífica. O teor de nutrientes nas diferentes posições ao longo do fuste não apresentou variações nutricionais significativas para a madeira, diferentemente para a casca.Palavras-chave: sistema iLPF, nutrição florestal, compartimentos. BIOMASS AND NUTRIENTS OF EUCALYPTUS CULTIVATED IN AGROSSILVIPASTORAL SYSTEM ABSTRACT:The objective was to quantify the biomass and nutrient stock of the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden x E. urophylla S. T. Blake, (clone H13) at 60 months in the agrosilvipastoril system. The study of the residual biomass (leaves and thin branches), thick branches, wood and bark and of the nutrient stock of eucalyptus was carried out in the technological unit of crop-livestock-forest integration in Nova Canaã do Norte, MT, cultivated in a simple arrangement (2x20 m), double (3x2x20 m), triple (3x2x20 m) and monoculture (4x3 m). Only the biomass of thick branches, wood and bark presented significant differences between arrangements. The nutrients accumulate in greater quantity in the wood, and in descending order in the bark, residual biomass and in the thick branches. Residual biomass, thick branches and bark correspond to the expressive fraction of nutrients that remain in the system, and which contribute to a lower replacement in the maintenance of these, after harvesting. The triple arrangement presented greater nutritional accumulation compared to the single and double arrangement. The nutritional efficiency is higher in the triple line arrangement due to greater intraspecific competition. The nutrient content in the different positions along the stem did not present significant nutritional variations for the wood, differently for the bark.Keywords: CLF integration system, forest nutrition, compartments.
