Animal–robot studies can inform us about animal behaviour and inspire advances in agriculture, environmental monitoring and animal health and welfare. Currently, experimental results on how fish are affected by the presence of underwater robots are largely limited to laboratory environments with few individuals and a focus on model species. Laboratory studies provide valuable insight, but their results are not necessarily generalizable to larger scales such as marine aquaculture. This paper examines the effects of underwater robots and a human diver in a large fish aggregation within a Norwegian aquaculture facility, with the explicit purpose to improve the use of underwater robots for fish observations. We observed aquaculture salmon's reaction to the flipper-propelled robot U-CAT in a sea cage with 188 000 individuals. A significant difference in fish behaviour was found using U-CAT when compared to a thruster-driven underwater robot, Argus Mini and a human diver. Specifically, salmon were more likely to swim closer to U-CAT at a lower tailbeat frequency. Fish reactions were not significantly different when considering motor noise or when U-CAT's colour was changed from yellow to silver. No difference was observed in the distance or tailbeat frequency as a response to thruster or flipper motion, when actuated and passively floating robots were compared. These results offer insight into how large aggregations of aquaculture salmon respond to underwater robots. Furthermore, the proposed underwater video processing workflow to assess fish's response to underwater robots is simple and reproducible. This work provides a practical method to study fish–robot interactions, which can lead to improved underwater robot designs to provide more affordable, scalable and effective solutions.

This article presents the results of studying the impact of housing and feeding conditions on broiler chickens of Hubbard RedBro cross, as well as the quality of products obtained when using floor and cage content, in a farm. It established that when receiving a mixed feed of own production using feed raw materials grown on a farm without the use of pesticides, a statistically significant decrease in potentially dangerous substances for animal health is recorded. Compared with factory feed, it has reduced the content of pesticides by 14 times, and mercury and arsenic by 24 times, cadmium by five times, and lead by ten times. The results of the study of economic indicators of growing Hubbard RedBro cross broiler chickens, as well as the chemical composition and quality of carcasses, indicated that there was no significant difference between the floor and cell conditions of keeping. Still, the use of a diet based on eco-feeds contributed to a statistically significant decrease in the concentration of toxic metals in the muscles of the poultry of the experimental groups. As a result, it found that the use of the studied compound feed in the diets of broiler chickens increased the indicators of Biosafety and ensured the production of environmentally safe ("organic") poultry meat products.

Abstract Background Pyropia is an economically advantageous genus of red macroalgae, which has been cultivated in the coastal areas of East Asia for over 300 years. Realizing estimation of macroalgae biomass in a high-throughput way would great benefit their cultivation management and research on breeding and phenomics. However, the conventional method is labour-intensive, time-consuming, manually destructive, and prone to human error. Nowadays, high-throughput phenotyping using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based spectral imaging is widely used for terrestrial crops, grassland, and forest, but no such application in marine aquaculture has been reported. Results In this study, multispectral images of cultivated Pyropia yezoensis were taken using a UAV system in the north of Haizhou Bay in the midwestern coast of Yellow Sea. The exposure period of P. yezoensis was utilized to prevent the significant shielding effect of seawater on the reflectance spectrum. The vegetation indices of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ratio vegetation index (RVI), difference vegetation index (DVI) and normalized difference of red edge (NDRE) were derived and indicated no significant difference between the time that P. yezoensis was completely exposed to the air and 1 h later. The regression models of the vegetation indices and P. yezoensis biomass per unit area were established and validated. The quadratic model of DVI (Biomass = − 5.550DVI2 + 105.410DVI + 7.530) showed more accuracy than the other index or indices combination, with the highest coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and relative estimated accuracy (Ac) values of 0.925, 8.06, and 74.93%, respectively. The regression model was further validated by consistently predicting the biomass with a high R2 value of 0.918, RMSE of 8.80, and Ac of 82.25%. Conclusions This study suggests that the biomass of Pyropia can be effectively estimated using UAV-based spectral imaging with high accuracy and consistency. It also implied that multispectral aerial imaging is potential to assist digital management and phenomics research on cultivated macroalgae in a high-throughput way.

A cross sectional study on infectious bursal disease was conducted in apparently healthy backyard chicken at Waliso district of Southwestern Shoa, central oromia, Ethiopia from from November, 2018 to October, 2019. A total of 282 chickens were randomly selected to estimate seroprevalence of IBD infection and to identify the likely potential risk factors for the disease. Serum samples collected and serological test conducted in laboratory at National Animal Health Diagnosis and Investigation Center Sebeta, Ethopia. Out of 282 serum samples tested 224 were positive for indirect ELISA technique and the overall seroprevalence of IBDV in the study area was found to be 79.43% at individual level. Educational level of owners, kebeles and flock size significantly affect seroprevalence of IBD in the study area. The effect of difference in managements like source of replacement, frequency of house cleaning, use of disinfectant and isolation practice has a significant effect on IBDV sero-prevalence. A lower seroprevalence of IBDV was reported in good hygienic level of house (26.7%) than poor level of chicken house hygiene (96.4%) with statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The seroprevalence of IBDV in the present study associated with chicken management, flock size, owner education level and other animal related risk factors for occurrence of the disease. Therefore, awareness on chicken health management, and importance of immunization would help to minimize the prevalence of the disease and play crucial role in the control of the disease. Furthermore, characterizing virus strains circulating in the area in future study is recommended.

Background: Syndesmosis is an important soft tissue component supporting the ankle stability and commonly injured accompanying with ankle fractures. The accurate reduction and fixation of syndesmosis is essential to obtain better functional results. Therefore, we aimed to find a practical method using the mortise view of ankle to determine the optimal syndesmosis fixation angle intraoperatively. Methods: We randomly selected 200 adults (100 women and 100 men) between 18 - 60 years of age. Three-dimensional anatomical models of tibia and fibula were created using Materialise MIMICS 21. We created a best fit plane on articular surface of medial malleolus and a ninety degrees vertical plane to medial malleolus plane. We determined two splines on cortical borders of tibia and fibula distant from the most superior point of ankle joint in horizontal view. We created two spheres that fit to the predefined splines. The optimal syndesmosis fixation angle was determined measuring the angle between the line connecting the center points of spheres, and the ninety degrees vertical plane to medial malleolus plane. Results: We observed no statistically significant difference between gender groups in terms of optimal syndesmosis fixation angles. The mean age of our study population was 47.1 {plus minus} 10.5. The optimal syndesmosis fixation angle according to mortise view was found as 21 {plus minus} 4.3 degrees. Conclusions: We determined the optimal syndesmosis fixation angle as 21 {plus minus} 4.3 degrees in accordance with the mortise view of ankle. The surgeon could evaluate the whole articular surface of ankle joint with the medial and lateral syndesmotic space in mortise view accurately and at the same position syndesmosis fixation could be performed at 21 {plus minus} 4.3 degrees.

AbstractDiverse communities of symbiotic microbes inhabit the digestive systems of vertebrates and play a crucial role in animal health, and host diet plays a major role in shaping the composition and diversity of these communities. Here, we characterized diet and gut microbiome of fire salamander populations from three Belgian forests. We carried out DNA metabarcoding on fecal samples, targeting eukaryotic 18S rRNA of potential dietary prey items, and bacterial 16S rRNA of the concomitant gut microbiome. Our results demonstrated an abundance of soft-bodied prey in the diet of fire salamanders, and a significant difference in the diet composition between males and females. This sex-dependent effect on diet was also reflected in the gut microbiome diversity, which is higher in males than female animals. Proximity to human activities was associated with increased intestinal pathogen loads. Collectively, the data supports a relationship between diet, environment and intestinal microbiome in fire salamanders, with potential health implications.

The underwater robot is a basic tool to explore the unknown territories in the underwater region of the coastal areas and oceans, both from the scientific and industrial perspectives. With the aim of developing an efficient and environmentally friendly underwater robot, a Squid-like robot with two undulating side fins has been developing for many years by the authors' group in Osaka University, Japan. The high ambitious project started in 2002; from then different models have been developed to reach the goal of achieving a high-performance underwater vehicle. The body and propulsion system of the robot have been developed by following the swimming mechanism of flat-fishes that use undulating side fins, e.g. Squid, Stingray Cuttlefish and Manta. The Squid-robot is now in its fifth generation of development. In the present paper, the review of the development of models of the Squid-robot is presented. The development of the mechanical system and the control system of each model is described in brief. Some CFD computations and motion simulations of Model-4 are also discussed. The background of developing a new model and the updated features are stated for each model respectively. The future target of development of the robot is also pointed out. The objective of this paper is to provide relevant and useful information to the engineers involved in underwater vehicle design, and for those with an interest in the fast-growing area of biomimetic swimming robots.

Antimicrobial use in livestock production is a controversial subject. While antimicrobials should be used as little as possible, it is still necessary, from both an animal health and welfare point of view, to treat infected animals. The study presented here aimed to analyse antimicrobial use on Austrian dairy farms by calculating the number of Defined Course Doses (DCDvet) administered per cow and year for dry cow therapy. Antimicrobial use was analysed by production system and whether farmers stated that they used blanket dry cow therapy (i.e., all cows in the herd were treated) or selective dry cow therapy (i.e., only cows with a positive bacteriological culture or current/recent history of udder disease were treated). A statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) was determined between antimicrobial use for blanket (median DCDvet/cow/year: 0.88) and selective dry cow therapy (median DCDvet/cow/year: 0.41). The difference between antimicrobial use on conventional and organic farms for dry cow therapy as a whole, however, was not statistically significant (p = 0.22) (median DCDvet/cow/year: 0.68 for conventional; 0.53 for organic farms). This analysis demonstrates that selective dry cow therapy leads to a lower overall use of antimicrobials and can assist in a more prudent use of antimicrobials on dairy farms.

Abstract Background The majority of antimicrobials given during the production of pigs are given to nursery pigs. The influence of antimicrobial use on the levels of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) genes is important to quantify to be able to assess the impact of resistance on the food chain and risk to human and animal health. Results This study investigated the response on the levels of nine AMR genes to five different treatment strategies with oxytetracycline, and the dynamics of gene abundance over time by following 1167 pigs from five different farms in Denmark. The results showed no significant difference between treatments and an increase in abundance for the efflux pump encoding tet(A) gene and the genes encoding the ribosomal protection proteins tet(O) and tet(W) tetracycline resistant genes following treatment, while tet(M) showed no response to treatment. However, it was also observed that the levels of tet(O), tet(W), and ermB in some farms would drift more over time compared to a single treatment-course with antibiotic. Conclusion This study underlines the large variation in AMR levels under natural conditions and the need for increased investigation of the complex interactions of antimicrobial treatment and other environmental and managerial practices in swine production on AMR gene abundance.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of plasma progesterone (P4) concentrations on LH release and ovulation in beef heifers and lactating beef cows given gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Previously autoclaved, once-used CIDR inserts (Colazo et al. 2004 Anim. Reprod. Sci. 81, 25-34) were used for experimental purposes to induce differential plasma progesterone concentrations. In Experiment 1, postpubertal heifers received 25 mg of dinoprost i.m. (prostaglandin F (PGF); Lutalyse; Pfizer Animal Health, Montreal, Quebec, Canada). On Day 4 (estrus = Day 0), heifers were randomly assigned (10/group) to receive no treatment (control) or 1 or 2 autoclaved once-used CIDR (Pfizer Animal Health) inserts (1CIDR and 2CIDR, respectively). On Day 5, heifers in the 1CIDR group were given PGF twice 12 h apart. On Day 6, all heifers received 100 �g of GnRH i.m. (Cystorelin; Merial Canada, Inc., Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada). Once daily on Days 4 to 9, a blood sample was collected and ultrasonography was performed. On Day 6, heifers in the control (3.0 � 0.4 ng/mL; mean � SD) and 1CIDR groups (3.0 � 0.3 ng/mL) had lower (P < 0.01) plasma progesterone concentrations than those in the 2CIDR group (5.7 � 0.4 ng/mL). However, the diameter of the dominant follicle was larger (P < 0.001) in heifers in the control and 1CIDR groups than in the 2CIDR group (12.1 � 1.0, 11.5 � 0.7, and 10.1 � 0.7 mm, respectively). More (P < 0.01) heifers ovulated in response to GnRH in the control and 1CIDR groups than in the 2CIDR group (10/10, 9/10, and 3/10, respectively). In Experiment 2, ultrasound-guided follicular ablation (FA) was performed (to synchronize ovarian follicular wave emergence) 4 to 6 days after estrus in 20 postpubertal heifers and 20 mature lactating cows. Cattle were randomly and equally assigned to receive an autoclaved, once-used CIDR, either with no further treatment (High-P4) or with two PGF treatments 12 h apart (Low-P4) given after FA. All cattle received 100 �g of GnRH either 6 days after FA or the day after the dominant follicle reached 9 mm in diameter. Ultrasonography was performed daily (from 4 days after FA to ovulation or to 3 days after GnRH treatment). In three cows and three heifers per group, blood samples were collected every 30 min for 12 h after GnRH. The dominant follicle at GnRH treatment was larger in cows than heifers (11.0 � 1.1 vs. 10.3 � 0.9 mm, respectively; P = 0.05) and tended to be smaller in the High-P4 group vs. the Low-P4 group (10.3 � 1.0 vs. 11.0 � 1.0 mm; P = 0.06). Ovulatory response was not different (P = 0.9) between heifers (77.7%) and cows (78.9%), but combined for heifers and cows, was lower in High-P4 vs. Low-P4 cattle (61.1 vs. 94.7; P < 0.01). The GnRH-induced LH surge did not differ (P = 0.23) between cows and heifers, but it was lower and of shorter duration (P < 0.001) in the High-P4 group than in the Low-P4 group. In summary, higher plasma P4 concentrations resulted in decreased LH release and the proportion of cattle ovulating in response to GnRH treatment. There was no significant difference between heifers and cows in LH release or ovulatory response.

Ovarian asynchrony and variability in response to superstimulation remain the most limiting factors in any embryo transfer program (Armstrong D 1993 Theriogenology 39, 7–24). Ovarian response can be increased and less variable if superstimulatory treatment is started at the time of follicular wave emergence (Bö GA et al. 1995 Theriogenology 43, 31–40). A combination of progesterone (P4) and estradiol have been used to synchronize follicular wave for superstimulation. A retrospective analysis was done to compare the ovarian response, superovulatory response and embryo production of cows in Argentina that received progesterone and estradol prior to superstimulation at different stages of the estrous cycle. This research was carried out using different breed of donors (n = 584, 88% Angus) during the last 4 years in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Heat detection was performed twice a day. At random stages of the estrous cycle, donors received an intravaginal progesterone device (DIB; Syntex, Buenos Aires, Argentina), 2 mg of estradiol benzoate and 50 mg of progesterone (Syntex, Buenos Aires, Argentina) IM on the same day. On day 4 after DIB insertion, superestimulatory treatment was initiated on a decreasing dose regimen of FSH (Pluset; Callier, Spain, or Folltropin, Bioniche Animal Health Inc., Belleville, Ontario, Canada) as IM injections every 12 h over 4 d. On day 6, DIBs were removed, and cows received two doses of 2 mL of cloprostenol 12 h apart. At heat detection, all donors received a dose of 2 mL of GnRH (Dalmarelin; Fatro Von Franken, Buenos Aires, Argentina) by IM injection and were inseminated 12 and 24 h later. Seven days later, embryo collection was performed and ovarian response was evaluated as number of CL + unovulated follicles by transrectal ultrasound using a 7.5-MHz transducer (Pie Medical, Maastricht, the Netherlands). Ova/embryos were evaluated and classified according to the IETS manual. Donors were assigned to receive DIB and estradiol during the following stages of the cycle: group 1: between days 4 and 7 post-estrus (dominant follicle period), group 2: between days 8 and 12 post-estrus (emergence of the second follicular wave), and group 3: between days 13 and 21 post-estrus (dominant follicle of the second wave). Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare variables among groups, and results are shown in Table 1. Ovarian response as CL + unovulated follicles and number of ovulations were significantly different among groups (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the number of fertilized ova or transferable embryos. Nevertheless, numeric differences that show that group 2 (started between days 8 and 12 post-estrus) was always superior for all variables. In conclusion, data suggest that estradiol may be more effective in synchronizing follicle wave emergence for superstimulation during the mid-part of the estrous cycle. Table 1.
