This paper studies the evolution and control of surrounding rock under different pressure relief support conditions in mine roadways in which rockburst events have occurred. The evolution of fractures in the surrounding rock was determined from borehole images obtained with a digital panoramic borehole camera, and the surface displacement due to the rockburst events in the mine roadway was measured. According to the existing problems of the original support system of the roadway, a new coupled support system to prevent rockburst events in mine roadways was proposed, resolving both the pressure relief and support of the roadway. Field measurements indicate that the effect on the roadway under the coupled method of pressure relief and support was more satisfactory than that under the original support system. With the coupled support method, the surface displacement of the roadway was approximately 0.6 m, fractures were distributed only in the soft structures and bolt anchorage areas, and the maximum depth of the fractures was 2.95 m. By contrast, under the original support system, fractures were distributed throughout the roadway surrounding rock, and the maximum depth of fractures was 6.75 m. This coupled roadway support technology of pressure relief and support effectively maintains the stability of the rock surrounding the roadway and ensures the safety of the working face. The research results can provide a reference for damage prevention and support of mine roadways prone to rockburst events.

High-efficiency maintenance and control of the deep coal roadway surrounding rock stability is a reliable guarantee for sustainable development of a coal mine. However, it is difficult to control the stability of a roadway that locates near a roadway with large deformation. With return air roadway 21201 (RAR 21201) in Hulusu coal mine as the research background, in situ investigation, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and engineering practice were carried out to study pressure relief effect on the surrounding rock after the severe deformation of the roadway. Besides, the feasibility of excavating a new roadway near this damaged one by means of pressure relief effect is also discussed. Results showed that after the strong mining roadway suffered huge loose deformation, the space inside shrank so violently that surrounding rock released high stress to a large extent, which formed certain pressure relief effect on the rock. Through excavating a new roadway near this deformed one, the new roadway could obtain a relative low stress environment with the help of the pressure relief effect, which is beneficial for maintenance and control of itself. Equal row spacing double-bearing ring support technology is proposed and carried out. Engineering practice indicates that the new excavated roadway escaped from possible separation fracture in the roof anchoring range, and the surrounding rock deformation of the new roadway is well controlled, which verifies the pressure relief effect mentioned. This paper provides a reference for scientific mining under the condition of deep buried and high stress mining in western China.

The stress concentration of gob-side entry surrounding rock is a hot topic in coal mining. In this paper, through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the pressure relief mechanism of the gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting and pressure release (RCPR) and the spatiotemporal development law of surrounding rock stress of the gob-side entry were analyzed. The studies showed that the gob-side entry retaining by RCPR shortened the length of the lateral cantilever by directional roof cutting, which weakened the stress level of the gob-side entry. In the meantime, the goaf gangues could play a good filling role by using their breaking and swelling characteristics under the action of gangue-blocking supports and further optimized the stress environment along the roadway. Field industrial tests verified that the gob-side entry retaining by RCPR had a significant effect on pressure relief, and the surrounding rock stress and deformation tended to stabilize after about 160 m of lagging working face. Numerical analysis reproduced the whole process of “mining-retention-using” of roof cutting roadway and revealed that surrounding rocks were always in the zone of relative stress reduction during the whole process. The peak value of mining-induced lateral stress was about 10 m away from the middle point of the gob-side entry. The change of surrounding rock stress could be divided into three stages: significant increase, dynamic adjustment, and stable stage. However, during the second mining, the stress connected zone would appear on the leading working face, and the stress concentration in this zone was significant. Based on the above analysis, we concluded that the new technology could be applied to the medium-thickness coal seam in the composite roof.

As the mining depth increases, under the influence of high ground stress, the surrounding rock of deep mine roadways shows soft rock characteristics. Under the influence of mining disturbance at the working face, large deformation of the roadway has occurred. To control the large deformation of the roadway, many mines have adopted the form of combined support, which has continuously increased the support strength and achieved a certain effect. However, since the stress environment of the surrounding rock of the roadway has not been changed, large deformation of the roadway still occurs in many cases. Based on the theoretical basis of academician Manchao He’s “short cantilever beam by roof cutting,” this paper puts forward the plan of “presplitting blasting + combined support” to control the large deformation of the deep mine roadways. Without changing the original support conditions of the roadway, presplitting blasting the roof strata of the roadway, by cutting off the mechanical connection of the roof strata between the roadway and gob, improves the stress distribution of the roadway to control the large deformation. Through field tests, the results show that after presplitting blasting the roadway roof, the roadway roof subsidence is reduced by 47.9%, the ribs displacement is reduced by 45.7%, and the floor heave volume is reduced by 50.8%. The effect is significant.

When stratified mining is adopted in high-gas and extrathick coal seam, a large amount of pressure-relief gas of the lower layer flows into the upper layer goaf along the cracks in the layer, resulting in upper layer working face to frequently exceed the gas limit. And ordinary drilling can no longer meet the requirements of the pressure-relief gas drainage of the lower layer. The 205 working face of Tingnan Coal Mine is taken as the test background in this paper, and based on the “pressure-relief and flow-increase” effect of the lower layer under the action of mining stress during the upper layer mining, the gas drainage of kilometer directional drilling in lower layer is studied. According to the distribution characteristics of support pressure before and after the working face, the pressure-relief principle, fracture development characteristics, and gas migration law of the lower layered coal body are analyzed in the process of advancing the upper layered working face in the extrathick coal seam with high gas. The maximum depth of goaf damage is calculated theoretically, and the Flac3D numerical simulation of the failure deformation of the 205 working face floor is carried out. It is found that the maximum depth of plastic failure of the lower layer is about 13 m. According to the plastic deformation of the lower layer under different vertical depths and the movement of coal and rock mass, it is determined that the reasonable range of kilometer directional drilling in the lower layer is 6–9 m below the floor vertical depth. From 15 m to 45 m in the two parallel grooves, there is no fracture failure with a sharp increase or decrease in the displacement in the local range. Meanwhile, in this part, the roof falling behind is not easy to compaction, and the displacement of the floor is large, which does not cause plastic damage. The degree of pressure relief is more sufficient, and the permeability of the lower layer is good. Therefore, drilling should be arranged as much as possible along the working face in this tendency range. The determination of reasonable arrangement range of kilometer directional drilling in extrathick coal seam provides reference index and theoretical guidance for industrial test of working face and also provides new ideas for gas control of stratified mining face in high-gas and extrathick coal seam.

The deformation control of the surrounding rock during gob-side entry driving along deeply fully mechanized caving island working face is one of the main bottlenecks affecting the successful and efficient production in modern mining. The prior ordinary fully mechanized caving theories have been difficult in ensuring the safe and efficient mining along island working face during gob-side entry driving under the complex conditions in the west. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to carry out the research on the deformation mechanism and control of the surrounding rock during gob-side entry driving along deeply fully mechanized caving island working face. This paper, by means of experimental research, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation, and field industrial test, systemically researched the deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock and the law of strata behaviors during gob-side entry driving along deeply fully mechanized caving island working face.

Deformation and failure mechanism of the surrounding rock of the floor roadway under the influence of working face mining is complicated, and roadway control is difficult. The floor roadway of the 11123 working face in Pan’er Mine is taken as the research object of this study based on semi-infinite body theory of elastic mechanics to establish a mechanical model along the advancing direction of the working face and derive the stress expression of any point in the affected area of floor mining. According to the theoretical results, effective reinforcement and support schemes are then proposed. FLAC3D numerical simulation analyzes the stress and deformation of the surrounding rock of the floor roadway before and after the reinforcement. The numerical simulation results showed that (1) mining abutment pressure of the overlying working face forms a certain range of stress concentration on the roof and two sides of the roadway and will cause deformation and damage to the floor roadway and (2) overall bearing capacity of the surrounding rock of the roadway is significantly improved, and surface displacement of the floor roadway is reduced by 64 mm through the reinforcement and support of the floor roadway. On-site monitoring data of the floor roadway in the 11123 working face of Pan’er Mine showed that the maximum displacement of the roadway roof and two sides is controlled at approximately 80 mm, and the surrounding rock deformation of the roadway is appropriately controlled to meet the needs of safe production.

Rock burst is a typical dynamic disaster in deep underground coal mining. Based on the support problems of the deep roadways in fully mechanized caving face 401111 of Hujiahe Coal Mine suffering from rock burst in Shaanxi Province of China, the failure law and influencing factors of the surrounding rock of the roadway are analyzed. The results show that the deformation of surrounding rock in the roadway shows the characteristics of elastic, plastic transformation, rheology, and expansion. At the same time, it has the typical characteristics of deep roadway, such as the fast deformation speed, long duration, asymmetric deformation, and large loose broken area of surrounding rock. Based on the principle of “strengthening support in shallow zones” and “deep pressure relief in deep zones” in the surrounding rock, the control scheme of surrounding rock in the return roadway of fully mechanized caving working face 401111 is proposed by taking the large diameter pressure relief and deep hole blasting as the main means of pressure relief. The practice shows that the surrounding rock of the return roadway is relatively stable after the implementation of the new scheme, which shows that the design of the new support scheme is reasonable and reliable. It is of great significance for the stability control of surrounding rock of the mining roadway suffering from rock burst.

Gob-side entry retaining technology with roof cutting (GERRC) has been widely used in flat and near-flat coal seam conditions, but its application under inclined coal seam is still very deficient. In order to further improve the application system of GERRC and overcome the application difficulties under special geological conditions, this paper takes the 43073 working face of Yixin coal mine as an example to research the GERRC with upper roadway under gently inclined thick coal seam. Firstly, the difficulties in the upper entry retaining with inclined coal seam are analyzed and the corresponding key technologies and system designs are put forward. Subsequently, the roof cutting and upper entry retaining are designed in detail according to geological conditions of test working face, and the roof cutting and pressure releasing effect is analyzed by numerical simulation to expound the stress distribution and pressure releasing mechanism of surrounding rock. Finally, the upper entry retaining field test is carried out to verify the feasibility and applicability of the technology and related designs. Through field monitoring, it is found that the weighting step increases significantly, the weighting strength decreases effectively on the roof cutting side, and the pressure relief effect is obvious. Meanwhile, the maximum roof to floor convergence is 361 mm and the maximum shrinkage of both sides is 280 mm, so the retained entry can meet the reuse requirement of adjacent working face.

Affected by the mining activities of the working face, the surrounding rock of the roadway is easily deformed and destroyed. For deep buried roadways, the deformation and destruction of the surrounding rock is particularly prominent. Under the influence of in situ stress fluctuation, 3−1103 tailgate of the Hongqinghe coal mine was in a complex stress environment with a maximum stress exceeding 20 MPa. Affected by mining stress, the roadway behind the working face was seriously deformed. In order to alleviate the deformation of the roadway, directional blasting and cutting measures for the 3−1103 tailgate were adopted in this paper. The mechanism of crack propagation in single-row to three-hole directional blasting was revealed by numerical simulation. The blasted rock was divided into three regions according to the crack condition. The numerical analysis of the cutting heights of 0 m, 10 m, 12 m, and 14 m, respectively, showed the stress peaks of different cutting heights and the deformation law of the surrounding rock. The pressure relief effect was the best at 14 m cutting height. At this time, the peak stress was 39 MPa with the smallest roadway deformation. Based on numerical simulation and theoretical analysis results, engineering tests were carried out. Field monitoring showed that the deformation of the roadway was inversely proportional to the roof cutting height. The higher the cutting height is, the more preferential the roadway is to reach the stable state. It can be concluded that directional blasting can change the surrounding rock structure, control the deformation of the roadway, and play a role in pressure relief. It provides a new measure to control roadway deformation.

In order to solve the problem of safe and rapid excavation and support of roadway with large section and extra-thick top coal under complex geological conditions, the deformation mechanism and control of roadway are analyzed by means of field investigation, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field practice, taking the 2203 transportation roadway of a mine in Shanxi Province as the engineering background. The results show the following: (1) the concentration of normal tensile stress in the middle of large-span roadway roof and end shear stress is significant, which may easily lead to the separation of roof and the extrusion deformation of surrounding rock; (2) the surface shear failure depth of the roadway side is large, and the insufficient length of the bolt, the small density of the protective side, and the insufficient support strength are easy to cause the bulge and splitting of the coal wall; (3) roof joints and fractures are developed, and the dirt band of different thickness occurs, so it is easy for the roof separation and the anchor solids to cut down along the weak surface of the dirt band; (4) the geological structure produces horizontal movement of surrounding rock, which easily leads to poor supporting effect of roadway roof and material deformation and failure. Finally, a safe and economic comprehensive support system of “high-strength, high-resistance, and high-prestressed anchor cable support system + high-strength support of the two sides roadway + U-shaped anchor cable combined truss” is proposed, and the control mechanism is explained and applied successfully in the field.
