BackgroundThe goal of veterinary education is to prepare learners to successfully enter the profession. However, the transition from learner to professional can be an intense and stressful phase. In this study, recently graduated veterinarians’ perceptions of readiness to work independently and to successfully cope with early career challenges are addressed.MethodsA survey based on five commonly occurring entrustable professional activities (EPAs) in primary care was sent to newly qualified veterinarians (graduated between six months and three-and-a-half years ago and working in primary veterinary clinics). The survey was a combination of open and Likert scale-type questions and contained items on the self-reported need for supervision for these EPAs. One hundred and fifty-six participants (response rate 41.2 per cent) answered the survey. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse and present the quantitative data.ResultsThe day-one after graduation levels varied per EPA between ‘with direct, proactive supervision’ and ‘supervision at a distance’. On average after 6.8 months participants felt ready to execute all five tasks with distant supervision. After almost 10 months, participants had the feeling of being fully competent to execute the EPAs unsupervised.ConclusionThis study provides insight into early career challenges faced by recently graduated veterinarians. The results emphasise the importance of adequate preparation of veterinarians during education and the importance of guidance during early career to foster a successful transition from veterinary school to clinical practice.

11041 Background: Twitter (TW) is an essential tool in the medical community. Few studies have examined the use of TW by medical trainees. We aimed to assess its utilization among trainees in hematology-oncology related areas (HORAs). Methods: 576 training programs in HORAs were obtained. We contacted a potential pool of 3,142 trainees. A 50 item survey was distributed between 2/2019-5/2019, focusing on: demographics, professional use, attitudes toward TW, and patient interactions. Responses were analyzed using parametric descriptive statistics. Results: 442 responses (14% response rate) were received; 203 (46%) used a TW account for professional activities. See table for demographics. The most common reasons for using TW were: continuous education (73%), dissemination of information (62%), and networking (62%). > 80% of users have positive views on using TW for: promoting academic discussions (92%), trainees education (89%), and conference networking (83%). 50 (25%) have used TW for collaborations, with abstracts and papers being the most common (20%). Most agreed or strongly agreed that TW: is a useful education tool (89%), and might be useful for career advancement (85%). The most common challenges were: the value of TW content can be decreased by irrelevant content and biased sources (64%), not peer-reviewed (51%), and difficulty searching information (50%). 68% considered that programs should promote the engagement of trainees, but only 21% reported instruction in the use of TW. 83% agree or strongly agree that TW is useful for physicians and patient interactions, but 82% have concerns about legal repercussions. Conclusions: Almost half of trainees in HORAs use TW for professional activities. The most common uses are for education, dissemination of information and networking. Most trainees that use TW have positive views regarding education and academic collaborations. Use of Twitter may strengthen trainees’ education, provide mentorship opportunities, and promote career advancement. Challenges on TW use should continue to be addressed. [Table: see text]

First, the study provides an overview of the current state of research in Germany concerning the „black scene”. After the presentation of the history and development of the scene a comprehensive stylistic analysis is focused, which also introduces signs and symbols of this youth culture as well as their usage. In an empirical analysis the authoress draws a comparison in two ways: first between the self-perception of the scene on the one hand and the medial perception on the other hand, and secondly concerning the different medial representation in two different newspapers – the Leipziger Volkszeitung and the BILD-Zeitung. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, the authoress provides a complex insight into the goth scene, which is medial striking but nevertheless little known in its internal differentiations.

ObjectiveTo obtain insight into tobacco retailing by alcohol-licenced premises, in order to understand the financial importance of tobacco sales for such retailers.MethodData were collected by a telephone survey of 1042 clubs, hotels and packaged liquor outlets in New South Wales, Australia. The response rate was 86.1%. Qualitative and quantitative data were obtained. Logistic and linear regression were used to determine factors associated with the probability of selling and stopping selling and the importance of cigarette sales.ResultsMore than a third (36.4%) of premises contacted did not sell cigarettes. 147 (an estimated 18.1% of those who had ever sold) had stopped selling. There were significant differences in the probability of selling, in the reported importance of cigarette sales and in the probability of stopping selling, between different outlet types and other outlet characteristics (number of gaming machines, proximity of nearest alternative tobacco retailer and remoteness). Outlets where alcohol can be consumed were more likely to rate cigarette sales as ‘not important’ than ‘important’.ConclusionsDespite claims by tobacco companies that tobacco sales are important for many Australian retailers, tobacco sales appear to be of limited importance for alcohol-licenced premises. This means that opposition to stopping tobacco sales where alcohol is consumed and/or sold may be less than expected.

Girls into Geoscience (GiG) is an initiative aiming to empower and encourage girls to consider degrees and careers in the Geosciences. Currently, < 40 % of places on Geoscience courses in the UK are taken up by girls, and this is something we are actively and successfully addressing. Our founding GiG event runs for 2 days and is primarily aimed at year 12 female students who are thinking about applying for university. June 2014 saw the first Girls into Geoscience day, and since then nearly 400 girls have attended from across the UK. On day one we offer a fieldtrip, whilst day two consists of a day of talks and workshops, with topics from across the geosciences. The aim of the talks is to showcase the range of Geoscience career pathways that are possible across industry and academia, and provide role models for the girls. Speakers span the career spectrum from early career to experienced scientists, and they talk about their unique journey to becoming Earth Scientists, as well as informing the students about different disciplines and roles possible after graduation. In the afternoon, an insight into the university experience is given through hands-on workshops across a range of geoscience topics, giving the attendees the opportunity to focus on their interests or try something new. Data collected from attendees has shown real impact. For example, in 2016, 75% of attendees at the end of the event said that they were more likely to consider studying geology, whilst 9% were already planning on doing so. A year later these students were about to start university courses, and 78% of respondents (55% response rate) were off to study geoscience or related courses at university. While in 2017, 70% of the students said they were more likely to do geology following GiG, and 63% (39% response rate) went on to do geoscience related course in 2018, and in 2018 84% said they were more likely to study geology following GiG, and 85% (38% response rate) were off to do geoscience related courses in 2019. Significantly, 100% of all those responding 1 year later said they would recommend attending GiG to those interested in the Geosciences.

Since we started GiG we have seen many changes and positive steps in the recruitment, recognition and retention of women in STEM but there is still work to do nationally and internationally. We have supported the development of new initiatives and GiG Ireland has now been running for 3 years, GiG Scotland held their inaugural event in Glasgow in August 2019, and GiG Wales is planned for 2020. We have supported the development of new initiatives, and GiG Ireland has now been running for 3 years, GiG Scotland held their inaugural event in Glasgow in August 2019, and GiG Wales is planned for 2020. We are also working with other UK universities to develop Junior GiG for younger students with the aim of inspiring even younger students, the University of Leicester held the first GiGjr in 2019. We are also working with other UK universities to develop Junior GiG for younger students with the aim of inspiring even younger students. This article aims to explore the Shaykh-mur?d (disciple) or teacher-pupil relationship as portrayed in Western Sufi life writing in recent decades, observing elements of continuity and discontinuity with classical Sufism. Additionally, it traces the influence on the texts of certain developments in religiosity in contemporary Western societies, especially New Age understandings of religious authority. Studying these works will provide an insight into the diversity of expressions of contemporary Sufism, while shedding light on a phenomenon which seems to fly in the face of contemporary social and religious trends which deemphasize external authority and promote the authority of the self or individual autonomy.

One of the central questions in modern poetics is, how literary writing proceeds from the creative richness of its material to an aesthetic determination as autonomous art. Sten Nadolnys lectures on his poetics enable an astonishing insight into the self-organisation of operations beyond writing, which can be considered as a theory of self-values in literature.

Not all transit users have the same preferences when making route decisions. Understanding the factors driving this heterogeneity enables better tailoring of policies, interventions, and messaging. However, existing methods for assessing these factors require extensive data collection. Here we present an alternative approach - an easily-administered single item measure of overall preference for speed versus comfort. Scores on the self-report item predict decisions in a choice task and account for a proportion of the differences in model parameters between people (n=298). This single item can easily be included on existing travel surveys, and provides an efficient method to both anticipate the choices of users and gain more general insight into their preferences.
