The aim of this study was to verify the possible interactions between ethanol extracts ofAmburana cearensisA. C. Smith andAnadenanthera macrocarpa(Benth.) Brenan, combined with six antimicrobial drugs against multiresistant strains ofStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia coliisolated from humans. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was determined using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The microdilution assay was performed to verify the interactions between the natural products and the antibiotics using a subinhibitory concentration. The activity of amikacin associated with the extract ofAnadenanthera macrocarpaagainst EC 27 was enhanced, demonstrating an MIC reduction from 128 to 4 μg/mL. Among theβ-lactams, no potentiation on its activity was observed, with exception to the antagonism of the natural products with ampicillin againstS. aureus358.

Abstract. Background: This is the first report demonstrating the antibiotic-modifying activity of cholecalciferol. Aim: In this study, cholecalciferol was evaluated against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. Methods: The antibacterial and modulatory effects of cholecalciferol, ergosterol, and cholesterol (8–512 μg/mL) were evaluated by microdilution assay against multiresistant bacterial strains. Results: Cholecalciferol, when combined with aminoglycosides, was more effective against P. aeruginosa, reducing the concentration of amikacin and gentamicin necessary to inhibit bacterial growth from 156.25 to 39.06 μg/mL and from 39.06 to 9.76 μg/mL, respectively. It is possible that cholecalciferol, due to its lipid-soluble nature, had a lipophilic interaction with the cell membrane, enhancing antibiotic uptake. Cholesterol and ergosterol were used to see if the mechanism of action of cholecalciferol was similar to that of these lipid compounds. Ergosterol and cholesterol increased aminoglycoside activity, where the effect was greater with higher subinhibitory concentration of sterol. Conclusions: There is no reported study on the use of cholesterol and ergosterol as modulators of antibiotics or any other drug, making this the first study in this area highlighting the interaction between cholesterol, ergosterol, and cholecalciferol with regard to modifying aminoglycoside activity.

The antibacterial activity of geraniol and its effect in combination with ampicillin, amoxicillin and clarithromycin against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Helicobacter pylori was tested. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and combinatory effects of geraniol against the bacteria were assessed by using the modified broth microdilution and checkerboard assay, respectively. The combinatory effect is expressed as fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI). The MIC of geraniol against S. aureus, E. coli and H. pylori was found to be 11200, 5600, and 7325 μg/mL, respectively. A significant synergistic effect was observed with geraniol and ampicillin against S. aureus with FICI in the range 0.19 to 0.32. Geraniol and ampicillin exhibited a partial synergistic effect against E. coli. A similar effect was observed with geraniol and clarithromycin against S. aureus. A partial synergistic effect was observed with clarithromycin and geraniol against H. pylori with the FICI value in the range 0.86 to 0.89. An additive effect was observed with geraniol and amoxicillin combination against H. pylori. However, the amoxicillin and clarithromycin dose was reduced by thirty-two fold when combined with geraniol against H. pylori. The anti- H. pylori effect of geraniol with clarithromycin and amoxicillin could be of potential interest in the treatment of H. pylori infection and associated ulcers in humans. Further, geraniol, in combination with other antibiotics, has substantial therapeutic potential against S. aureus and E.coli infection.

Seagrass is a part of Phanerogamae, commonly has a symbiotic relationship with microbial endophytes. The types of microbes those have ability to produce bioactive compounds with potentially exploited for medical, agriculture and industrial purposes. Antibacterial testing using the modified Kirby-Bauer method. The fungi show a strong antibiotic activity which cultivated statically and Staphylococcus aureus was induced in rice medium for 10 days. The purpose of inducing bacteria to the culture is to stimulate a strong antibiotic activity through Silence Biosynthesis Pathway. Fungal isolates were macerated with 96% of ethanol for 24 hours. Partition process was performed by adding solvents (ethyl acetate, n-hexane, ethanol and water) to get n-hexane, ethanol and water fractions. All fractions were tested their activity against clinical isolates bacteria S. aureus and Escherichia coli. Ten fungal endophytes were isolated from seagrass Thalassia hemprichii and Enhalus acoroides. Two isolates derived from the leaf of both seagrass specimens (E.D.1 and Th.D.1) showed strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus only. Antibacterial activity test of each fraction both active isolates show in water and ethanol fractions. This indicates the active antibacterial compounds of both endophytic fungi have semi-polar and polar characteristics. However, bacterial induction has no effect on their antibacterial activity. Keywords : Endophytic fungi, Thalassia hemprichii, Enhalus acoroides, antibacterial activity Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

In this work, Ni and SnO2loaded Chitosan nanomaterials are prepared by neutralization method, obtained by drop wise addition of Chitosan solution to a solution of NaOH, followed by cross-linking. The Structural, morphological and Raman analyses are carried out. The antibacterial activity is analysed against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and evaluated by the calculation of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The obtained results show that, Ni-loaded nanoparticles could inhibit the growth of various bacteria better than SnO2. These results revealed that, the exposure of Staphylococcus aureus to the Chitosan nanoparticles led to the disruption of cell membranes and the leakage of cytoplasm.
