Why Hazing? Measuring the Motivational Mechanisms of Newcomer Induction in College Fraternities

AbstractHazing behaviors as a part of group initiations have been theorized to contribute to a sense of group solidarity, to ensure loyalty and commitment of group members, to teach group-relevant skills and attitudes to group members, and to reinforce the social hierarchy within groups. In a survey of members of an international college fraternity (n=2833), researchers propose and test a four-dimensional model of hazing motivation. Using exploratory factor analysis, the proposed four-factor model explains 74 percent of the overall variance and confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated acceptable model fit. Correlation and regression analysis suggested that social dominance- motivated hazing is strongly associated with hazing tolerance, moral disengagement, and a variety of measures related to organizational commitment and attachment.

Abstract. The Therapist Adherence Measure (TAM-R) is a central assessment within the quality-assurance system of Multisystemic Therapy (MST). Studies into the validity and reliability of the TAM in the US have found varying numbers of latent factors. The current study aimed to reexamine its factor structure using two independent samples of families participating in MST in the Netherlands. The factor structure was explored using an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) in Sample 1 ( N = 580). This resulted in a two-factor solution. The factors were labeled “therapist adherence” and “client–therapist alliance.” Four cross-loading items were dropped. Reliability of the resulting factors was good. This two-factor model showed good model fit in a subsequent Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in Sample 2 ( N = 723). The current finding of an alliance component corroborates previous studies and fits with the focus of the MST treatment model on creating engagement.

Abstract.FACTORIAL STRUCTURE ANALYSIS OF THE APRENDER A CONVIVIR PROGRAM OBSERVATION SCALE IN 3-YEAR OLD (ROAC-3)The present study analyzes the factorial structure and the internal consistency of the observation scale of the Aprender a Convivir program for 3-year-old (ROAC-3) used to assess student learning related with the contents worked on the Aprender a Convivir program. Aprender a Convivir program is aimed at 3 to 7-year-old students and develop social competence with a preventive purpose (Alba, Justicia-Arráez, Pichardo y Justicia, 2013). Results show the existence of seven factors within the ROAC-3, after the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis performed. Likewise, a social competence one-factor model was found for the scale, considering that the variables were positively and statistically significant around the social competence latent factor. In general, internal consistency coefficients of ROAC-3 were adequate.Key words: Aprender a Convivir program, social competence, observation scale, confimatory factor analysis.Resumen.En la siguiente investigación se analiza la estructura factorial y la consistencia interna del Registro de Observación del programa Aprender a Convivir en 3 años (ROAC-3), utilizado para evaluar el aprendizaje del alumnado en relación con los contenidos abordados en este programa de intervención. Aprender a Convivir es un programa dirigido al alumnado de 3 a 7 años que desarrolla la competencia social con un objetivo de prevención (Alba, Justicia-Arráez, Pichardo y Justicia, 2013). Los resultados encontrados tras los análisis exploratorios y confirmatorios, muestran la existencia de siete factores dentro de la escala. Por otro lado, se obtuvo un modelo unifactorial del registro total ya que los siete factores se relacionaron de forma positiva en torno a un factor latente, la competencia social. Los índices de consistencia interna del ROAC-3 fueron adecuados.Palabras clave: Aprender a Convivir, Educación Infantil, registro de observación, competencia social.

  Objectives: The DREEM inventory has been universally established as a generic instrument to assess health-related educational programs. There were some apprehensions regarding the psychometric properties of the DREEM raised in last few years. This study evaluated first ever the psychometric properties of the Bahasa Melayu version of the DREEM in a sample of Malaysian medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried and universal sampling method was applied. Researchers selected 1-5th-year medical students of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Malaysia, as study subjects. Researchers collected data through a guided self-administered questionnaire during a face-to-face session.Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the one factor model of DREEM-M (Model A), consisting 50 items were not fit, indicating it was a multidimensional instrument. On further CFA, it appeared that the proposed five-factor structure was not fit (Model B) as all the goodness-of-fit indices did not signify a model fit.Conclusions: The study findings revealed that the DREEM inventory 50-item inventory failed to achieve a model fit, but it demonstrated a high of internal consistency. The proposed 19-item DREEM-M revealed good model fit.

Abstract Background The Revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire (APS-POQ-R) evaluates the patient-reported quality of pain management in adults. A validated APS-POQ-R is pivotal to guide effective pain management with better patient satisfaction. Previous studies revealed that subscales of “patients’ perception of pain management” were unstable cross-culturally. This study aims to evaluate the construct validity of the APS-POQ-R in gynecological postoperative patients with a multi-cultural background using confirmatory factor analysis to allow comparisons among different a priori models at the latent factor level. Methods Patients aged 18 years old or above and who were scheduled for gynecology surgery were selected. Three different models with a combination of latent factors were based on a priori hypotheses from previous studies. The root-mean-squared error of approximation, comparative fit index, Tucker-Lewis Index, Chi-squared test, and change in Chi-squared statistic given a change in degrees of freedom between models were used to assess the model fit to the present data. Results A total of 302 patients completed the questionnaire. The five-factor model which was based on Gordon’s study has an acceptable fit for the data and was superior when compared to the one-factor baseline model. Although the four-factor model, which originated from Botti’s study, also demonstrates a good model fit, the “perception of care” construct was excluded in this model. The “perception of care” construct is conceptually important as patient-centered care has become the focus of quality improvement of pain service. Conclusions The APS-POQ-R is easy to administer and is useful for quality evaluation in postoperative pain management. The present study demonstrates that a five-factor structure of the APS-POQ-R is the best fitting model in our patient sample. The results of this study provide further evidence to support the use of APS-POQ-R as a measurement tool for pain management evaluation in acute postoperative patients with a multi-cultural background.

Dukungan sosial adalah pemberian bantuan dari seseorang kepada orang lain berupa perhatian emosional, bantuan materil, pemberian informasi, penghargaan, pujian, pemecahan masalah dan bantuan nyata, sehingga orang yang mendapatkan dukungan tersebut merasa dihargai dan dicintai. Salah satu bagian dari dukungan sosial adalah dukungan teman sebaya. Hal tersebut bisa berupa penerimaan dari teman terhadap individu, yang menimbulkan persepsi dalam dirinya bahwa ia disayangi, diperhatikan, dihargai, dan ditolong, sehingga menimbulkan perasaan bahwa kita memiliki arti bagi orang lain atau menjadi bagian dari jaringannya. Menurut Weiss (dalam Cutrona dan Russell, 1987) komponen dukungan sosial meliputi pemenuhan 6 hal kebutuhan, yaitu emotional attachment, social integration, reassurance of worth, reliable alliance, guidance, dan opportunity for nurturance. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji validitas kostruk instrumen tersebut. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari santri kelas 1 extention Pondok Pesantren Daar El- Qolam yang berjumlah 204 orang. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengujinya adalah confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) menggunakan software LISREL 8.70. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bawa seluruh item yang berjumlah 23 item bersifat unidimensional. Artinya seluruh item hanya mengukur satu faktor saja, sehingga model satu faktor yang diteorikan oleh The Social Provisions Scale dapat diterima. Social support is the provision of assistance from someone to others in the form emotional attention, material assistance, information giving, appreciation, praise, problem solving and real help so that people who get that support feel valued and loved. One of the parts of social support is peer support. This can be in the form of acceptance from friends to individuals, which gives rise to a perception in him/her that he/she is loved, cared for, appreciated, and helped, giving rise to feelings that we matter to others. According to Weiss (in Cutrona and Russel, 1987) the component of social support includes the fulfillment of six things: emotional attachment, social integration, reassurance of worth, reliable alliance, guidance, and opportunity for nurturance. This study aims to examine the validity of the boarding instrument. The data in this research were obtained from students in class 1 extention of Daar El-Qolam Islamic Boarding School with 204 people. The method that used to test them is confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using LISREL 8.70 as the software. The results of this research show that all items, totaling 23 items, are unidimensional. This means that all items only measure one factor so that a one-factor model theorized by The Social Provisions Scale is acceptable.

The Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS) is a 45-item self-report measure of perfectionism with three overarching factors: rigid, self-critical, and narcissistic perfectionism. Our objective was to create a brief version of the BTPS, the Big Three Perfectionism Scale–Short Form (BTPS-SF). Sixteen items were selected, and confirmatory factor analysis using a large sample of Canadian university students ( N = 607) revealed the BTPS-SF had acceptable model fit. Moreover, the BTPS-SF displayed strong test–retest reliability. The relationships of the BTPS-SF factors with depression, anxiety, stress, emotional intelligence, personality, resiliency, and elements of subjective well-being also suggested adequate criterion validity. Overall, results suggest the BTPS-SF represents an efficient, easily administered, and novel means of assessing multidimensional perfectionism.

This study was conducted to describe the validation of learning environment inventory (LEI) for secondary school contexts. A survey method was used for data collection through the 20-item LEI. This study consists of two phases. In Phase 1, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 21) involving data collected from 150 students, which resulted in the extraction of four factors related to learning environment; (a) Learner-centered, (b) Knowledge-centered, (c) Assessment-centered, and (d) Community-centered. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out in Phase 2 with a new sample (N = 268) which resulted in strong model fit estimation. Such results confirmed the factor structure of Phase 1 and resulted in a final 12-item scale, which may be considered as an acceptable model.

Recent research has suggested that the Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) is a multidimensional rather than a unidimensional measure. The present study challenged this position on both conceptual and empirical grounds. After deleting three questionable items from the SPAS, a series of confirmatory factor analyses were conducted across four samples of women who had completed the scale. Across all samples, the model fit indices (i.e., all > .90) suggested that a nine-item, single factor model of the SPAS is more parsimonious and conceptually clear than a two-factor model. It is recommended that researchers of social physique anxiety begin to use the nine-item version of the SPAS described in this paper.

Empathy and theory of mind (ToM) are distinctive psychological constructs in predicting children’s social functioning. This study provided evidence of the independent nature of these constructs and developed a parent questionnaire for measuring individual differences in children’s empathy and ToM. In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis based on responses of 116 parents of Hong Kong children established a three-factor structure of the Empathy and Theory of Mind Scale (EToMS), that is, Empathy, Nice ToM, and Nasty ToM. An additional 189 parents of Study 2 confirmed this three-factor model. A subsample of 93 children (M=4.97, SD = .84, 47 boys) from Study 2 took part in child measures of helping and lying behaviors as well as false belief understanding. The results supported the reliability and validity of the EToMS, making it a useful assessment of children’s social predispositions.

AbstractThe present article focuses on the validation of the Questionnaire of Social Representations about the Functions of Deliberate Self-Harm for adults. The understanding of the social representations about deliberate self-harm can be relevant for clinical intervention and prevention. However, there is still a lack of instruments to assess these representations. The basis for this instrument was the translation of the Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury. To complement this instrument, we conducted semi-directive interviews with adults without deliberate self-harm and analysed the Portuguese written press. Results from these studies complemented the questionnaire with new items and functions. Study 1 consisted of an exploratory factor analysis with a sample of 462 adults. Results revealed a two-factor structure of interpersonal and intrapersonal dimensions. After item reduction, the factorial analysis of the independent functions was also acceptable. This structure was then corroborated in Study 2 by a confirmatory factor analysis with a new sample of 474 adults, revealing an acceptable model fit. This questionnaire presents a relatively solid structure and is based on acceptable psychometric properties, which allows its use in future research.
