Ptolemaic cartonnage masks were produced by layering textiles – or reused papyrus sheets – with plaster and glue. Despite the use of the same basic components, the process of manufacture could vary depending on shape, size, time and place. This article aims to clarify the production methods and the different phases of manufacture of these masks, using different imagery techniques, such as X-ray, CT and surface scanning. To provide a better understanding of their production, we examined these masks layer by layer, considering the use of a mould to shape the face from inside, the layering of textile, the application of gesso to strengthen the mask or to sculpt features, and finally the decorative layer of paints and gilding.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema are rare complications of labor, especially in the late pregnancy period, but they are usually self-limiting. Management includes avoidance of exacerbative factors and close observation with supportive treatment. A 19-year-old primi gravida at 36 weeks pregnancy presented with swelling over the right side of the face, neck and chest. Her general examination was normal. Systemic examination revealed swelling with palpatory crepitation over the right side of chest, neck and face, and other examination findings were normal. Chest X-ray revealed subcutaneous emphysema without pneumothorax. The patient left hospital against medical advice. Keywords: Pregnancy; subcutaneous emphysema; pneumomediastinum.

Similar to Medicine, digital communication, information processing, and x-ray imaging have changed the face of dentistry. The incorporation of digital systems into medical and dental practice has necessitated development of a standard that allows reliable transmission of information between the devices taking the images, devices storing the images, and devices displaying the images. This standard is termed as DICOM. The following article briefly reviews how DICOM came about, how dentistry is involved, the various elements that are part of the DICOM system, and how DICOM is currently used in dentistry.

Hexagon-shaped Zn oxide nano-pole films with terraces and steps have been successfully fabricated by means of a combined approach involving sol-gel process, high-temperature heat treatment, and the hydrothermal method. The surface chemistry and morphological features of the films were characterized by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microcopy. All the diffraction peaks in x-ray diffraction pattern match with those of the hexagonal wurtzite phase of Zn oxide. Transmittance measurements show that the optical transmittance of the sample synthesized at 520°C on quartz glass substrate is the highest, reaching about 65% in the visible-light region. Based on the detailed structural characterization and the nucleation-growth kinetics, we find that the whole crystallization process of wurtzite Zn oxide nano-poles includes nanocatalysis and layer-by-layer growth mechanism. The present study provides an important understanding of the growth mechanism for nano-pole synthesis of Zn oxide and related materials.

AbstractFacial flap surgery depends strongly on thorough preoperative planning and precise surgical performance. To increase the dimensional accuracy of transferred facial flaps, the methods of ultrasound and three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning offer great possibilities. This study aimed to compare different methods of measuring distances in the facial region and where they can be used reliably. The study population consisted of 20 volunteers (10 males and 10 females) with a mean age of 26.7 ± 7.2 years and a mean body mass index of 22.6 ± 2.2 kg/m2. Adhesives with a standardized length of 20 mm were measured in various facial regions through ultrasound and 3D surface scans, and the results were compared. Regardless of the facial region, the mean length measured through ultrasound was 18.83 mm, whereas it was 19.89 mm for 3D surface scans, with both p < 0.0001. Thus, the mean difference was 1.17 mm for ultrasound measurements and 0.11 mm for 3D surface scans. Curved facial regions show a great complexity when it comes to measuring distances due to the concavity and convexity of the face. Distance measurements through 3D surface scanning showed more accurate distances than the ultrasound measurement. Especially in “complex” facial regions (e.g., glabella region and labiomental sulcus), the 3D surface scanning showed clear advantages.

The aim of this study was to compare parameters of nanocellulose obtained by two different procedures: hydrolysis with ionic liquids (1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate) and hydrolysis with ionic liquids in combination with hydrolysis using a cellulolytic enzyme from Trichoderma reesei. Avicel cellulose was treated with two ionic liquids: 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) and 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimOAc). In the two-step hydrolysis cellulose after treatment with ionic liquids was additionally hydrolyzed with a solution of enzymes. In order to characterize the obtained material, the following analyses were used: infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and dynamic light scattering. The results indicated that cellulose obtained by two-step nanocellulose production methods (first hydrolysis with ionic liquids and then with enzymes) showed similar parameters (particle size, XRD patterns and degree of crystallinity) as the material after the one-step process, i.e. hydrolysis with ionic liquids.

Direct plasma enhanced-atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is adopted for the growth of ZnO on c-Si with native oxide at room temperature. The initial stages of growth both in terms of thickness evolution and crystallization onset are followed ex-situ by a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray based techniques (diffraction, reflectivity, and fluorescence). Differently from the growth mode usually reported for thermal ALD ZnO (i.e., substrate-inhibited island growth), the effect of plasma surface activation resulted in a substrate-enhanced island growth. A transient region of accelerated island formation was found within the first 2 nm of deposition, resulting in the growth of amorphous ZnO as witnessed with grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. After the islands coalesced and a continuous layer formed, the first crystallites were found to grow, starting the layer-by-layer growth mode. High-temperature ALD ZnO layers were also investigated in terms of crystallization onset, showing that layers are amorphous up to a thickness of 3 nm, irrespective of the deposition temperature and growth orientation.

A 4-year-old child had closure of tracheocutaneous fistula under general anaesthesia. He developed extensive surgical emphysema over the face, chest, and upper abdomen immediately in the recovery room. We gave him oxygen supplementation, removed surgical stitch, and inserted a 4 mm tracheostomy tube to secure airway. Chest X-ray ruled out pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum. After a week, a tight bandage was applied which approximated the tissue and helped in the closure of stoma; no suture was applied. The patient was discharged home on the fourth postoperative day. The patient needs close observation in the postoperative period with likely complication in mind. Recognizing early signs and symptoms of respiratory distress with quick intervention is lifesaving during the complication of tracheocutaneous fistula surgery. In absence of pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum, extensive surgical emphysema occurring during primary closure of tracheocutaneous fistula can be treated without inserting any drainage tube.

Web-core sandwich panels are a typical lightweight structure utilized in a variety of fields, such as naval, aviation, aerospace, etc. Welding is considered as an effective process to join the face panel to the core panel from the face panel side. However, it is difficult to locate the joint position (i.e., the position of core panel) due to the shielding of the face panel. This paper studies a weld position detection method based on X-ray from the face panel side for aluminum web-core sandwich panels used in aviation and naval structures. First, an experimental system was designed for weld position detection, able to quickly acquire the X-ray intensity signal backscattered by the specimen. An effective signal processing method was developed to accurately extract the characteristic value of X-ray intensity signals representing the center of the joint. Secondly, an analytical model was established to calculate and optimize the detection parameters required for detection of the weld position of a given specimen by analyzing the relationship between the backscattered X-ray intensity signal detected by the detector and the parameters of the detection system and specimen during the detection process. Finally, several experiments were carried out on a 6061 aluminum alloy specimen with a thickness of 3 mm. The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum absolute error of the detection was 0.340 mm, which is sufficiently accurate for locating the position of the joint. This paper aims to provide the technical basis for the automatic tracking of weld joints from the face panel side, required for the high-reliability manufacturing of curved sandwich structures.

We demonstrate a simple method for fabricating multilayer thin films containing ferrite (Co0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) nanoparticles, using layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. These films have microwave absorbing properties for possible radar absorbing and stealth applications. To demonstrate incorporation of inorganic ferrite nanoparticles into an electrostatic-interaction-based LbL self-assembly, we fabricated two types of films: (1) a blended three-component LbL film consisting of a sequential poly(acrylic acid)/oleic acid-ferrite blend layer and a poly(allylamine hydrochloride) layer and (2) a tetralayer LbL film consisting of sequential poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), poly(sodium-4-sulfonate), bPEI-ferrite, and poly(sodium-4-sulfonate) layers. We compared surface morphologies, thicknesses, and packing density of the two types of ferrite multilayer film. Ferrite nanoparticles (Co0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) were prepared via a coprecipitation method from an aqueous precursor solution. The structure and composition of the ferrite nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction patterns of ferrite nanoparticles indicated a cubic spinel structure, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed their composition. Thickness growth and surface morphology were measured using a profilometer, atomic force microscope, and scanning electron microscope.
