Investigating the vibrational behaviour of a rotating two-blade propeller by using a self-tracking method

This study investigated the vibrational behaviour of a rotating two-blade propeller at different rotational speeds by using self-tracking laser Doppler vibrometry. Given that a self-tracking method necessitates the accurate adjustment of test setups to reduce measurement errors, a test table with sufficient rigidity was designed and built to enable the adjustment and repair of test components. The results of the self-tracking test on the rotating propeller indicated an increase in natural frequency and a decrease in the amplitude of normalized mode shapes as rotational speed increases. To assess the test results, a numerical model created in ABAQUS was used. The model parameters were tuned in such a way that the natural frequency and associated mode shapes were in good agreement with those derived using a hammer test on a stationary propeller. The mode shapes obtained from the hammer test and the numerical (ABAQUS) modelling were compared using the modal assurance criterion. The examination indicated a strong resemblance between the hammer test results and the numerical findings. Hence, the model can be employed to determine the other mechanical properties of two-blade propellers in test scenarios.

Similitude laws can be used to extrapolate the vibration characteristic of a small, inexpensive, and easily tested model into structural behavior for the full-size prototype. In this article, a systematic similitude approach is proposed to predict the natural frequency, mode shape, and vibration response of composite laminated plates. The emphasis of this article is to predict the vibration characteristic of composite laminated plates in an effective and convenient way. Sensitivity analysis (SA) is introduced to improve the prediction accuracy of natural frequency. For distortion similarity, the prediction accuracy is improved close to 5%. Modal assurance criterion (MAC) measures the consistency of mode shapes of the full-size prototype and scaled models. The influence of stacking sequence on mode consistency is investigated. Similitude based on virtual mode and statistical energy (SVMSE) is proposed to extrapolate the transient response of the prototype to simulate the shock environment, such as satellite–rocket separation, etc. In conclusion, the prediction accuracy of natural frequency, mode consistency, and response coincidence are considered comprehensively to extrapolate the vibration characteristic of the full-size laminated plates.

The nonlinear flexural vibrations of thin circular rings are analyzed by assuming two vibration modes and then applying Galerkin’s procedure on the equations of motion. The results show that vibrations involving either a single bending mode or two coupled bending modes can occur. Theory and experiment both indicate a nonlinearity of the softening type and the existence of these coupled-mode vibrations. Test results for the steady-state response are in good agreement with the calculated values, and the deflection modes used in the analysis agree with the experimental mode shapes. The analytical and experimental results exhibit several features that are characteristic of nonliner vibrations of axisymmetric systems in general and of circular cylindrial shells in particular.

Abstract A full scale experimental beam expander structure is modeled and correlated with modal test results on a component and system level. Correlation of the FE models is completed using the LINK module of the Leuven Measurement Systems (LMS) software which is also used to acquire and reduce the modal test data. The correlation tools used to measure the agreement between test and analytic mode shapes are the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (CoMAC), and mass cross-orthogonality. In addition to the tools used to measure agreement between test and analysis modal parameters, sensitivity and optimization algorithms are used to identity structural parameters which influence a particular mode and what the minimum change(s) must be in the parameter(s) to bring about the desired agreement. As part of a system level pre-test analysis, the theoretical mode shapes along with a normalized line-of-sight error associated with each mode are used to select the best measurement and excitation locations.

Abstract Natural frequencies and vibrating motions are determined in terms of the material and geometric properties of a radial tire modeled as a thin ring on an elastic foundation. Experimental checks of resonant frequencies show good agreement. Forced vibration solutions obtained are shown to consist of a superposition of resonant vibrations, each rotating around the tire at a rate depending on the mode number and the tire rotational speed. Theoretical rolling speeds that are upper bounds at which standing waves occur are determined and checked experimentally. Digital Fourier transform, transfer function, and modal analysis techniques used to determine the resonant mode shapes of a radial tire reveal that antiresonances are the primary transmitters of vibration to the tire axle.

ABSTRACT The tire model is essential for accurate and efficient vehicle dynamic simulation. In this article, an in-plane flexible ring tire model is proposed, in which the tire is composed of a rigid rim, a number of discretized lumped mass belt points, and numerous massless tread blocks attached on the belt. One set of tire model parameters is identified by approaching the predicted results with ADAMS® FTire virtual test results for one particular cleat test through the particle swarm method using MATLAB®. Based on the identified parameters, the tire model is further validated by comparing the predicted results with FTire for the static load-deflection tests and other cleat tests. Finally, several important aspects regarding the proposed model are discussed.

Rotating systems components such as rotors, have dynamic characteristics that are of great importance to understand because they may cause failure of turbomachinery. Therefore, it is required to study a dynamic model to predict some vibration characteristics, in this case, the natural frequencies and mode shapes (both of free vibration) of a centrifugal compressor shaft. The peculiarity of the dynamic model proposed is that using frequency and displacements values obtained experimentally, it is possible to calculate the mass and stiffness distribution of the shaft, and then use these values to estimate the theoretical modal parameters. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shaft were obtained with experimental modal analysis by using the impact test. The results predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental test. The model is also flexible with other geometries and has a great time and computing performance, which can be evaluated with respect to other commercial software in the future.

In this study, the effect of crack on free vibration of a large deflected cantilever plate, which forms the case of a pre-stressed curved plate, is investigated. A distributed load is applied at the free edge of a thin cantilever plate. Then, the loading edge of the deflected plate is fixed to obtain a pre-stressed curved plate. The large deflection equation provides the non - linear deflection curve of the large deflected flexible plate. The thin curved plate is modeled by using the finite element method with a four-node quadrilateral element. Three different aspect ratios are used to examine the effect of crack. The effect of crack and its location on the natural frequency parameter is given in tables and graphs. Also, the natural frequency parameters of the present model are compared with the finite element software results to verify the reliability and validity of the present model. This study shows that the different mode shapes are occurred due to the change of load parameter, and these different mode shapes cause a change in the effect of crack.

Abstract Introduction During the current COVID-19 pandemic video consultations are increasingly common in order to minimize the risk of infection for staff and patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a spine examination via video. Methods A total of 43 patients were recruited. Each participant underwent a video-based (VB) and a conventional face-to-face (FTF) spine examination. Pain intensity, active range of motion, inspection, a neurophysiologic basic exam and provocations tests were evaluated using video-based and face-to-face methods. Results The intra-rater reliability (IRR) was measured between both examinations. Good to very good IRR values were obtained in inspection (Kappa between 0,752 und 0,944), active range of motion and basic neurophysiological examination (Kappa between 0,659 und 0,969). Only moderate matches were found in specific provocation tests (Kappa between 0,407 und 0,938). A video-based spine examination is a reliable tool for measuring pain intensity, active range of motion and a basic neurophysiologic exam. Conclusion A basic spine examination during a video consultation is possible. A good agreement of the test results between video-based and face-to-face examination could be found.

The combined brake system (CBS) is a mechanism that links the front and rear brakes for scooters. For two-wheeled scooters, a CBS with appropriate braking force distribution can reduce the risk of crashing accidents due to insufficient driving proficiency. The design of the braking force distribution for a CBS is challenging to the designer because it has to fulfill many requirements such as braking performance, ride comfort, reliability, and low costs. This paper proposes a systematic method to optimize the parameters of CBS. The evaluation indexes for the design are first discussed. The steps to determine the critical parameter to meet the indexes and a method to predict braking performance are developed. Finally, driving tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results showed that the deceleration of the tested scooter equipped with the designed CBS achieves an average mean fully developed deceleration (MFDD) of 5.246 m/s2, higher than the homologation requirement. Furthermore, the proposed method’s prediction of braking performance is in good agreement with the test results, with errors <1%.

AbstractIt is common to formulate the history-matching problem using Bayes’ theorem. From Bayes’, the conditional probability density function (pdf) of the uncertain model parameters is proportional to the prior pdf of the model parameters, multiplied by the likelihood of the measurements. The static model parameters are random variables characterizing the reservoir model while the observations include, e.g., historical rates of oil, gas, and water produced from the wells. The reservoir prediction model is assumed perfect, and there are no errors besides those in the static parameters. However, this formulation is flawed. The historical rate data only approximately represent the real production of the reservoir and contain errors. History-matching methods usually take these errors into account in the conditioning but neglect them when forcing the simulation model by the observed rates during the historical integration. Thus, the model prediction depends on some of the same data used in the conditioning. The paper presents a formulation of Bayes’ theorem that considers the data dependency of the simulation model. In the new formulation, one must update both the poorly known model parameters and the rate-data errors. The result is an improved posterior ensemble of prediction models that better cover the observations with more substantial and realistic uncertainty. The implementation accounts correctly for correlated measurement errors and demonstrates the critical role of these correlations in reducing the update’s magnitude. The paper also shows the consistency of the subspace inversion scheme by Evensen (Ocean Dyn. 54, 539–560 2004) in the case with correlated measurement errors and demonstrates its accuracy when using a “larger” ensemble of perturbations to represent the measurement error covariance matrix.
