Abstract Background To examine the characteristics of rhegmatous retinal detachment (RRD) associated with atopic dermatitis. Method Medical records of 2257 patients who underwent RD surgery at this clinic between 2008 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Among them, 61 patients who were diagnosed as AD were assigned into the experimental group and 100 patients who did not have AD were randomly selected and assigned into the control group. Demographics, characteristics of detachment, initial operative method, and prognosis after surgery were investigated as main outcomes. Additionally, in pseudophakic RD patients, the period between the cataract surgery and onset of RD was measured. Result Postoperative VA and prognosis were significantly worse and bilateral involvement of RD was more common in the atopy group than in the control group. (P value = 0.005, 0.001 each) Characteristics of retinal breaks were different between the two groups. Additionally, the risk of developing RD within 1 year after cataract surgery was significantly higher in pseudophakic patients of the atopic group than in the control group. (P value = 0.013) However, there was no significant difference in mean preoperative VA or refractive index between the two groups. Conclusion Our results show that in atopic patients, RD occurs at a young age with different characteristics compared to non-atopic patients. Atopic RD has a poor visual prognosis. Thus, it requires careful management. Furthermore, the risk of developing RD within 1 year after cataract surgery is higher in atopic patients. Therefore, it is important to perform regular and extensive check-up after cataract surgery for atopic patients.

Abstract Purpose: To examine the characteristics of rhegmatous retinal detachment(RRD) associated with atopic dermatitis.Study design: retrospective case-control studyMethodThe study was conducted between 2008 and 2018, whereby 2257 patients underwent RD surgery at this clinic. Among them, 61 patients who have been diagnosed as atopy were treated as experimental group, and 100 patients who didn’t have atopy were randomly selected as control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: In this study, demographics, characteristics of detachment, initial operative method, and prognosis after surgery were investigated. Additionally, in pseudophakic RD patients, the period between the cataract surgery and onset of RD was measured.Result: In atopy group, postoperative VA and prognosis were significantly worse and bilateral involvement of RD was more common than control group. However, it is notable that there was no difference of mean preoperative VA and refractive index between two groups. There was a difference in characteristics of retinal breaks in two groups. Additionally, it was noted that in pseudophakic patients, the risk of developing RD within 1 year after cataract surgery was significantly higher in atopic group than in control group. Conclusion: Generally speaking, RD in atopy occurs at a young age and has different characteristics noted than with non-atopic patients. In this context, atopic RD has poor visual prognosis, and for this reason it requires careful management. Furthermore, the risk of developing RD within 1 year after cataract surgery is higher in atopy, and thus we suggest regular and extensive check-up after cataract surgery especially in atopic patients.

Physics was perceived as a difficult subject with in dire need for cooperative learning and problem-solving skills rubric modified from Jennifer Docktor, namely, useful description, physics approach, the specific application of physics, mathematical procedures, and logical progression. This study aimed to determine and describe the effectiveness of jigsaw technique in physics learning and problem-solving skills which employed pretest-posttest and quasi-experimental research design with a 95% confidence level. There were two groups included in the study as control and the experimental group which received jigsaw technique and traditional teaching respectively as treatment. Independent samples t-test results showed the use of jigsaw technique as cooperative learning has a statistical difference on the post-test and post-rubric scores against the control group with the large effect size in which the students showed a proficient performance in learning physics and problem-solving skills with the common use of useful description and physics approach. There is no significant difference on the pre-test and pre-rubric scores between the control and experimental group with the p-value of 0.772 and 0.019. Moreover, this study revealed that the experimental group struggled with mathematical procedures and logical progression posting low percentage gain. Overall this study concludes that students’ exposure to jigsaw technique improved physics learning.

Background: Students’ decline in empathy during medical school raises concerns. Empathic physician-patient interactions positively impact health outcomes and patient satisfaction, while improving job satisfaction and reducing physician burnout. Reflection rounds may be suitable for maintaining student empathy during training. Hypothesis: Our hypothesis was Reflection Rounds would increase empathy scores of MS3s and results would vary by gender. Methods: MS3s completed the Jefferson Scale of Empathy upon starting and finishing their clerkship. Students in the experimental group attended four 1-hour sessions, led by a clinician and pastoral team member. The control group did not attend sessions. Results: No significant difference in baseline empathy scores was found between the two groups. There was a significant increase in student empathy scores among the experimental group, improving mean score from 114.1 to 116.5, p-value of 0.04. There were no significant changes among the students who did not participate in Reflection Rounds. Differences were found according to gender, with women scoring higher overall than men at baseline and increasing after sessions. Conclusion: These results indicate that Reflection Rounds can improve the empathy of medical students, and warrant further investigation into their effects and utility within medical education.
