Semiotics of mediation is based on comparative analysis of mediation processes, on typology of forms of mediation and on the subsequent complementary analysis of culture. Not only does cultural analysis that is based on semiotics of mediation proceed from communication processes, it also searches for possibilities of correlation between concepts of describability, analysability, translatability. Depending on the strategy of mediation semiotics it is possible to create an overview of the main parameters of cultural analysis and to specify the boundaries of semiotic analysis of culture. The main types of mediation are simultaneously parameters of cultural analysis. The main types include autocommunicative mediation, metalingual mediation, intertextual mediation, interdiscursive mediation, and inter- or transmedial mediation. Typology of mediation types facilitates the understanding of the autocommunicative aspect of culture and creates the basis for analysing communication processes not on the level of the immediate sender and receiver but as part of the culture’s communication with itself. Semiotics of mediation starts from semiotic mediation and ends with a culture of mediation in which one and the same cultural language or text operates as a means of dialogue with itself, as a means of communication with others, as part of some textual system or discourse, or as a transmedial phenomenon. Semiotics of mediation is a means of studying the correlation between implicit semiotic mediation and forms of explicit semiotic mediation, thus complementing cultural semiotic study of culture.

This article investigates direct quotations in a corpus of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports in Italian, Chinese, and English. The corpus is composed of 60 CSR reports published by Italian, Chinese, and American companies in the banking and energy sector. The study aims at exploring what types of textual voices are involved in the discourse of CSR reporting and how different sources of voices are represented, using the framework of social actor representation proposed by Van Leeuwen. The results show that the voices presented in direct quotations are often “orchestrated” by companies into “symphony” rather than “polyphony.” Most of the sources of direct quotations are represented as individuals with specified names. The comparative analysis shows that companies from different cultural backgrounds present different preferences in selecting and representing the various sources. The Italian and American CSR reports present more voices from managers, while the Chinese CSR reports show a clearer preference for voices from employees and clients.

The purpose of the article is the formation of a base for fashion research in Ukrainian culturological science. Carrying out a culturological analysis of gender transformations in the evolution of fashion and fashion trends. The methodology of the research is due to the need of using specific culturological methods for the analysis – diachronic and synchronous methods, comparative-historical method, semiotic method. The scientific novelty of the article includes conducting a cultural analysis of the phenomenon of fashion and gender; conducting a semiotic analysis of the fashion industry; identifying the features of the functioning of fashion in the context of the symbolic space of culture. Conclusions. In postmodernism, fashion begins its transformation from a symbolic unit that provides information about certain means to the means of communication that help people realize their own human potential, encourage freedom of choice, self-identification, and self-expression, which is reflected in the gradual leveling of gender and other sociocultural clothes. Modern fashion is beginning to blur the boundaries between social status, gender and age. After all, the transformational processes taking place in society are directly related to the transformation of culture and changes in fashion, because fashion is one of the structural elements of culture.

Abstract Given the evolving multimodal features in educational settings, modes other than language further enable the diversity in the realization of meanings and pedagogic goals. This paper explores modality in multimodal pedagogic materials for teaching English as a foreign language in China. Drawing upon the social semiotic approach to modality in visual media, this study provides a comparative analysis of modality markers in different elemental genres that constitute the macrogenre of a teaching unit, with a focus on explaining the underlying reasons for the different choices in terms of coding orientation. It is shown that different degrees of deviation from the accepted coding orientation are employed in different constituent genres of the macrogenre of a given text.

This article is dedicated to examination of the phenomenon of contemporary Chinese art, its essential specificity within the framework of tradition and in the conditions of globalization. For achieving the set goal, the author applies the method of historical-cultural analysis in combination with the elements of structural-semiotic analysis of contemporary art in China of the late XX century. For historical and social reasons, contemporary art became a substantial part of the works of Chinese artists only after the “Reform and Opening-Up” in the 1980s. China was able to preserve tremendous artistic heritage, thus the contemporary art resembles a fusion of the tradition and postmodernism. The scientific novelty of this work consists in shifting away from art discourse in studying artistic material and concentrating on philosophical perspective. The conclusion is drawn that since the 1980s until the present China undergoes a drastic period of transformation of art from traditional to contemporary. The works of that time reflect such themes as the alienation of a modern person from tradition, change in experience of world perception, conflict between modern politics and society.

The article discusses the semantics of the image of an eagle in the drama “Toyon Kyyl” (The Lord Eagle) by a Sakha director Eduard Novikov. The research is based on various methods, including linguo-cultural analysis, structural semiotic analysis, and interpretative methods of analysis. Eagle is one of the oldest symbols used by various peoples of the world. The Sakha called eagle toyon kyyl (lord of birds) or toyon bulur (lord who brings misfortune). In modern context the image of the eagle represents nature, while the relationship between the eagle and the characters represent the relationship between people and nature. Humanity, just like that young boy Mikiper who scared away the eagle in his childhood, is destroying the natural world. However, the punishment for this act is waiting in the future. The article discusses the main symbols of the film, connected with the image of an eagle: the Sun, a tree, an egg. The Sun (mark of the Upper World) is connected with divine punishment and divine eye. An egg, floating in the world ocean, contained the Universe inside of it, according to myths of the peoples of the world. In the analysed film the eggs symbolise children, offspring, and thus the future. A special role in the film is given to an old tengke tit larch tree, which symbolises the world tree, while the eagle on its top is the mark of the Upper World.

Mobile communication applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, are already present in educational contexts, although their use is generally restricted to the original purpose of informal communication. In this paper, we investigate their potential to promote interaction in formal communication processes, exploring the meaning evolution of WhatsApp use in an undergraduate class setting. Based on an Organizational Semiotic analysis, we proposed a system to enable students to perform preparatory pre-class activities with WhatsApp exchanging commands, text and multimedia messages. Our analysis of the system use suggests that it is feasible and effective to appropriate mobile communication applications which students are already familiar with and use them in formal educational contexts.

Authenticity is a prominent concept in current political discourse. Its popularity in political communication has also inspired a growing but still fragmented body of research in communication science. Since this field lacks an integrative conceptualization, this article aims to clarify political authenticity for academic discourse and as a research object for communication science. The article provides a narrative review of research on authenticity in political communication and proposes an understanding of political authenticity as a social construction which is created and negotiated in complex communication processes among politicians, the media, and the audience. I propose performed, mediated, and perceived political authenticity as three analytic perspectives to deconstruct these complex processes and to link political authenticity with media and communication literature. Finally, I derive four dimensions of political authenticity (consistency, intimacy, ordinariness, and immediacy) and corresponding indicators that will help to operationalize it as a strategy by politicians, a product from mediation processes, and as an audience perception.
