Evidence for the real impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on preterm birth is unclear, as available series report composite pregnancy outcomes and/or do not stratify patients according to disease severity. The purpose of the research was to determine the real impact of asymptomatic/mild SARS-CoV-2 infection on preterm birth not due to maternal respiratory failure. This case-control study involved women admitted to Sant Anna Hospital, Turin, for delivery between 20 September 2020 and 9 January 2021. The cumulative incidence of Coronavirus disease-19 was compared between preterm birth (case group, n = 102) and full-term delivery (control group, n = 127). Only women with spontaneous or medically-indicated preterm birth because of placental vascular malperfusion (pregnancy-related hypertension and its complications) were included. Current or past SARS-CoV-2 infection was determined by nasopharyngeal swab testing and detection of IgM/IgG antibodies in blood samples. A significant difference in the cumulative incidence of Coronavirus disease-19 between the case (21/102, 20.5%) and the control group (32/127, 25.1%) (P= 0.50) was not observed, although the case group was burdened by a higher prevalence of three known risk factors (body mass index > 24.9, asthma, chronic hypertension) for severe Coronavirus disease-19. Logistic regression analysis showed that asymptomatic/mild SARS-CoV-2 infection was not an independent predictor of spontaneous and medically-indicated preterm birth due to pregnancy-related hypertension and its complications (0.77; 95% confidence interval, 0.41-1.43). Pregnant patients without comorbidities need to be reassured that asymptomatic/mild SARS-CoV-2 infection does not increase the risk of preterm delivery. Preterm birth and severe Coronavirus disease-19 share common risk factors (i.e., body mass index > 24.9, asthma, chronic hypertension), which may explain the high rate of indicated preterm birth due to maternal conditions reported in the literature.

Aim. To determine clinical features and some mechanisms of osteosarcopenia development in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). Materials and methods. A casecontrol study was conducted on the basis of the Saratov State Clinical Hospital 5 in 20152018 of patients with CP. In a study of 161 patients with CP included, the control group 30 healthy individuals. Patients were divided into groups according to the etiology of CP: 79 with toxic-metabolic CP, 82 with biliary CP. To determine the risks of low-energy fractures, 154 patients were tested with the Fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX). Along with the standard examination, 30 patients with CP dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was performed. To assess the state of skeletal muscles, body mass index was determined, hand-held dynamometry was performed, and a set of Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) tests was used. Along with the assessment of traditional risk factors for osteosarcopenia gender, age, state of reproductive function in women, body mass index, functional state of the pancreas (pancreas) the quantitative content of interleukins (IL)-2, 6, 8 in in colonic biopsies was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results. Bone disorders, according to densitometry, was detected in 70.0% of patients with CP, in 13.3% of the control group. Presarcopenia was detected in 62 (38.5%) patients with CP, sarcopenia in 34 (21.1%), in the control group presarcopenia and sarcopenia were not detected. Sarcopenia was statistically significantly more common in toxic-metabolic CP than in biliary CP (2=11.6; p0.001). Correlations of the lumbar spine T-score and IL-6 (r=-0.29; p=0.03), IL-8 (r=-0.29; p=0.04) were revealed. Correlations between sarcopenia and the concentration of cytokines in the in the colon mucosa in CP were determined (IL-2: r=0.44; p0.001; IL-6: r=0.48; p0.001; IL-8: r=0.42; p0.001). Conclusion. The development of osteopenia and sarcopenia syndromes in CP is interrelated and associated with both traditional risk factors and an increased concentration of cytokines in the in the colon mucosa.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease related to joint cartilage and commonly occurs in the knee joint. The 2013 National Survey recorded the prevalence of joint diseases in East Java was 26.9%. OA affected more women than men due to the estrogen and caused disabilities in many women. This study aimed to find the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), age of menarche, parity, and the use of hormonal contraceptives against OA in genu at Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya. This was an analytic observational study with a case-control approach. Data collection was carried out through a short interview using a questionnaire. The sample size was calculated using a formula and found that the study required 42 patients with OA in the case group and 42 patients without OA in the control group. The case group was dominated by patients with 56-60 years old age (62.1%), BMI 23-24.9 kg/m2 (58.7%), menarche age 12-13 years (53.6%), multiparous (52.6%), having contraception pill usage history (62.3%) particularly using combination pills (60.5%) with a mean duration of use > 1 year (56.8%). There was a relationship between BMI and type of hormonal contraceptive used against genu OA in female patients at Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya.

Abstract Background Exposures to human immunodeficiency (HIV) and antiretroviral therapy in utero may have adverse effects on infant growth. Among children born in Denmark and aged 0–5 years, we aimed to compare anthropometric outcomes in HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) children with those in children not exposed to HIV. Methods In a nationwide register-based study we included all singleton HEU children born in Denmark in 2000–2016. HEU children were individually matched by child sex, parity, and maternal place of birth to 5 singleton controls born to mothers without HIV. Weight-for-age z (WAZ) scores, length-for-age z (LAZ) scores, and weight-for-length or body mass index–for–age z scores were generated according to the World Health Organization standards and the Fenton growth chart for premature infants. Differences in mean z scores were analyzed using linear mixed models, both univariate and adjusted for social and maternal factors. Results In total, 485 HEU children and 2495 HIV-unexposed controls were included. Compared with controls, HEU children were smaller at birth, with an adjusted difference in mean WAZ and LAZ scores of −0.29 (95% confidence interval [CI], −.46 to −.12) and −0.51 (95% CI, −.71 to −.31), respectively (both P ≤ .001). Over time, there was a trend toward increasing WAZ and LAZ scores in HEU children, and there was no significant difference in adjusted WAZ scores after age 14 days (−0.13 [95% CI, −.27 to .01]; P = .07) and LAZ scores after age 6 months (−0.15 [95% CI, −.32 to .02]; P = .08). Conclusion Compared with a matched control group, HEU children were smaller at birth, but this difference decreased with time and is not considered to have a negative effect on the health and well-being of HEU children during early childhood.

This research was designed to evaluate the effect of cardiovascular exercises on body mass index (BMI) and vital capacity (VC) among student aged between 21-27 years (M � SD 22.3� 3.05). The experimental research study was applied to 54 University students of Sargodha. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 24.0. P-value ? 0.05 was considered significant. The result showed that the average BMI of the control group and experimental groups was 20.73�3.02 vs 21.51�3.21. The effectiveness of cardiovascular exercise on Vital capacity on Pre and post-test of the experimental group was -56.91272 � 22.03192 with a pvalue of 0.000, which was showed there was a highly significant improvement in vital capacity of students and compare with the control group. It was concluded that body masses index and vital capacity is significantly improved in university students of the experimental group as a result of 10 weeks of the cardiovascular exercise training program. Conclude that there is a significant difference between the effects of cardiovascular exercise and daily routine sports activities on BMI.

Objective – to analyze the association of risk factors with the 1666 A>C polymorphism of the AGTR1 gene in patients with essential hypertension.Material and methods. 100 patients were screened, 72 of whom were genotyped. The control group consisted of 48 healthy individuals who did not differ in gender and age, and with the group of patients.Results. The obtained data confirmed that the level of blood pressure elevation is associated, to some extent, with modified (diabetes mellitus 2, smoking, body mass index) and unmodified factors (family history, gender) the risk of essential hypertension. The results of the analysis of blood pressure levels considering the A1166C polymorphism of the AGTR1 gene showed that the values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the group of patients with C-allele carriers were higher than in carriers of AA genotype: SBP – by 5.38% (p<0.05), DBP – by 5.15% (p<0.05). Conclusions. The level of blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension depends on body mass index and smoking. In carriers of the C-allele of the AGTR1 gene (A1166C), the level of systolic and diastolic blood pressure exceeds the ones of the carriers of the AA genotype. The presence of the C-allele of the AGTR1 gene (A1166C) almost doubles the risk of severe essential hypertension [OR = 2.75; p = 0.037].

Both migraine and obesity are prevalent disorders in the general population, which are characterized by disability and impaired quality of life. Although so many researches had studied the association between migraine and obesity, there are still no full knowledge of the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and migraine, especially chronic migraine (CM). In this study, we analyzed a previous epidemiological survey data of primary headache patients in Chongqing, which surveyed consecutive neurological outpatients through face-to-face interview with physicians using a headache questionnaire. 166 episodic migraine (EM) patients and 134 chronic migraine (CM) patients were included in the study out of 1327 primary headache patients. And 200 healthy adults from the physical examination center were included as a control group. Finally, we found that the patients with migraine (EM and CM) were more likely to be overweight, obese, or morbidly obese compared to those in the healthy group. Significant difference was found between BMI and frequency of migraine attacks but not severity or duration of headache onset. And no significant difference was found in severity and duration of headache onset between episodic and chronic migraine among different BMI classifications. Such may update our knowledge about the clinical features of migraine and BMI, revealing that the frequency of attacks may be associated with being overweight, obese, or morbidly obese in patients with migraine and that the extent of being overweight, obese, or morbidly obese in CM patients was lower than that in EM patients.

Abstract Background Preterm birth (PTB; gestational age < 37 weeks) is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) have been previously cited as risk factors for PTB, however the magnitude of association varies across populations. No studies have examined low and excessive GWG as modifiable risk factors for PTB in Puerto Rico, an area with inexplicably high PTB rates. Methods To examine the relationship between GWG and PTB, we conducted a retrospective analysis using birth certificate data files from the Puerto Rico Department of Health from 2005 to 2012. GWG was standardized to a 40-week gestational duration and was categorized into low, adequate, or excessive for each category of pre-pregnancy body mass index using American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines. Logistic regression was used to determine the crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between GWG and PTB. Results There were 320,695 births included in this analysis; 40.6% with high GWG and 27.3% with low GWG. A greater percentage of women with low GWG were less than 20 years of age, had less than a high school education, and were underweight compared to women with adequate and excessive GWG. Women with low compared to adequate GWG had increased odds of PTB (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.30–1.37). However, excessive compared to adequate GWG was not associated with PTB (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.97–1.02). Conclusions Among women in Puerto Rico, low GWG was associated with increased odds of PTB. With the exception of obesity, these associations persisted within all strata of pre-pregnancy body mass index, highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy. Future research should examine other factors that may contribute to GWG, such as dietary nutrients, and explore pathways through which GWG may be contributing to PTB.

Objective: To evaluate the use of mouthwashes in patients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer. Materials and methods: Fifty-three patients were interviewed through a specific questionnaire at two reference centers for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Case Group consisted of 33 patients with final diagnosis of epidermoid carcinoma of the mouth and oropharynx. The Control Group consisted of 20 patients attended to by services not connected with oncology. Results: In the Case Group, 81.8% did not make use of dental floss, showing statistically significant difference from the Control Group (p=0.036). As for toothbrushing, we noticed a contrary behavior in which the Cases brushed more times per day than the Controls. The Control Group made less use of mouthwashes when compared to the Case Group, which used it more times per day (p=0.028). Patients in the Case Group smoked more than those in the Control Group, with this difference being significant (p=0.004). The same behavior was observed for alcohol consumption – consumption in milliliters per day during the year (p=0.031). Relevance: Various risk factors have been associated with cancers of the oral cavity, among them the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The mechanism by which alcoholic beverages cause oral cancer is unknown, but probably involves topical exposure. Conclusion: From this study, we concluded that even with the small casuistic, by means of a stratified analysis, the use of mouthwashes was four times higher in alcohol consumers; however, no increase of risk in smokers, abstainers from alcohol and non-smokers was observed.

Amaranthus dubius,Vigna unguiculata,andCucurbita pepoare traditionally used to manage obesity in Kenya but lack scientific validation to support their use. The aim of this study was to determine the antiobesity activity of methanolic leaf extracts of these plants in progesterone-induced obese mice. The activity of the methanolic leaf extracts was orally bioscreened in progesterone-induced obese mice at 200 mg/kg/bw and 400 mg/kg/bw. Body mass index was calculated once per week for four weeks and blood samples were obtained at the end of the experiment for lipid profile analysis. Antiobesity activities of the extracts were compared with the controls. Leaf extracts ofA. dubius,C. pepo,andV. unguiculata,at dose concentrations of 200 mg/kgbw and 400 mg/kgbw, showed significant effects on body mass index (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the three extracts on lipid parameter profiles (p>0.05). The present study showed high food intake in the negative control group as compared with normal control, positive control, and treatment groups. These extracts contained various phytochemicals such as saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and steroids and therefore validate use of aforementioned plants in the suppression of obesity and their use for management of obesity is recommended.

Background: Galectin-3 is a member of the family of soluble beta-galactoside binding lectins, which is involved in inflammation, cell differentiation, adhesion, proliferation, angiogenesis and cancer cell invasion. Increased galectin-3 levels in obese patients have been shown in previous studies. In our study; we aimed to investigate the galectin-3 levels in obese adolescents for the first time in the literature. Materials and methods: A total of 85 adolescent patients who were admitted to our pediatrics outpatient clinic between December 19th of 2018 and January 31st of 2019 were included in our study. Among those patients 52 were obese and 33 were normal-weighted. Adolescents having body mass index (BMI) 95% percentile and above according to their age and sex were defined as obese. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay kit was used for the measurement of galectin-3 in serum. Laboratory tests (Galectin-3, HbA1c, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR), sex, age and BMI were statistically compared between groups. Results: We found no statistically significant difference in terms of gender distribution rates, age, glucose or galectin-3 levels among obese adolescent and healthy control groups (p> 0.05). The BMI, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and insulin levels of the obese adolescent group were found to be significantly higher than the healthy control group (p <0.05). We found no statistically significant correlation between galectin-3 levels and other parameters in obese adolescent group (p> 0.05). Conclusion: In our study, we did not find any relationship between serum galectin-3 levels and obesity in adolescents. We believe that the effects of galectin-3 levels on obesity in adolescents should be more clearly explained by further investigations, which also measures other biomarkers of the mechanism of action.
