A meta-analytic perspective on school climate studies in Turkey: The impact of some demographic variables

The purpose of this study is to analyze teachers' perceptions of school climate by gender and branch and have an overall idea on this issue. Meta-analysis method was employed in this study. Master's theses and doctoral dissertations as well as academic articles published in peer-reviewed journals dwelling on teachers' views on school climate in Turkey were analysed through various databases. A total of 30 studies meeting the criteria for inclusion in the study were included. In the analysis of research data, a random effects model was used. Results indicate that gender has no significant influence on the dimensions of disengagement, directiveness, and supportiveness of school climate, but has a significant influence on the dimensions of restrictiveness and intimacy. Gender was seen to have a significant but low influence on restrictiveness in favour of male teachers and on intimacy on behalf of female teachers. According to the study results, branch does not have a significant influence on the dimensions of school climate except for disengagement. Branch was seen to have a significant but low impact on disengagement in favour of subject teachers. In this sense, it was concluded that superficial variables like gender and branch do not have any determining influence on teachers' perceptions of school climate. Therefore, it may be recommended for researchers to study more primary factors concerning school climate.

The paper has a two fold purpose - examine the impact of bar service operation practices (BSOP) on organizational performance (OP) and study the relationship between organizational performance and demographic variables. Based on a survey of 362 bar managers perceptions on the impact of bar service operation practices on organizational performance were assessed by 59 practices and 6 demographic variables. Bivariate test and ANOVA were employed to test the working hypothesis in the study. Results indicated that there is a positive relationship between the bar service operation practices and organizational performance. Further, the results indicate some practical and managerial implications to improve organizational overall performance.

Differences in bullying rates between schools could be explained by school efficacy. This study examined the relationships among teachers’ perceptions of principals’ practices, school climate, and school collective efficacy to prevent bullying. The sample comprises 403 Mexican elementary-school teachers; 35% were male, and 65% were female. The teaching experience ranged from 2 to 35 years ( M = 13.2 years, SD = 9.1). Teachers answered self-report measures. A latent variable structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used. SEM model indicated that principal’s bullying prevention was directly related to a positive school climate, but they did not influence teachers’ perceptions of school collective efficacy. Also, principals’ support for teachers’ antibullying practices positively affected school climate and school collective efficacy. Both principal involvement and support had an indirect relationship with school collective efficacy. Overall, findings suggest that the principal has a critical role in promoting teachers’ perceptions of school collective efficacy in bullying prevention.

BackgroundEarly palliative care together with standard haematological care for advanced patients is needed worldwide. Little is known about its effect. The aim of the review is to synthesise the evidence on the impact of early palliative care on haematologic cancer patients’ quality of life and resource use.Patients and methodsA systematic review was conducted. The search terms were early palliative care or simultaneous or integrated or concurrent care and haematological or oncohaematological patients. The following databases were searched: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINHAL and Scopus. Additional studies were identified through cross-checking the reference articles. Studies were in the English language, with no restriction for years. Two researchers independently reviewed the titles and abstracts, and one author assessed full articles for eligibility.ResultsA total of 296 studies titles were reviewed. Eight articles were included in the synthesis of the results, two controlled studies provided data on the comparative efficacy of PC interventions, and six one-arm studies were included. Since data pooling and meta-analysis were not possible, only a narrative synthesis of the study results was performed. The quality of the two included comparative studies was low overall. The quality of the six non-comparative studies was high overall, without the possibility of linking the observed results to the implemented interventions.ConclusionsStudies on early palliative care and patients with haematological cancer are scarce and have not been prospectively designed. More research on the specific population target, type and timing of palliative care intervention and standardisation of collected outcomes is required.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42020141322.

Abstract Background: The 2008 Great Recession significantly impacted economies and individuals globally, with potential impacts on food systems and dietary intake. We systematically reviewed evidence on the impact of the Great Recession on children’s and adults’ dietary intake globally and whether disadvantaged individuals were disproportionately affected.Methods: We searched seven databases and relevant grey literature through June 2020. Longitudinal quantitative studies with the 2008 recession as the exposure and any measure of dietary intake (energy intake, dietary quality and food/macronutrient consumption) as outcomes were eligible for inclusion. Eligibility was independently assessed by two reviewers. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale was used for quality assessment. We undertook a random effects meta-analysis for changes in energy intake. Harvest plots were used to display and summarise study results for other outcomes. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019135864).Results: Forty-one studies including 2.6 million people met our inclusion criteria and were heterogenous in both methods and results. Ten studies reported energy intake, 11 dietary quality, 34 food intake, and 15 macronutrient consumption. The Great Recession was associated with a mean reduction of 39.9 calories per adult equivalent per day (95% Confidence Interval: -119.9, 40.2) in the meta-analysis of seven studies. We found reductions in dietary quality and small decreases in fruit and vegetable intake. We also found reductions in intake of meat and fish, fast food, sugary products, and soft drinks alongside an increase in the consumption of eggs and legumes. Impacts on macronutrients were inconclusive. Of 17 studies examining inequalities, 14 found that the Great Recession was associated with greater reductions in dietary intake and quality among more disadvantaged individuals. Only 4 studies investigated children’s intakes. Conclusions: The 2008 recession was associated with poorer dietary quality and decreased fruit and vegetable consumption, especially for more disadvantaged individuals. Implementing effective policies to mitigate adverse nutritional changes during the COVID pandemic and other major economic shocks should be prioritised.

Abstract Echocardiography has become an indispensable tool for the study of heart performance, improving the monitoring of individuals with cardiac diseases. Diverse genetic factors associated with echocardiographic measures have been previously reported. The impact of several apoptotic genes in heart development identified in experimental models prompted us to assess their potential association with human cardiac function. This study aimed at investigating the possible association of variants of apoptotic genes with echocardiographic traits and to identify new genetic markers associated with cardiac function. Genome wide data from different studies were obtained from public repositories. After quality control and imputation, a meta-analysis of individual association study results was performed. Our results confirmed the role of caspases and other apoptosis related genes with cardiac phenotypes. Moreover, enrichment analysis showed an over-representation of genes, including some apoptotic regulators, associated with Alzheimer’s disease. We further explored this unexpected observation which was confirmed by genetic correlation analyses. Our findings show the association of apoptotic gene variants with echocardiographic indicators of heart function and reveal a novel potential genetic link between echocardiographic measures in healthy populations and cognitive decline later on in life. These findings may have important implications for preventative strategies combating Alzheimer’s disease.

Background: Depression is common in Alzheimer's and vascular dementia and is associated with poorer outcomes; however, less is known about the impact of depression on frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of diagnostic methods and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in FTD. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE and PsychINFO were queried for ‘depression' and/or ‘depressive mood' in behavioral- and language-variant FTD. The prevalence and diagnosis of depressive symptoms were extracted from relevant studies and the results pooled using a random-effects model. Results: We included 29 studies in this meta-analysis, with sample sizes ranging from 3 to 73 (n = 870). The omnibus estimated event rate of depressed mood was 0.334 (33%; 95% CI: 0.268-0.407). Symptoms were most commonly assessed via standardized neuropsychiatric rating scales, with other methods including subjective caregiver reports and chart reviews. The study results were heterogeneous due to the variability in diagnostic methods. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms similar to those in other dementias are commonly detected in FTD. However, the diagnostic methods are heterogeneous, and symptoms of depression often overlap with manifestations of FTD. Having a standardized diagnostic approach to depression in FTD will greatly facilitate future research in this area.

Predominantly, a school provides pedagogical support to its students, though perceptions about the school’s internal environment can incessantly influence a student’s aggregated learning experience. The present study aims to investigate the impact of the campus environment on students’ study engagement and the roles of self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation on this association. A hypothetical model about the relationship between campus perception, self-concept clarity, intentional self-regulation, and study engagement was tested. A total of 1597 students from Gansu Province, China, selected through a convenience sampling technique, were surveyed utilizing self-rated scales. Data were collected utilizing the Study Engagement Scale, Perceptions of School Climate Scale, Intentional Self-Regulation Scale and Self-Concept Clarity Scale. Results showed lower to moderate positive correlations between study variables. Students’ campus environment perceptions positively predicted adolescents’ study engagement. This association was also mediated by self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation. All of these factors explained 41.26% variability of the study engagement. These findings show how the learning environment can impact students. Specifically, these results help demonstrate that self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation have academic importance to optimize students’ study engagement that in turn promotes quality learning.

This study investigated the relationship between teachers' educational beliefs and their perceptions about school climate. The study was designed as a correlational survey model. The sample included 357 teachers working in the central districts of Van province in 2019-2020 academic year. "Educational Beliefs Scale" and "School Climate Scale" were used as data collection tools. Correlational and regression analyses were carried out to explore the relationships among the study variables. According to the results, teachers' beliefs about contemporary philosophical approaches were strong. In terms of teachers' perceptions of school climate, all scores were close to each other, but higher scores were found in directive and supportive school climates. Results concerning the relationship between education beliefs and school climate showed that teachers having progressivist and existentialist education beliefs saw their schools as more supportive and directive while teachers having a reconstructionist educational philosophy perceived their schools as more directive and restrictive. Teachers adopting a perennialist educational belief interestingly described their schools as more supportive, directive and intimate. As expected, teachers who follow essentialist beliefs in education regarded their schools as more restrictive in terms of climate. The results of the study indicated that teachers' philosophical beliefs about education were, although at a low level, a significant predictor of their perception of school climate.
