The so called “black sea cucumber” are found in Indonesia as several species including Holothuria atra, H. leucospilota, H. coluber, H. excellens and H. turriscelsa. The local community of Wainure village near Pombo Island in central Maluku had reported that most sea cucumbers inhabiting the island are the black sea cucumbers or locally known as “teripang hitam.” They are occasionally consumed but not exploited excessively by the locals. The goals of this study are to identify the species of black sea cucumbers inhabiting Pombo Island and map their distribution to understand the microhabitats of black sea cucumber. Two field surveys conducted in March and April 2014 collected more than 550 individuals of black sea cucumbers that belong to two species Holothuria (Halodeima) atra Jaeger, 1833, and Holothuria (Mertensiothuria) leucospilota Brandt, 1835. Furthermore, distribution maps of these two species show that they are found only along the SE to SW coast of the island. Such distribution may relate to the availability of marine vegetation, as well as boulders and stones that provide shelters to the organism. The distribution maps also show that H. atra has a wider distribution than H. leucospilota in Pombo Island. This may be due to the semi-cryptic habit of H. Leucospilota’s (i.e. hiding its posterior body under rocks or crevices), making its distribution restricted to areas that provide ample shelters.

One of the downstream areas of the Komering River with potential for capture fisheries is Sungai Dua Village. One of the types of fish caught by fishermen in Sungai Dua is the three spot gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus). The three spot gourami fish is a type of freshwater consumption fish that has high economic value. But the fishes only rely on catches from nature. If the fishing is carried out continuously, without domestication and cultivation, it will cause a decline in the fish population. The research about the biological aspects of red-eye septic fish (Trichogaster trichopterus) which include food habits, relationship length and weight, condition factors and stomach fullness index. This research was conducted from April to June 2017. Sampling was carried out in the downstream waters of the Komering River in Sungai Dua Village, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Fish samples were analyzed at the Animal Taxonomy Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Sriwijaya University. The determination of stations in sampling was carried out using multiple sampling methods, namely purposive sampling and quota sampling. The result of this research showed that (1) the Cyanophyta is the main food for the three spot gourami, Diatomae and Desmidiacae as a complementary food, while the additional foods are Rhizopoda, Chlorophyta, Ostracoda, and Entomostraca, (2) The growth pattern of red-eyed fish is negative allometric with a b value of -2 (b <3), the increase in length is faster than the weight gain, (3) The highest condition factor value is found in the size range 6.01-7.00 cm of 23.25 gr / cm and the lowest condition factor value is in the size range 5.01-6.00 cm of 0.62 gr / cm, and (4) The highest hull fullness index value of the red eye sepat fish hull is in the size range 7.01-8.00 cm at 32.86% and the lowest hull fullness index value at the size range 8.01-9.00 cm is 2.05% .

Background: The study aimed to compare the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of saponin extracted from six sea-cucumber species, licorice, and ginseng to determine the most potent one. Methods: Antimicrobial activity assessed by well diffusion and agar dilution methods. The inhibitory effects of the tested extracts on cell growth of Liver (HePG-2) and breast (MCF-7) cell lines assessed by MTT [3- (4, 5- dimethyl thiazol-2yl) - 2, 5- diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay. Results: The results revealed that licorice extract presented higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains than sea-cucumber extracts; but has comparable results for Gram-negative (Salmonella tyhimurium, Klebsiella spp, and Acinetobacter baumanii). Holothuria atra body wall and Bohadschia tubules have the highest antifungal effect against Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida famata, Candida glabrata, and Candida tropicalis. Sea-cucumbers are more potent against fungal strains than licorice and ginseng extract. Licorice and ginseng presented higher cytotoxicity against HePG2 and MCF-7 cell lines than sea-cucumbers. Conclusion: This study promotes the use of licorice extract as a better antibacterial substance than sea-cucumber extracts, however the use of sea-cucumber extracts as antifungal agents than herbal extracts. Also, we support the utilization of licorice and ginseng as a cytotoxic agent instead of sea-cucumbers to stop the fishing of animals and consequently save it from extinction.

AbstractThe objective of the present study was to examine the length-weight relationships and condition factors of snapperLutjanus russellii, ponyfishAurigequula fasciataand white-spotted spinefootSiganus canaliculatusharvested from Ulelhee Bay, Banda Aceh City, Indonesia. These species are the predominant fishes caught by traditional beach trawl in Ulelhee Bay, Banda Aceh City, Indonesia. The sampling was conducted for three months from April to June 2015 at one-week interval. A total of 900 fish samples (300 individuals for each species) were measured for the total length and body weight. The length-weight relationships were calculated using Linear Allometric Model (LAM), while the relative weights (Wr) and Fulton’s condition (K) factors were calculated to assess the condition of the fish samples. The results showed that thebvalue of 3.04 in snapper indicates isometric growth pattern, while ponyfish and white-spotted spinefoot fish had the b values of 1.41 and 1.75, respectively, and these species display an allometric growth pattern. The average Fulton’s condition factor (K) of snapper was 3.01 for male and 2.49 for female; female ponyfish has the K value of 2.92 and 2.92 for male. In addition, the average K value of white-spotted spinefoot was 2.61 and 2.59 for female and male, respectively. The relative weight condition factor ranges from 58.73 to 166.09 for snapper, from 70.55 to 129.65 for ponyfish, and from 71.63 to 133.53 for white-spotted spinefoot. In general, the relative weight condition factors tendedto be 100. It is concluded that snapper has isometric growth pattern, while ponyfish and white-spotted spinefoot display the negative allometric growth pattern. The condition factors are in excellent condition and indicate a balance of prey and predator.
