Abstract Since the corrosion protection of mild steel samples in corrosive media (1 M of hydrochloric acid [HCl]) was cheap and successful, the ethanol extract of Posidonia oceanica leaves based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (P. oceanica/PVP) was analyzed using the weight reduction, the open circuit potential, and the potentiodynamic polarization methods. The obtained results explained that the productivity of hindrance increments had the greatest restraint efficiency of ∼81% at 1,000 ppm, as the concentration of the extract increased. Liable for adsorption as a thin layer on the surface of mild steel to protect it, the creation of kaolin-traced phenolic and polysaccharide compounds was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. A scanning electron microscope was used to evaluate the inhibitive action of P. oceanica/PVP against steel in corrosive media and the change in surface morphology was considered. It is presumed that the ethanol removed from the Posidonia oceanica leaves can fill in as a compelling consumption inhibitor for gentle steel in HCL solution (1 M).

“Green” materials and productive processes have progressively been searched for. In the last years, it has increased the number of researches regarding mycocomposites characterization and, above all, their applicability. Biofabrication is a process that is carried out by incubating the substrate composed of organic residues with fungal mycelium. During incubation, the fungus gradually develops on the substrate, penetrating the microscopic channels of the different residues, and acting both as a reinforcing fiber and as a binding material. This Project was designed to seek the most suitable combination between substrate components and the fungus Ganoderma sp.aiming to obtain a mycocomposite which could be used as a nucleus of an alternative monolithic constructive system. In this project, composites using the fungus Ganoderna sp. and five different types of waste (white wood sawdust, cornstarch, bark and coffee grounds, and piassava fiber) were investigated. The morphology of these components, as well as mycelium and substrate interaction, was studied by scanning electron microscopy technique. The mechanical properties were determined through bending and compression tests, being correlated with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The fabrication of a mycocomposite panel was proposed as an application; it could be included as the core of the prototype of a building system of walls, structured with steel and mortar. Thus, this project aimed to contribute to the ecosystem’s quality, once the raw material used was composed of organic waste that would be reinserted in a production process instead of being discarded in nature. Besides, the project suggests the production of a new biologically-based material for civil construction.

Corrosion of mild steel via chemical reaction in a corrosive environment is a problematic occurrence that is very common in oil and gas industries. Corrosion constitutes a huge part of the total costs in the production of oil and gas. Corrosion inhibitors have found interest in the scientific domain because they are mainly understood by their chemical complexes and formulations. Their utilization in small amount on metal surface used in oil and gas industries can help shield the metal from corrosion devoid of any significant alteration in the concentration of the corrosive media in the environment. An effort was made to study the possibility of using calf thymus gland DNA (CTGDNA) inhibitor in chlorine induced mild steel for possible usage in piping in oil and gas industry. The SEM micrograph shows that the adsorption of the CTGDNA biomacromolecules coat on the mild steel surfaces functions as a protection against HCl corrosive solution. Electrochemical study and weight loss analysis showed that the inhibitor efficiency (70.48 and 72%, respectively) of the tested DNA (CTGDNA) in HCl acidic corrosion environment for the mild steel was high at 1.5 M of HCl. The inhibitor efficiency decreased with increasing HCl concentrations. The open circuit potential (OPC) revealed that the mild steels got corroded until the end of the immersion. The intensities of XRD peak substantiate the existence of corrosion products of FeCl2.

Free radicals and reactive species are widely believed to contribute to the development of several diseases by causing oxidative stress and eventually oxidative. Vernonia amygdalina (Astereacea) is a small shrub or tree between 1 and 5m high growing throughout tropical Africa. Plants are generally known as bitter leaves is well cultivated and is a general market for merchandise in several countries. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of hexane fraction from ethanol extract od Frican leaves (Vernonia amygdalina Del.). The method used in this study was the DPPH (1,1-Diphenil-2-Picrylhydrazyl) method. The result of phytochemical screening showed that ethanolic extract of African leaves contained a composition of secondary metabolites of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids/triterpenoids and saponins. The antioxidant activity of the extract of n-hexane fraction was classified as very weak with an IC50 value of 317.98 ppm.

The determination of the antibacterial activity (zone of inhibition) and minimum inhibitory concentration of medicinal plants a crucial step in drug development. In this study, the antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration of the ethanol extract of Myrsine africana were determined for Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The zones of inhibition (mm±S.E) of 500mg/ml of M. africana ethanol extract were 22.00± 0.00 for E. coli,20.33 ±0.33 for B. cereus,25.00± 0.00 for S. epidermidis and 18. 17±0.17 for S. pneumoniae. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) is the minimum dose required to inhibit growth a microorganism. Upon further double dilution of the 500mg/ml of M. africana extract, MIC was obtained for each organism. The MIC for E. coli, B. cereus, S. epidermidis and S. pneumoniae were 7.81mg/ml, 7.81mg/ml, 15.63mg/ml and 15.63mg/ml respectively. Crude extracts are considered active when they inhibit microorganisms with zones of inhibition of 8mm and above. Therefore, this study has shown that the ethanol extract of M. africana can control the growth of the four organisms tested.

Corrosion behavior of mild steel in acidic medium usingAdhatoda Vasica(AV) extract was investigated. The inhibitive effective ofAdhatoda Vasicaon the corrosion of mild steel in different acidic medium has been studied by weight loss and polarization methods. The Ecorrvalues are shifted slightly towards negative side in presence of inhibitors which indicate the inhibitors inhibit the corrosion of mild steel in acids solution by controlling both anodic and cathodic reactions due to the blocking of active sites on the metal surface. It is evident that inhibitors bring about considerable polarization of the cathode as well as anode. It was, therefore, inferred that the inhibitive action is of mixed type.

Sunlight has many health benefits, but high sun exposure can also cause skin problems ranging from redness, inflammation, and the worst is triggering the appearance of skin cancer. One way to protect the skin from the sun is by using a sunscreen. Kersen Leaf (Muntingia calabura L.) has a high total flavonoids and total phenolic so that it can be used as a natural active ingredient for making sunscreen creams. The purpose of this study was to formulate and evaluate sunscreen cream preparations with variations in the concentration of ethanol extract of Kersen Leaf  Muntingia calabura L.) and to know the SPF value. Extract of kersen leaves (Muntingia calabura L.) using the maceration method with 70% ethanol. The extract was concentrated using a rotary evaporator. Four formulas were made with variations in the concentration of ethanol extract of kersen leaves. Formula 1 (cream base) without ethanolic extract of kersen leaves; formula 2 with ethanol extract of 1 gram kersen leaves; formula 3 with ethanol extract of 2 grams kersen leaves and formula 4 with ethanol extract of 3 grams kersen leaves. The four formulas were tested for physical, chemical and SPF values. Testing the SPF value using spectrophotometric method. For sticky power does not meet standard because it is less than 4 seconds. The Formula 1 SPF value is 0.1149; formula 2 is 7.6574 (extra protection); formula 3 is 13.7847 (maximum protection); and formula 4 is 19.0871 (ultra protection). The greater the concentration of ethanol extract of kersen leaves the greater the SPF value. From the results of the study, it was found that the four formulas fulfilled the requirements of physical and chemical characteristics, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, distribution, and viscosity, and had a significant SPF values, namely formula 2, 3 and 4.
