A study was carried out to test whether a single count of radicle emergence (RE test) would correlate with the storage potential of seed lots of cucurbit (C. maxima × C. moschata) rootstock cultivars. The RE test was performed by counting radicle emergence percentage between 26 and 100 hours of germination. Seed longevity was determined by storage at 75% relative humidity at 35°C over 100 days, with seed survival curves constructed based on normal germination percentages. Ki (estimated initial viability in probits), σ (standard deviation of the normal distribution of seed death in time) and p50 (time for viability to fall to 50%) were determined through probit analysis. Correlation analysis showed that RE counts particularly between 30 and 34 hours were highly (P < 0.01) correlated with normal germination percentage, Ki and p50. It can be concluded that RE tests can be used as an indicator of subsequent seed lot longevity in cucurbit rootstock seed cultivars.

Light, temperature, relative humidity (RH), and GA3 affect vinca [Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don] seed storage and/or germination. GA3 failed to increase the germination percentage in darkness but significantly increased the percentage in continuous light. Similarly, GA3 treatment reduced both the number of days required to achieve 50% of the final germination percentage (T50) and the span between 10% and 90% germination (T90 — T10) for seeds in light, but not in darkness. Germination percentages were maximal and about equal at 25, 30, or 35C in darkness; germination was lowest below 25C. Germination T50 and T90 — T10 required the fewest days between 25 and 35C. Reducing seed moisture from 9.9% to 3.9% increased the T50 from 2.4 to 3.0 days but failed to change germination percentages. Germination percentage declined linearly as seed storage temperatures were reduced from 5 to — 20C, whereas days to T50 increased. Seed storage for 12 months without reduction in germination percentage was possible at 5C and 11%, 33%, or 52% RH, but storage at 75% or 95% RH for periods exceeding 1 month reduced germination. Seeds stored at 33% or 52% RH required fewer days to T50 than did seeds stored at 11%, 75%, or 95% RH. Chemical name used: gibberellic acid (GA3).

Currently, the soil-aggregate mixture has been widely used in some large-scale site preparation projects, compaction characteristics has been pay more attention by many engineers and researchers. However, systematic research is insufficient on how to choose the filler. Moreover, some industry regulations are different on the requirements about filler. This paper relies on a certain big site preparation projects, discussing statistical characteristics and correlation on the maximal grain size, contents of the coarse grain, gradation and other parameters of soil-aggregate mixture. The results show that the maximal and the median grain size have small discreteness and normal distribution, indicating site filler is easy to reach the requirement; The coefficient of curvature, coefficient of nonuniformity and the coarse grain content have large discreteness, and dont obey normal distribution, indicating the filler has large variability. The median grain size is highly relevant to the coarse grain content; the maximal grain size isnt relevant to the coefficient of nonuniformity, the coefficient of curvature and the coarse grain content. According to the results of correlation analysis, we suggest that the importance order follow by coarse grain content, the maximum grain size and gradation for the control parameters of filler. This research may be significant to other similar projects.

In this paper, we propose a new synthetic sampling plan assuming that the quality characteristic follows the normal distribution with known and unknown standard deviation. The proposed plan is given and the operating characteristic (OC) function is derived to measure the performance of the proposed sampling plan for some fixed parameters. The parameters of the proposed sampling plan are determined using non-linear optimization solution. A real example is added to explain the use of the proposed plan by industry.

The aim of this paper is to answer the question of the distribution of welding distortions. The MIG method was used to make 31 butt welds of 0H18N9 sheet metal, of 6 mm thickness and dimensions 150x350 mm. All joints are made with constant parameters of the welding process. Statistical analysis of the distribution and Kolomogorov-Smirnov test were used in this paper. On the grounds of the analysis it was proved that the distribution of welding deformations is a normal distribution. This justifies the use of experiment planning methods and the use of average values. The relatively high value of the standard deviation makes it necessary to take into account the geometrical parameters of the joint.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an agricultural commodity which is widely consumed by the community. The obstacle experienced in cultivation is that a relatively long dormancy period of about 6-7 months. The dormancy of garlic seeds occurs because the embryo has not yet been fully formed, and the growth hormone and inhibitory hormone are not balanced. The methods used to break dormancy and accelerate germination are by using corona incandescent plasma radiation and storage temperature. The research utilized factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of six treatments with five replications. The first factor was the corona incandescent plasma radiation carried out on the garlic seeds ‘Lumbu Kuning’ variety with time duration of 0, 15, and 30 minutes. The second factor was storage temperature comprising of room temperature and cold temperature of 7oC stored for 30 days. Viability parameters observed are germination percentage dan the length of sprouts. The data were analyzed by using ANOVA followed by the DMRT test at the 95% confidence level. The results showed that corona incandescent plasma radiation influenced the germination percentage using plasma radiation for 15- 30 minutes.

Abstract. The effects of packaging and storage conditions on the moisture content and instrumental and sensory textural properties of raw and salty light roasted (SLR) California almonds were studied under different storage conditions. The controlled combinations included low, medium, and high temperatures and low and high relative humidity (RH). Almond samples were packaged in cartons or polyethylene (PE) bags with and without vacuum. Both absorption and desorption of moisture by almonds were observed during storage and were dependent on the packaging and storage conditions. In general, gradual changes were observed for samples with PE and vacuum PE packaging in most of the storage conditions, while the samples packed in cartons showed more dramatic changes because these unprotected samples were more vulnerable to seasonal changes in humidity. The SLR almonds showed consistent moisture gains, while the raw almonds tended to lose moisture content in most of the storage conditions. This may be attributed to the low initial moisture content of the SLR samples. All raw samples packed in cartons became softer over time. The softening tended to be enhanced by high storage humidity and temperature. The raw almonds packaged in PE bags were firmer than those packed in cartons but also became softer over time. The firmness of the SLR samples was generally lower than that of raw samples, probably because roasting reduced the density and mechanical strength of the kernels. The firmness of PE packaged SLR samples increased in uncontrolled storage conditions and in higher storage temperature and humidity conditions but decreased slightly in lower temperature and humidity conditions. Vacuum packaging did not affect the firmness much. Using PE packaging and maintaining the RH below 50% and the temperature below 25°C are effective in stabilizing both raw and processed almonds. The classical JMAK equation was modified by combination with distribution density of the rate parameter k, which was deduced from a normal distribution of local strain. The modified equation is able to calculate the JMAK plots and the average Avrami exponent to characterize the entire heterogeneous recrystallization process. This new extension can successfully describe the relevant experimental observations, such as a smaller exponent than the basic JMAK theory predicts, and a decreasing slope of JMAK plots with the proceeding recrystallization. Moreover, it reveals that the Avrami exponent observed experimentally should significantly decrease with the increasing standard deviation of local strain distribution. In addition, it has a great potential to explain why most of experimentally observed values of Avrami exponents are less than 2 and why the Avrami exponent is insensitive to temperature and deformation conditions when the real standard deviation of local strain distribution in deformed metals is known.
