This article discusses the diversity in verbalization of the concept UNIVERSITY in the English educational discourse. The definition of the notions “concept”, “educational discourse” have been revealed through cognitive linguistics. The analysis is based on the most common variants of the English language – British and American. The research has been conducted on the basis of the educational discourse of the leading universities of the UK and the USA, namely, 5 leading universities of the UK and 5 universities of the USA. In order to study the diversity in verbalization of the concept UNIVERSITY a frame structure has been chosen. This structure fully reflects the lexica‑and‑semantic features of the concept under study. The article presents a schematic view of the concept UNIVERSITY, where its components has been highlighted: subframes, slots and subslots. When examined the concept UNIVERSITY, component and conceptual analysis has been used, so that the vocabulary definitions of the verbalizers of the concept under study have been compared. The analysis has shown that the lexical unit “university” is a concept that includes a whole range of characteristics and associations. Different lexical units presented in the educational discourse have been examined on the basis of English-speakers’ perception. It has been stated that lexical‑and‑semantic structure of the concept UNIVERSITY is quite a complex and developed one. Significant differences in the use of lexical units that actualize the concept UNIVERSITY has been considered. The reason for this difference are linguocultural as well as historical features of the development of the two variants of the English language.

The current paper presents the analysis of pronouns as means of impersonal presentation in English quality press. The article gives the definition of the pronoun as a grammatical category and describes the use and purpose of impersonalization strategies. The data for the investigation was taken from the international English quality newspapers: The Financial Times (UK) and The Wall Street Journal (US), which are the leading daily broadsheet newspapers in the UK and the USA having millions of both print and online subscribers worldwide. The articles on political, economic, and social issues were chosen on a random basis and scrutinized for pronouns as means of impersonal presentation of fact. The body of 187 cases of impersonalization chosen for the analysis were divided into groups with focus on the grammatical category they belong to. The most and least often used classes of pronouns were identified and compared. The results of the current study may be useful for editors, journalists, writers, as well as for further study of impersonalization strategies in the English language.

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how, while remaining within a specific field such as medicine, it is possible to use different languages depending on the target audience (doctors, professionals from other fields or patients) in order to improve its degree of health literacy. In particular, the aim is to show how even the definition of a disease, which should in principle be unambiguous, can in fact be linguistically adapted to the reader's basic knowledge. Methodology: Five definitions of mesothelioma are examined, analysed lexically, syntactically and graphically. Specifically, this comparison is made on three main levels, which in turn have different nuances: popular, including definitions from Wikipedia and the UK Mesothelioma patient portal; intermediate, corresponding to the Collins English language dictionary; and specialist, with definitions from the MeSH thesaurus and the Orphanet database. Results: At the end of the comparative analysis, it is possible to state that in linguistic and Health Literacy terms there is no single definition for this rare disease but as many definitions as there are targets. In particular, they vary in syntactic structure, graphic form and vocabulary, as they have to use technicalities typical of the medical field but have different nuances of complexity. Conclusion: A comparison of the definitions shows that the degree of readability does not always correspond to that of comprehensibility. The analysis demonstrates that it is difficult to explain complex medical concepts to practitioners and patients in a simple, clear and usable way and that this requires specific techniques of Health Literacy, related to both the linguistic and graphic aspects. The comparison of definitions is therefore a methodological premise for the creation of brochures dedicated to mesothelioma and the revision of the "Mai soli" site for mesothelioma patients.

(Under My Skin, The Door That Led To Where, End Game, Liccle Bit, The Art of Being Normal, 2015 г.). Примеры были получены при прочтении художественной прозы современных британских авторов (J. Dawson, S. Gardner, A. Gibbons, A. Wheatle, L. Williamson) Introduction. The given analysis is about 475 modern phraseological units that contribute to the formation of the phraseological picture of the world. The study examines the relationship of semantics and the form of phraseological units, due to the situation of communication. The phraseology of a language as part of the linguistic picture of the world is included in the framework of the study of cognitive linguistics. Aim. This study is aimed at identifying and describing modern phraseological units, as an example of allegorical expression in the communication process to achieve certain cognitive goals. Material and methods. The presented empirical material in the article is an actual selection from a modern literary text (Under My Skin, The Door That Led To Where, End Game, Liccle Bit, The Art of Being Normal – 2015 publication). Examples were obtained by reading fiction of modern British authors (J. Dawson, S. Gardner, A. Gibbons, A. Wheatle, L. Williamson), by the method of continuous sampling. Results and discussion. The analysis allowed us to consider the cognitive aspect of phraseological units. It is established that a broad approach to the study of phraseology expands the boundaries of phraseological doctrine and allows you to consider more structural and semantic forms of phraseological units. The following modern phraseological units are considered and analyzed in the article: phraseological units, phraseological units derivatives and author formations. The semantic features of derivatives of phraseological units and copyright formations are analyzed in the framework of modern phraseology of the English language. It is shown that the structural complexity of phraseology is based on the cognitive aspect of its semantic structure. Conclusion. The analysis made it possible to identify the structural range of phraseological units and consider their transformative processes according to semantics and situational use. The study shows that the modification of phraseological structures and the introduction of new idiomatic phrases (derivatives of phraseological units and author’s idiomatic expressions) are due to linguistic and cultural needs in the expression of society. All analyzed modern phraseological units of the English language are considered as operational units of thinking of the present time and are a means of reflecting the linguistic picture as a whole. The linguistic picture of the world is a reflection of the external and internal world of a person, his thinking and speech. The modern phraseology of the English language reflects changes in human comprehension, understanding and interpretation of the outside world. The phraseological unit has a complex structure and belongs to a special linguistic category, which leads to an increase in the interest of cognitive research. Thus, the study of phraseology at this stage should be focused on the phraseological unit, its meaning and its usage.

An application of the Gross and Gross method for the evaluation of periodicals to the literature of rheumatology used by workers in the UK and USA, has shown that a relatively small number of English language periodicals, the majority of which are not specialist rheumatology ones, contain a high percentage of the relevant papers. It is hoped that this data will be of value in the organization and administration of medical libraries and information units, and useful to the rheumatologist anxious to regularly scan those periodicals which are potentially of the most use to him.

AbstractThis paper examines English-language online newspapers from the UK, the USA and Australia and analyses the images of news articles about migration. To do so, the newspapers The Guardian, USA Today and The Sydney Morning Herald have been chosen and news articles collected in August 2016. The corpus consists of 650 news articles comprising about half a million of words. From these, 1,300 images have been extracted, sorted into migration- and not migration-related images and then grouped thematically. Selected and high-frequency categories are examined in more detail, example images analysed more closely, and patterns found and common characteristics are discussed. Investigating a larger image corpus is rare in discourse analysis and is still missing for migration-related issues.

AbstractObjectiveThe current systematic review aimed to identify and critically appraise research on food environments in sports settings, including research into the types of food and beverages available, the extent and impact of food and beverage sponsorship and marketing, and views about food environments among key stakeholders.DesignA systematic review. Fourteen English-language studies (two were papers describing different facets of the same study), published between 1985 and 2011, were identified from searches of electronic databases and bibliographies of primary studies.SettingMost studies originated from Australia (n 10), with the remaining studies originating in the UK (n 1), New Zealand (n 1), the USA (n 1) and Canada (n 1). Data were collected from observations in stadia, websites and televised sports events, through in-depth interviews, focus groups and surveys with sports club members, parents and quick serve restaurant managers.ResultsLiterature exploring food environments in sports settings was limited and had some important methodological limitations. No studies comprehensively described foods available at clubs or stadia, and only one explored the association between food and beverage sponsorship and club incomes. Club policies focused on the impact of health promotion funding rather than the impact of sponsorship or food availability in sports settings.ConclusionsFurther research, including comprehensive studies of the food environment in sports settings, is required to document the availability, sponsorship and marketing of food and beverages at national, regional and club levels and to estimate how sports settings may influence children's diets.

Based on contrastive interlanguage analysis, this study explores the usage of lexical bundles occurring in doctoral dissertations produced in the English language related studies in the USA by L1 American English speakers and in Turkey by Turkish speakers of English in the last ten years between 2010-2019. In our analysis of the data, we identified a significant number of types of 4-word bundles from both corpora from a structural and functional perspective. The findings regarding the types of lexical bundles and their structural and functional dispersions revealed significant differences between the two corpora. While L1 English writers refrained from heavily utilizing formulaic sequences, the opposite could be observed in the works of L2 English authors. This study has significant implications for academic writers producing work in the English language since corpus-informed lists and concordances might be of great help to L2 speakers of English in identifying appropriate lexical bundles that are specific to their disciplines.

It is now widely accepted that English does not belong to the traditional native speaker countries such as the UK or the USA, and that English across the world has diversified and established roots in different parts of the world. Given this, studies have emerged, that focus on New Englishes being systems unto themselves, and not merely erroneous versions of more traditional “native” Englishes (Rajagopalan, 2012). Scholars today are calling for descriptions of New Englishes to form the bases of New English handbooks, which, they claim, could serve as pedagogical models. Linguists like Lange (2011) and Kachru (1994) and literary figures such as Salman Rushdie alike have called for the recognition of New Englishes to be accepted and used in order to better reflect the global nature of the language The aim of this study is to determine whether new international varieties of English are acceptable among language teachers. Specifically, the paper investigates how acceptable certain well-documented New Englishes structures are among English language professionals working at the tertiary level in the Arab world and North America. The results show that while participants are, in general, more tolerant of New English structures in students’ spoken forms than in both students and their own written forms, they stated that they would not use any of the structures in their own writing. Results also show that the respondents’ native language, specialization and educational qualifications are factors that impact their acceptance of these forms.

The article is devoted to the "taiga law" in the works of V. p. Astafiev, which is shown by the writer as a real concept existing in Siberia. The "taiga law" is noted in the literature and attracted the attention of literary critics, but the researchers did not turn to him, analyzing the work of the writer. In the ecological prose of V. P. Astafiev the significant place (and in some texts central one) to the code of the people's ecology, centuries-old and passed from generation to generation, as well as to the environmental symbol of the Siberian culture. The law includes the relation of man to man in the taiga existence and the relation of man to flora and fauna. Contrary to popular belief it is shown that the texts of V.P. Astafiev presented as a critical aspect of ecology (ecocriticism) and positive. The work is done in line with the ideas of cognitive linguistics, taking into account the conditionality of the literary text of the author's linguistic picture of the world, in the works of writers-villagers it is associated with a regional component. "Taiga law" is a regional mental concept that is waiting to be considered within the definition of "Siberian text". How the lexical unit "the law of the taiga" refers to the environmental vocabulary (Koslova). The article focuses on the features of the concept functioning as a sign- formator (W. Weinreich). In the article, the 10 components of the transformer are identified in the texts of the writer. This "unwritten" law, it exists in oral form, so has traits in common with folkloric elements: the writer, the nomination is presented in two variants (the "law of the taiga" and "strong law") is uncertain semantic scope, emotionally expressive painted. The spatial component of "taiga" is important in the nomination structure. This is an axiological concept based on evaluation, carrying a number of direct and hidden prohibitions. "Taiga law" appears in the texts of V. p. Astafiev, on the one hand, as organizing the beginning of the daily life of Siberians, on the other, as the cause of conflicts. In fiction texts creates tensions of the text, organizing the conflict both interpersonal and social. In some texts, the "taiga law" performs a plot-forming function. The results of the study essential for the theory of environmental prose, add a new element in the philological studies of Astafiev’s legacy.
