Pharmaconutrition: pharmacological approach to nutrition therapy

Reviewing the literature of nutrition therapy one can conclude that during the last decade the pharmacological action of several nutrients has been demonstrated. However, research activity is still at the beginning and it could be verified in a restricted number of nutrients only that in which conditions (illnesses), dose and duration we can expect therapeutic effect in addition to nutrition. The examples of glutamine, arginine, taurine, leucine, ω-3 fatty acids, however, support the possibility that complex reactions and treatment results observed in certain patients are not purely due to nutritional support but the consequence of additional pharmacological action as well. Evaluation of results of therapeutic intervention is especially difficult because in the everyday practice physicians try to use several therapeutic modalities that can be beneficial for the patient. Therefore, retrospective separation of beneficial components of the therapeutic agents is almost impossible. Only well designed, randomized and multicentric studies can verify specific therapeutic action of certain ingredients ie. nutrients. Orv. Hetil., 2014, 155(51), 2021–2027.

The association between nutrition and intestinal function is based on facts. The main function of the gut is to digest and absorb nutrients in order to maintain life. Consequently, chronic gastrointestinal diseases commonly result in malnutrition and increased morbidity and mortality. Chronic malnutrition impairs digestive and absorptive function. Parenteral and enteral nutritions are effective therapeutic modalities in several diseases. In cases of gastrointestinal malfunctions, nutrition has a direct therapeutic role. The benefit of nutrition therapy is similar to medical treatment in patients with pancreatitis, Crohn disease, hepatic failure, and in those with gastrointestinal fistulas. Nutrition has both supportive and therapeutic roles in the management of chronic gastrointestinal diseases. With the development of modern techniques of nutritional support, the morbidity and mortality associated with chronic gastrointestinal diseases can be reduced. Orv. Background: Chromatography is one of the important laboratory technique in which the components of a mixture are separated on an adsorbent in order to analyze, identify, purify and quantify a mixture. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)is used to support the identity of a compound in a mixture when the Rf of a compound is compared with the Rf of a known compound. High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography is a sophisticated and automated form of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The procedure simultaneously processes the sample and standard that results in better analytical precision and accuracy at a faster pace. Pharmacological/ Toxicological action of Nux Vomica is because of its active principles present in the seeds namely strychnine, brucine etc. This research paper aims to corelate the active principles present in Nux Vomica with the toxicological action of the same. Materials and Methods: 1. Standard Nux Vomica mother tincture was tested for its alkaloid markers and its correlation with the toxicological action was studied. 2. Analysis of the mother tincture was done using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography. 3. Stationary phase consisted of TLC Aluminium sheets with silica gel 60 F253 pre-coated layer (20cm x 10cm), thickness-0.2mm, no. of tracks-18, band length-6mm. 4. Mobile Phase consisted of Chloroform: Methanol (9.5:0.5). 5. The plate was developed in developing chamber and observed under U.V. Light. Results: Colours seen on the HPTLC Plates of samples are greenwhich corresponds to strychnine, dark blue which corresponds to brucine, orange to alkaloids fluorescent green to sterols and pink to fatty acids which are evident on the chromatogram. Conclusion: Therapeutic action of Nux Vomica as noted in Homoeopathic Materia Medica is because of the active principles like strychnine, brucine, alkaloids, sterols, fatty acids present in it which is evident from the chromatogram.

<p>However Kilka is a valuable fish in nutritional point of view, but a large part of it used in poultry feed. The main<br />reason is the undesirable odor. In this study Kilka oil was blended with milk at 1% and 2% level and then the<br />mixture spray dried. These encapsulated Kilka oil were added to cheese as a fortificant materials at 5% level.<br />Cheese without encapsulated Kilka oil was as a control treatment. Results showed that there was no significant<br />difference (p&gt;0.05) between color of fortificated cheese with control cheese. There was no significant difference<br />(p&gt;0.05) between odor of cheese with 5% encapsulated Kilka oil that contain 1% Kilka oil (A) with control<br />cheese. There was no significant difference (p&gt;0.05) between flavor of cheese with 5% encapsulated Kilka oil<br />that contain 1% Kilka oil (A) with cheese with 5% encapsulated Kilka oil that contain 2% Kilka oil (B) but there<br />was significant difference (p&lt;0.05) between these two treatments with control cheese. Also, the eicosapentaenoic<br />acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of fortified cheeses had significant difference (p&lt;0.05)<br />with control cheese.</p>

Osteoclast activities are responsible for the resorption of bone cells found in several bone diseases, one of which is periodontitis and arthritis. The downregulating signals of Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor kB (RANK)-RANK Ligand and Tumor Necrosis Factor  (TNF)-a are the major cause of the bone destruction. Studies and experiments have been performed to overcome this matter. Various medications are now available to treat bone-related diseases, targeting the specific aspect of the signaling. Synthetic drugs such as denosumab and bisphosphonates have complex pharmacological action and have been the leading choice in treatment. Evidence in studies proved that natural resources including herbal products have potential application to therapy for bone loss, with caffeic acid and Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) showing significant inhibitory results and Chinese herbs such as Herba epimedii (Yín Yáng Huò) and Fructus psoraleae(Bǔ Gǔ Zhī) proved to contain components that give similar effects to estrogen. The purpose of this review is to discuss the therapy value of available synthetic and natural therapeutic agents. Understanding the mechanisms of both agents will not only clarify their function as therapeutic agents, but can also be the key to the treatment of diseases caused by bone resorption by targeting specific aspects of osteoclastogenesis.Keywords: osteoclastogenesis, TNF, RANKL, bone resorption, natural resource, signaling, treatment

Asthma is one of the most important medical and social problems of our time due to the prevalence and the complexity of its treatment. Chronic inflammation that is characteristic of asthma is accompanied by bronchial obstruction, which involves various lipid mediators produced from n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The review is devoted to modern ideas about the PUFA metabolites—eicosanoids (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, thromboxanes) and specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) maresins, lipoxins, resolvins, protectins. The latest advances in clinical lipidomics for identifying and disclosing the mechanism of synthesis and the biological action of SPMs have been given. The current views on the peculiarities of the inflammatory reaction in asthma and the role of highly specialized metabolites of arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in this process have been described. The possibility of using SPMs as therapeutic agents aimed at controlling the resolution of inflammation in asthma is discussed.
