The social ties of the owners, directors, and managers of firms have cross-level effects on firms’ network development. Firms can develop affiliations with a business group and connections across business groups. We expand the theoretical focus of Mani and Durand’s examination of the family and community ties of firm leaders and their impact on firms’ business group networks. We discuss the relational content heterogeneity of those ties and the associated logic in developing a firm’s networking strategy. Thus, we suggest alternative developmental processes for a firm’s network development strategy.

This paper examines the cognitive foundations of natural theology: the intuitions that provide the raw materials for religious arguments, and the social context in which they are defended or challenged. We show that the premises on which natural theological arguments are based rely on intuitions that emerge early in development, and that underlie our expectations for everyday situations, e.g., about how causation works, or how design is recognized. In spite of the universality of these intuitions, the cogency of natural theological arguments remains a matter of continued debate. To understand why they are controversial, we draw on social theories of reasoning and argumentation.

Social service settings offer numerous complexities in their staffing, consumers, and payer mix that require careful consideration in designing dissemination and implementation efforts. However, social services’ unique access to vulnerable populations with health problems may prove vital in efforts to improve the health status of many of our citizens and reduce health disparities. While a number of well-developed, blended dissemination and implementation models are being used in social service settings, they all require additional documentation, research, and field experience. Nonetheless, the lessons learned in the social services may help organizations in other sectors better implement health interventions with complex consumers in complex settings.
