Abstract Objective: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of elderly quilombolas (residents of quilombo settlements first established by escaped slaves) in mixed urban and rural residential developments (agrovilas) in Alcântara, Maranhão, Brazil. Method: An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed. The sample consisted of 129 elderly people of both genders, aged 60 years or older and living in northeastern Brazil. The sample was allocated into three groups, distributed according to geographic space. Quality of life was assessed using the WHOQoL-Bref instrument and a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied. The comparison between groups was carried out using the Anova test (one-way) and subsequently the Bonferroni Post-Hoc test. The correlation was obtained by the Pearson test, p<0.05. Results: Elderly quilombolas had a mean age of 69.7 years (±7.9) and were predominantly men with low income and schooling. Quality of life had higher scores in the social domain (values) and lower in the environmental domain (values). Quality of life as measured by the psychological domain was higher in group I than in groups II (p=0.012) and III (p=0.002). The facets of QoL correlated with facets of health for group I (r=0.357; p=0.032) and III (r=0.461; p<0.001). Conclusion: The situation of the quilombola population surveyed is considered vulnerable and psychological factors influence QoL.

ObjectivesTo estimate the prevalence of disabling chronic pain (DCP) in Spanish adults, to analyse its characteristics, to determine its multimorbidity and to identify its associated factors.Settings2011 Andalusian Health Survey, a cross-sectional population survey based on face-to-face home interviews.Participants6507 people aged 16 years or older and living in Andalusia, Spain.OutcomesThe response variable was disabling chronic pain. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression models were used to analyse the association of factors with disabling chronic pain. The sample design was considered throughout the statistical analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of disabling chronic pain in the Spanish adult population was 11.36% (95% CI 11.23 to 11.49), while that of non-disabling chronic pain was 5.67% (95% CI 5.57 to 5.77). Disabling chronic pain was associated with high multimorbidity (especially in women (51%) and in the elderly (70%) with three or more additional chronic diseases), as well as with disadvantaged social status (such as female gender (OR=2.12), advanced age (OR10-year increase=1.28), unemployment (OR=1.33), manual work (OR=1.26), low income (OR=1.14) and reduced emotional social support (OR=1.04)). Other influential factors were tobacco consumption (OR=1.42), sleeping ≤7 hours (OR=1.2)], environmental or work conditions (OR=1.16) and quality of life (ORmental=1.21, ORphysical=2.37).ConclusionsThe population with disabling chronic pain was associated with multimorbidity, vulnerable social status and an impaired quality of life. In contrast, the population with non-disabling chronic pain showed almost no differences when compared with the population without chronic pain. The association between DCP and mental disorders highlights the need for psychosocial services in the management of chronic pain.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the association between the experiences of sexuality and quality of life in older adults. Method: Cross-sectional study developed with a total of 300 older adults living in northeastern Brazil. Data collection was carried out entirely online between August and October 2020. Participants completed the online questionnaire containing three instruments for assessing bio sociodemographic data, sexuality and quality of life. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation and multivariate linear regression tests, adopting a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05). Results: Older adults experience better affective relationships and have better quality of life in sensory abilities and intimacy. In the regression analysis, only affective relationships (β = 0.510; [95% CI: 0.340–0.682]; p < 0.001) and physical and social adversities (β = −0.180; [95% CI:−1.443–0.434]; p < 0.001) remained associated with the general quality of life of older adults. Conclusion: Health professionals must invest in training, development of individual and group educational interventions, in addition to promoting the strengthening of bonds between older adults so that they feel free and comfort in expressing their intimate needs.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the quality of life and the burden of female caregivers. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study carried out with 224 informal caregivers from March to July 2016. Three instruments were used: a characterization form for the caregiver, the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire and the Zarit Burden Interview. The following tests were used: Cronbach’s Alpha, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman and Mann-Whitney. Results: The mean age of caregivers was 51.8 years with a standard deviation of 13.7. They were predominantly married, had a low income and low level of education, were first-degree relatives, had been providing care for one to five years and presented some pathology. The associations of quality of life that presented statistical significance were: income, marital status, number of people living with the caregiver and time of care. Conclusion: The burden was negatively correlated with QOL, that is, the greater the burden, the more impaired will be the life of these caregivers.

Interest in quality of life in mental health care has been stimulated by the deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients as well as a parallel interest in understanding the scope of their daily lives. This study aims to investigate the socio-demographic and clinical variables related to low quality of life, using a cross-sectional design to evaluate quality of life by means of the QLS-BR scale. We interviewed a sample of 123 outpatients from a reference mental health center in Divinópolis, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, clinically diagnosed with schizophrenia. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out. The results showed that low quality of life is associated with one or more of the following: male gender, single marital status, low income plus low schooling, use of three or more prescribed psychoactive drugs, psychomotor agitation during the interview, and current follow-up care. The study identifies plausible indicators for the attention and care needed to improve psychiatric patient treatment.

Objective: To identify the sociodemographic profile and to compare the quality of life of elderly people who practice physical exercises in a group with sedentary elderly. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, composed of two groups: Group I consisted of 50 elderly people practicing physical exercise in a group; and Group II composed of 50 sedentary elderlies. Data were collected through two questionnaires; one questionnaire focused on the sociodemographic data survey and the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. The data were analyzed by the BioEstat 5.0 program using the Z-Test. Results: Group I had better scores in the domains, limitations due to physical aspects and general health, in the other domains, group II had better scores. Factor that can be attributed to the modality of the physical exercise performed by group I that was in the group I and by the form of the allocation of the sample. Conclusion: The women were mostly in group I, and both groups were comprised of seniors over 61 years old, widowers and retirees. Statistically, only the general state of health showed a significant difference between the two groups.

The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of odontogenic infection in low-income Brazilian schoolchildren and evaluate its association with the subjective variables of oral health-related quality of life and dental pain. In this cross-sectional study, 230 schoolchildren aged eight to ten years old underwent a clinical oral survey in which the DMFT/dmft and PUFA/pufa indexes were measured. Afterward, children responded individually to the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ8-10) and self-reports of dental pain were collected. Data were statistically analyzed using MannWhitney or Kruskal-Wallis test with a post-test by Dunn's and Pearson correlation. Of the children evaluated, 42.6% had odontogenic infection and 80% reported experiencing dental pain. Children's age (p = 0.034) and past experience of dental pain (p < 0.002) were associated with odontogenic sepsis, in addition to impairment of their emotional well-being (p = 0.008), social welfare (p = 0.009) and overall impact on quality of life (p = 0.019). Toothache intensity (p < 0.001), frequency (p < 0.001) and duration (p < 0.001) were correlated to the overall impact on children's quality of life. The prevalence of odontogenic infection remains high among low-income Brazilian schoolchildren. Pediatric infection and its related pain induce not only various biological disorders but also impair children's self-perception of quality of life.

IntroductionQuality of life is an important factor in evaluating health and therapeutic problems; therefore quality of life evaluation is an important issue in medical articles. The present study investigates quality of life in 15–64 years old subjects in Kurdistan province.AimsDetermining factors impacting quality of life in Iran.ObjectivesThe present study investigates quality of life in 15–64 years old subjects in Kurdistan province.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional descriptive and analytic study. The target population was 15 to 64 years old population in Iran. 700 individuals participated in this study. The information gathered with Euro His questionnaire. The data was then analyzed by using independent t test and multiple regression.ResultsSubjects included 352 males (50.4%) and 346 females (49.6%). Quality of life mean score in all subjects was 28.18 (± 4.6). The mean score in men and women were 28.78 and 27.57 respectively. Asthma, smoking, female sex, residency in urban and low income had negative effect on quality of life in multiple regression (R2 = 0.151) but age, diabetes, hypertension and sport activity didn’t have any effect on quality of life after adjustment for other variables.ConclusionQuality of life score in women was lower than men. It is thus necessary to examine effective factors on decreased quality of life in women and making plans to eliminate the negative factors. According to the results, low income, smoking, residency in urban and asthma have adverse effects on quality of life. These factors should thus be considered in health programs.

Abstract Analyze the influence of deep-degree burns on the quality of life (QoL) of women at treatment in ambulatory after hospital discharge. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a reference public hospital for burns in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, from August 2017 to May 2018. Fifty adult women over 20 years old who suffered deep burns and were in outpatient rehabilitation treatment were included. The variables studied were biological, sociodemographic, and clinical. The dynamometry and goniometry tests and the instruments to verify the QV Burn-Specific Health Scale–Revised were included in the analysis. Multiple linear regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with the six domains of the QoL instrument. The results identified a greater negative influence of burns on the QoL of women when associated with the variables: dark-black skin color, low levels of education, low income, motion impairment in right upper limb and lesions less than 6 months in the face, head and neck region. It should be noticed that the overall QoL score presented a median of 92.0, a score considered high, revealing an important QoL impairment. Deep-degree burn victims had a great impact on physical, emotional, and psychological abilities, acting harmfully on their self-image and causing difficulties in the execution of their daily and professional life activities, which are reinforced by aspects such as social position, level of education, and extent and duration of injury, resulting in a low QoL.

Objective: To assess the quality of life (QoL) of Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients in West Bank, Palestine using the Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire-Revised (CFQ-R) form. Method: A cross-sectional study involving application of CFQ-R questionnaire in CF patients attending pediatric pulmonology clinic at Caritas Baby Hospital (CBH). Their health status was assessed by measuring different parameters including pulmonary function test (FEV1) and body mass index (BMI). Results: The sample consisted of 77 patients from 58 families: 46.75% were males. Mean age was 10.7 years. Patients were divided into three groups by age in years: group I (< 6), II (6-13), and III (≥ 14). The highest and lowest CFQ scores were for the eat domain in group III (55.56 ± 22.49) and the body domain in group II (14.48 ± 17.67), respectively. Illness severity as measured by FEV1 mean value 69.6. BMI mean value of 15.998. The overall mean age at time of diagnosis in our sample was 4.16 years (± 6.239). The study showed that 1.7% of families had four affected siblings and 21% had death cases related to CF. Finally, all parameters for CF patients in West Bank, Palestine appear to be noticeably lower than those reported in other countries. Conclusions: quality of life for patients with CF is poor relative to international standards, the medications used including hypertonic saline and Gentamycin IV form used as nebulizer solution are not first line therapies around the world. This study illustrates the need of new therapies for CF patients in Palestine.
