Soybeans IAC-8 were harvested in the growth stages R7 and R8 commercial harvesting time and at two other subsequent times to compare their physiological and technological characteristics. Seeds were stored at two moisture levels, 12% and 15%, for 6 months. Germination and vigor (acelerated aging, electrical conductivity), oil and free fatty acids, peroxide and iodine values were evaluated periodically. As expected, the time of harvesting and seed moisture content affected seed performance, while oil content did not correlate to physiological quality as did acidity, peroxide value and iodine number.

Abstract: Several factors affect the electrical conductivity test efficiency, with emphasis given to the initial water content and the temperature during imbibition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the initial water content of pea seeds and the temperature on the electrical conductivity test efficiency. Six lots of ‘Mikado’ pea were used, which were previously tested for initial characterization. In the first trial, based on the initial value of the samples, the seed moisture content was adjusted to 9, 11, 13 and 15% and then the seeds were submitted to the electrical conductivity test. In the second trial, the water for seed imbibition was kept for 24 hours at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ºC, and after that time the seeds were added and soaked for other 24 hours at the temperatures already mentioned. It was observed that initial seed moisture content and water temperature during imbibition influenced the results of the electrical conductivity test. This test should be carried out with distilled water, previously maintained for 24 hours at 25 °C for temperature stabilization. Then, the seeds with seed moisture content between 11 and 15% should be put to soak at 25 °C, and maintained at this temperature for 24 hours.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of storage temperature on the viability and vigour of A. peregrina seeds. Seeds of A. peregrina harvested in Viçosa-MG, in September 2005 were used. The seeds were stored in the Laboratory of Forest Seeds Analysis (LASF) of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), in a cold chamber, under approximately 5ºC over150 days. The seeds were stored under 20ºC for 150 days more. Seed moisture was determined after oven-drying at 105 ± 3ºC for 24 hours. The seeds were analyzed monthly using germination, tetrazolium and electrical conductivity tests and Osmopriming during 300 days, with four repetitions of 25 seeds. A. peregrina seeds kept a constant percentage of germination and viable seeds under the tetrazolium test for five months of storage, under either 5ºC and 20ºC. The electrical conductivity test showed significant differences in relation to the storage period, proving to be more sensitive than the standard germination test. Seed priming in PEG -0,4 MPa solution was not efficient in recovering the viability and vigor of the stored seeds at 5ºC and 20ºC.

Seed treatment (ST) is an important practice for soybean crop. This research had the objective to evaluate the influence of seed moisture content in the response to different spray volumes (SV) used for seed treatment in soybean, considering effects on seed physiological quality. Three seed lots with distinct moistures were used: 7.2%, 10.1% and 13.0%. Untreated seeds (control) and three SV were tested: 8, 13 and 18 mL kg-1. All lots received the same treatment combination, containing insecticide, fungicide, fertilizer and biostimulant. This combination represented 8 mL kg-1 of SV; the doses of 13 and 18 mL kg-1 were obtained by adding 5 and 10 mL kg-1 of water, respectively. Evaluations of seed physiological quality consisted of electrical conductivity, seed respiration, germination and vigor tests. Results of all tests demonstrates that low-moisture soybean seeds (7.2%) are negatively affected by seed treatment within an SV range of 8 to 18 mL kg-1, while untreated seeds with equal moisture are not affected. Oppositely, high-moisture seeds (13.0%) are not affected by the SV tested, while intermediate-moisture seeds (10.1%) are affected by the higher SV. This result highlights seed moisture as a key parameter to be managed before soybean ST, aiming to maintain a high physiological quality.

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is infected by a large number of fungal pathogens, among them white mold agent [Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib) de Bary]. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of the seed-processing stages on the physical and physiological qualities and on the incidence of S. sclerotiorum in soybean seeds. In this study, seeds from eight cultivars coming from production fields naturally infested in the counties of the State of Goiás, Brazil, from two harvests (2009/2010 and 2010/2011), were used. Samples were collected in the processing stages: hopper, pre-cleaning, discard one (from pre-cleaning), cleaning, sieve classifiers, spiral, gravity table, and discard two (after cleaning until processing ending). The following parameters were evaluated: seed- moisture content, physical purity, germination and tetrazolium. Additional tests and the detection of S. sclerotiorum in paper roll and the neon method were performed. The processing of soybean seeds improves the physical and physiological quality of the seed lots, in addition to eliminating sclerotia. The stages of pre-cleaning and cleaning significantly reduce sclerotia in seed lot. The amount of sclerotia in the sample is not necessarily correlated with the incidence of S. sclerotiorum in mycelial form.

ABSTRACT: To facilitate seeding process of forage species, a common practice is to mix seeds with fertilizers in monocropping and intercropping or in implementing integrated livestock production systems. However, in prolonged periods of contact, the fertilizer’s salinity and acidity negatively affect the seeds’ physiological quality. Therefore, this study intends to verify the effect of ten periods (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours) of exposure to granular NPK fertilizer 04-30-16 on the vigor and germination of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu seeds. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three replication. The fertilizer and seed mixture registered a negative effect on seed moisture content, electrical conductivity, emergence, emergence speed index, and seedling and radicle length as the period of exposure to the fertilizer increased from 3 to 120 hours.

One of the obstacles in providing high quality soybean (Glycine max) seed is the infection of seed-borne fungal pathogens. Micro wave treatment is one of the alternative methods to control the seed-borne pathogens effectively but it needs to be further developed. This research consisted of two stages. The first stage was aimed to determine the best soybean seed moisture content in maintaining seed physiological quality after exposing to micro wave. The second stage was aimed to determine the most effective duration of micro wave exposure to reduce the rate of infection of seed-borne fungal pathogens using the best moisture content resulted from the first stage. The experiment  on seed moisture indicated that 9.20% was the best seed moisture content in maintaining the physiological quality when the seed was exposed to micro wave.  Furthermore, micro wave exposure of 60 seconds was able to control Aspergillus flavus, while the exposure of  80 seconds was able to control Fusarium sp., Curvularia sp., and A. niger.

The Dimorphandra mollis Benth. - Caesalpiniaceae is a native forest species coming from the Cerrado and Caatinga due to its economical and ecological use, which justifies the studies on seed germination. In this work, germinative performance of D. mollis seeds were studied in different conditions of temperature regime and substrate. The experimental delineation used was completely randomized in factorial 4 x 4 (4 substrates -sand, coconut fiber, vermiculite and paper towel; and 4 temperatures: 25, 30, 35 and 20-30ºC), with four replications of 25 seeds each. The following parameters were evaluated: seed moisture content, final germination, first germination count, germination speed index, length and dry matter weight. The best germination and vigor is obtained at 30 and 35ºC. The substrates paper towel and vermiculite allow satisfactory germinative performance of seeds, being suitable to evaluate the physiological quality of D. mollis seeds.

Seed moisture content is a well-recognised index of safe storage. However, when in equilibrium with the storage environment it is merely an indicator of the relative humidity of the air, which is the primary regulator of the growth of moulds and insects. The relationship is influenced by the profile of the seed components. During the 1990s, significant increases in the seed oil content of evening primrose were achieved through plant breeding. This paper shows that the equilibrium moisture content of evening primrose seeds declines significantly with increasing oil content. Hence, the moisture isotherm is altered and newer cultivars must be stored at slightly lower seed moisture contents to ensure that seed and oil quality are maintained.

<p>Seed development and vigor may be influenced by environmental stresses such as water deficit. Thus, this research was carried out to evaluate the effects of different irrigation treatments and harvest times on seed vigor of four spring safflower cultivars. Treatments were irrigations (irrigations after 70, 100, 130 and 160 mm evaporation, respectively) in main plots and safflower cultivars (Faraman, Goldasht, Sina and Soffeh) in sub-plots. Seeds were harvested in 5 days intervals at 7 stages during development and maturity. The highest and the lowest seed and seedling masss at all harvests and irrigation treatments were recorded for Faraman and Sina cultivars, respectively. Seed vigor of safflower cultivars as measured by electrical conductivity of seed leachates and seedling dry mass decreased with decreasing water availability. Maximum seed mass and seedling dry mass and minimum electrical conductivity were obtained at 40-45 days after flowering, depending on irrigation interval and cultivar. Seed moisture content at these stages was 15-20 %, which is suitable for direct and mechanical harvesting and threshing.</p>

During seed extraction in fleshy fruits, some procedures are necessary to ensure seed quality and minimize deterioration and microorganism activity; also seeds extracted under moist conditions need special care when drying. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of eggplant seeds submitted to different extraction and drying methods. In the first study, whole eggplant fruits were mechanically crushed and then fermented for 0, 24 and 48 hours, with and without applying hydrochloric acid during seed extraction. In the second study, seeds were extracted in a pepper peeler and then immediately washed in water and submitted to the following drying methods: Sun/24 h; Sun/48 h; 32 °C/24 h; 32 °C/48 h; 38 °C/24 h; 38 °C/48 h; Sun/24 h + 32 °C/24 h; Sun/24 h + 38 °C/24 h e 32 °C/24 h + 38 °C/24 h. The treatment efficiency of both experiments was evaluated from the following tests: seed weight, germination, first count, accelerated aging and seedling emergence. The results suggest that fermentation and applying hydrochloric acid to pulp/seed reduce the physiological seed quality. All drying methods reduced the seed moisture content permitting adequate storage and maintenance of seed physiological quality.
