Competition between ACCase-Inhibitor Resistant and Susceptible Sterile Wild Oat (Avena sterilis) Biotypes

Studies were conducted to determine the growth, fecundity, and competitive ability of an acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)–inhibitor resistant (R) sterile wild oat biotype compared with a susceptible (S) biotype. Seed germination studies indicated that there were no differences in seed germination and seedling vigor between R and S biotypes at any temperature regime. R and S biotypes were grown under noncompetitive and competitive arrangement in the greenhouse. Under noncompetitive greenhouse conditions, growth of the R biotype was similar to that of the S biotype on the basis of plant height, canopy area, and plant biomass. Seed production and weight of R and S plants were also at the same levels. Furthermore, relative competitiveness among the R and S sterile wild oat biotypes was investigated by means of replacement series experiments. The R and S biotypes were compared under seven mixture proportions (6 : 0, 5 : 1, 4 : 2, 3 : 3, 2 : 4, 1 : 5, and 0 : 6). No significant differences in competitive ability were observed between R and S biotypes on the basis of plant height, canopy area, or plant biomass. In most cases, relative crowding coefficient (RCC) values at 20, 60, and 100 d after transplanting (DAT) were close to one, indicating equal competitiveness between the R and S biotypes of wild oat used in this competitive study. However, in some cases, the RCC value was 1.31 for plant height, evident of a slight competitive advantage for the R biotype at 100 DAT. In general, ACCase-inhibitor R and S sterile wild oat biotypes were equally competitive, clearly without any growth penalty for R plants in either noncompetitive or competitive conditions.

Research was conducted to determine the competitiveness and fitness of a protoporphyrinogen oxidase (protox)-resistant common waterhemp biotype. Protox-resistant and protox-susceptible biotypes were grown under noncompetitive and competitive arrangements in the greenhouse. In the noncompetitive study, a single plant of each biotype was planted separately in 15-cm-diam pots. Photosynthesis, leaf area, and plant biomass were measured 10, 20, 30, and 40 d after transplanting (DATP). In general, photosynthesis rate and plant biomass were similar between biotypes. However, the protox-resistant biotype had higher leaf area than the susceptible biotype at 20, 30, and 40 DATP. A replacement series study was conducted in the greenhouse to evaluate the relative competitiveness of protox-resistant and protox-susceptible common waterhemp. Photosynthesis, leaf area, plant height, and plant biomass were measured 7, 14, 21, and 28 DATP. Protox-resistant and -susceptible common waterhemp were equally competitive 28 DATP. Relative crowding coefficient values 28 DATP were 0.86, 0.89, 1.09, and 1.13 for photosynthesis, leaf area, plant height, and plant biomass, respectively. This suggests protox-resistant and -susceptible common waterhemp were equally competitive and the frequency of protox-resistant biotype is unlikely to decrease in the absence of protox–herbicide selection pressure.

Herbicide resistance can affect seed germination and the optimal conditions required for seed germination, which in turn may impose a fitness cost in resistant populations. Winter wild oat [Avena sterilis L. ssp. ludoviciana (Durieu) Gillet and Magne] is a serious weed in cereal fields. In this study, the molecular basis of resistance to an ACCase herbicide, clodinafop-propargyl, in four A. ludoviciana biotypes was assessed. Germination differences between susceptible (S) and ACCase-resistant biotypes (WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4) and the effect of Isoleucine-1781-Leucine mutation on germination were also investigated through germination models. The results indicated that WR1 and WR4 were very highly resistant (RI > 214.22) to clodinafop-propargyl-contained Isoleucine to Leucine amino acid substitution. However, Isoleucine-1781-Leucine mutation was not detected in other very highly resistant biotypes. Germination studies indicated that resistant biotypes (in particular WR1 and WR4) had higher base water potentials than the susceptible one. This shows that resistant biotypes need more soil water to initiate their germination. However, the hydrotime constant for germination was higher in resistant biotypes than in the susceptible one in most cases, showing faster germination in susceptible biotypes. ACCase-resistant biotypes containing the Isoleucine-1781-Leucine mutation had lower seed weight but used more seed reserve to produce seedlings. Hence, integrated management practices such as stale seedbed and implementing it at the right time could be used to take advantage of the differential soil water requirement and relatively late germination characteristics of ACCase-resistant biotypes.

Competition between plants is one of the main interferences that occurs in agricultural systems and accounts for significant crop yield reductions. The aim of this study was to assess the competitive ability of corn in coexistence with the weed species Eleusine indica. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in the growing season 2010/2011, and were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. The experimental units consisted of plastic pots with a volumetric capacity of 8 L. Treatments were arranged in a replacement series with five proportions of corn plants and weed: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, respectively, with a constant population of eight plants per pot, at the end of each treatment. The competitiveness analysis was conducted through diagrams applied to the replacement series experiment and competitiveness index, and the variables evaluated were root, shoot, and total dry mass, and plant height. When in equal proportions, corn showed competitive ability equivalent to goosegrass in relation to the variables shoot, root, and total dry mass. Goosegrass was more competitive than the crop in relation to plant height.

Intraspecific and interspecific interference effects on growth, gas exchange, and water potential of wild oat and spring barley were measured under greenhouse conditions using a 1:1.06 barley to wild oat replacement series. Intraspecific barley interference affected barley growth more than interspecific wild oat interference. Interspecific wild oat interference with barley reduced wild oat growth more than intraspecific interference. Wild oat plant height surpassed barley plant height near barley anthesis. Growth and gas exchange of barley and wild oat responded the same to short-term water stress.

Understanding the relative competitiveness and seed germination patterns of herbicide-resistant weeds has implications for integrated weed management. Replacement series experiments were conducted in the greenhouse to compare interspecific competition among two triallate/difenzoquat susceptible (S) and 10 resistant (R) wild oat (Avena fatua L.) populations. Each series included monocultures of each of the populations and three mixtures at relative S:R proportions of 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3. Shoot dry weight tended to be greater in the R than S populations, but results were not always statistically significant at the 5% level. Leaf area was more variable, but in most cases did not differ between R and S populations. With a few exceptions, relative crowding coefficients for shoot dry weight and leaf area were similar for S and R populations indicating little or no differences in competitiveness. In field experiments where two S and five R populations were grown in competition with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), two of the R populations produced significantly (P < 0.05) greater shoot dry weight and seed yield than the S populations. Otherwise populations did not differ significantly. In seed germination studies, the S populations consistently displayed lower cumulative germination than the R populations. The higher seed germination associated with the R populations suggests that producers should be able to manage these populations effectively with a combination of alternative herbicides and cultural practices. Information on nitrogen fertilizer effects on crop–weed competitive interactions might aid in developing improved weed management programs. A controlled environment study was conducted to examine the effect of three N rates on the competitive ability of four weed species grown with wheat. The four weed species were chosen to represent species that varied in their growth responsiveness to nitrogen (N): Persian darnel (low), Russian thistle (low), redroot pigweed (high), and wild oat (high). Wheat and each weed species were grown in a replacement series design at N rates of 60, 120, and 240 mg N kg−1soil. The competitive ability of the low N-responsive species, Persian darnel and Russian thistle, was not influenced by N rate, supporting our hypothesis that N rate would have little effect on the competitiveness of species responding minimally to N. Conversely, the competitiveness of the high N-responsive species redroot pigweed progressively improved as N rate increased. However, wild oat competitiveness was unaffected by N fertilizer rate. There is some evidence from this study to suggest that fertilizer management strategies that favor crops over weeds deserve greater attention when weed infestations consist of species known to be highly responsive to higher soil N levels. Information gained in this study will be used to advise farmers of the importance of strategic fertilizer management in terms of both weed management and crop yield.

Pemberian gelombang suara dengan frekuensi tinggi dapat merangsang mulut daun  (stomata) tetap terbuka, akibatnya laju dan efisiensi penyerapan pupuk meningkat yang bermanfaat bagi tanaman. Hasil penggunaan sonic bloom pada tanaman adalah mampu menstimulir metabolisme sel-sel tanaman, sehingga terjadi peningkatan penyerapan nutrisi dan uap air lewat daun yang berpengaruh pada pertumbuhan dan produktivitas tanaman. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu (1) untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian musik Gamelan Bali terhadap pertumbuhan dan produktivitas tanaman sawi pakcoy dan (2) untuk menentukan jenis musik Gamelan Bali yang memberikan pertumbuhan dan produktivitas sawi pakcoy yang terbaik. Penelitan ini menggunakan tanaman sawi pakcoy (Brassica Rafa L.).  Perlakuan yang diberikan  dalam penelitian adalah pemberian musik gamelan bali dengan nuansa musik yang berbeda. Perlakuan 1 menggunakan musik gamelan Angklung, Perlakuan 2 menggunakan musik gamelan Semarpagulingan dan Perlakuan 3 menggunakan musik gamelan Gong Kebyar. Data yang diperoleh dianalis ANOVA dengan program IBM SPSS 20. Variabel yang diamati yaitu tinggi tanaman, luas kanopi daun tanaman, tingkat kehijauan daun tanaman, dan berat kering. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa pemberian musik gong kebyar menghasilkan nilai tertinggi pada variabel tinggi tanaman, luas kanopi daun, tingkat kehijauan daun, dan berat kering yang  masing menghasilkan nilai yaitu yaitu 29,98 cm, 1684 cm2, 186,79, dan 68,61 gr. Pemberian musik memberikan pengaruh yang positif dan berbeda nyata pada pertumbuhan tanaman sawi pakcoy. Semakin tinggi frekuensi musik yang diberikan maka semakin baik pertumbuhan tanaman sawi pakcoy yang dihasilkan.  High frequency sound waves can stimulate the mouth of leaf (stomata) remains opened.The stomata remains open leading to efficient absorption of fertilizer. The purposes of this research were (1) to find out the effect of Balinese instrument music on the growth and productivity of pakcoy mustard plant and (2) to determine the type of Balinese instrument music that gives the best growth and productivity of mustard pakcoy. The treatment of this research was the application of Balinese instrument music with different musical nuances for 3 hours. Treatment 1 was using Angklung instruments music, treatment 2 was using Semarpagulingan instrument music and treatment 3 using Gong Kebyar instrument music. The obtained data was analized by ANOVA with the IBM SPSS 20 program. The observed variables include plant height, canopy area of plant leaf, green leaves level and dry weight. The results showed that Gong Kebyar instrument music application produces the highest value of 29.98 on the height of the plant variables, the widest value of 1684 cm2  on the canopy area variables, the biggest value that is 68,61 gr on the dry weight variables and the largest value of 186.79 on the green leaves level variables. Balinese instrument music application effect to the growth of pakcoy mustard plant. The best plant growth was the plant with gong kebyar instrument music application from all observed variables.

Avenaspp. are world weeds with many cases of evolved herbicide resistance. In Australia,Avenaspp. (wild oat and sterile oat) are a major problem, especially in grain crops. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)–inhibiting herbicides have been used extensively since the late 1970s forAvenaspp. control. However, continued reliance on these herbicides has resulted in the evolution of resistantAvenaspp. populations. Resistance across many ACCase-inhibiting herbicides was characterized in fourAvenaspp. populations from the Western Australian grain belt. Dose–response experiments were conducted to determine the level of resistance to the aryloxyphenoxypropionates and cyclohexanediones and to the phenylpyrazoline herbicide pinoxaden. On the basis of resistance index values, all four resistant populations exhibited high-level diclofop resistance but varied in the level of resistance to other ACCase-inhibiting herbicides tested. It is evident thatAvenaspp. populations from the Western Australian grain belt have evolved resistance to a number of ACCase-inhibiting herbicides.
