The results of studies of antiradical activity by the method of DPPG absorption by extracts of rye, wheat, and oat seedlings enriched with selenium from aqueous solutions of sodium Selenite 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05% concentrations within 24 hours. Selenium inhibits the rate of reaching the "plateau" of the DPPG absorption reaction, but increases the anti-radical activity of grain seedlings. The total content of phenolic compounds in grain extracts was determined spectrophotometrically. The influence of selenium on the growth processes of wheat, rye, and oats is shown. Concentrations of 0.001 and 0.005% have a stimulat-ing effect on the length of the roots and coleoptile of grain crops. At a concentration of 0.05%, selenium is deposited as granules in the cells of the germ of the grain. Oats are the most sensitive crop to selenium, and wheat and rye are promising as crops that can exhibit antiradical properties and source of organic forms of selenium.

The data on the morphophysiological characteristics of young three-leaf shoots (flashes, the first collection wave) of Camellia sinensis L. cultivars Kolhida and Kimyn, cultivated in the conditions of Russia subtropics (Krasnodar region, Sochi), the accumulation of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a and b), phenolic compounds, including flavanes, and antiradical activity of extracts obtained from them are presented. It has been shown that the Kolhida cultivar is characterized by the formation of larger leaves compared to those of the Kimyn cultivar, as well as a high accumulation of photosynthetic pigments in them. At the same time, in the leaves of both tea representatives, the total content of chlorophylls a and b was higher compared with the stems. A similar tendency is characteristic for the accumulation of the phenolic compounds sum and flavanes, whereas the number of proanthocyanidins (soluble and insoluble) in the stems exceeded that in the leaves by 2–3 times. Both cultures had the same ability to form all forms of phenolic compounds, which is consistent with the data on the activity of L- phenylalanine ammonia-lyase – the key enzyme of their metabolism. It was established that the antiradical activity of extracts obtained from tea leaves was, on average, 30–40% higher than that of the stems and correlated with the content of phenolic compounds in them.

The study compared the content of eight phenolic acids and four flavonoids and the antioxidant activity of six Polish varietal honeys. An attempt was also made to determine the correlations between the antioxidant parameters of the honeys and their polyphenol profile using principal component analysis. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity (ABTS) and reduction capacity (FRAP) were determined spectrophotometrically, and the phenolic compounds were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The buckwheat honeys showed the strongest antioxidant activity, most likely because they had the highest concentrations of total phenols, total flavonoids, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, vanillic acid and chrysin. The principal component analysis (PCA) of the data showed significant relationships between the botanic origin of the honey, the total content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids and the antioxidant activity of the six Polish varietal honeys. The strongest, significant correlations were shown for parameters of antioxidant activity and TPC, TFC, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid and p-coumaric acid. Analysis of four principal components (explaining 86.9% of the total variance), as a classification tool, confirmed the distinctiveness of the Polish honeys in terms of their antioxidant activity and content of phenolic compounds.

Introduction. Honey, propolis and pollen belong to bee products that have beneficial biological properties. These products exhibit e.g. antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Due to biological activity and natural origin, bee products are used, e.g. in the food industry, cosmetology and pharmacy. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of honey, propolis and pollen from an apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. Material and methods. Honey, propolis and pollen used in this study came from the same apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. The antioxidant potential of bee products was evaluated applying DPPH· free radical scavenging activity assay. The antimicrobial activity of the tested bee products was determined by the point-diffusion method against 13 strains of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the total content of phenolic compounds in honey, propolis and pollen was determined by the colorimetric method. Results. Propolis exhibited higher antioxidant activity, in comparison to honey and pollen. The antiradical activity of propolis was equal to 80% approx. activity of Trolox, the standard antioxidant. Among tested bee products, propolis was characterized by the highest total phenols content. In addition, honey, propolis and pollen showed antagonistic activity against tested bacterial strains. Conclusions. The obtained results indicate that among the tested bee products of native origin, i.e. honey, propolis and pollen, propolis characterized by the highest antioxidant activity and the total content of phenolic compounds. In addition, all bee products showed bactericidal activity against the tested bacterial strains.

Introduction. Propolis, also known as bee glue, is a resinous material collected by honeybees with numerous biological properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer effects. Due to its health-promoting properties, propolis is a component of many products, including dietary supplements, cosmetics and healthy food. Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity of propolis extracts, as well as to compare the biological activity of propolis extracts, depending on the solvent used – ethyl alcohol or propylene glycol. Material and methods. Two propolis extracts were used in the research – the first was prepared in ethyl alcohol, and the second in propylene glycol. The antimicrobial activity of the examined extracts was determined against S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans. The antioxidant activity was determined on the basis of the evaluation of their antiradical activity in the DPPH· test and Fe2+ chelating activity. Moreover, the total content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in the tested extracts was determined using the colorimetric method. Results. The tested propolis extracts, regardless of the solvent used (ethyl alcohol or propylene glycol), showed high antibacterial (against S. aureus), antifungal (against C. albicans) and antioxidant (antiradical activity in the DPPH· test and ferrous iron chelating potency in the ferrozine test) activity. Moreover, both tested extracts were characterized by a high and similar content of bioactive compounds – phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Conclusions. The results of the conducted tests showed that the solvent used did not affect determined biological activity and the content of bioactive substances in the tested propolis extracts.

The antiradical properties of essential oils from the inflorescences of Filipendula ulmaria (L). Maxim, herbages Hypericum perforatum L. and Pulmonaria mollis Wulfen ex HORNEM., growing on the territory of the Krasnoyarsk territory were studied. For this purpose, the reaction of essential oil components with a stable free 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical was used. Essential oil of the plants under study received comprehensive hydroponically. The component composition of the oils was determined by chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components of essential oil of F. ulmaria inflorescences are methyl salicylate (28.2%), salicylic aldehyde (2.8 %) and linalool (4.9%), essential oil of H. perforatum – γ - amorphene (30.7%), δ-cadinen (7.1%), (E, E)-β-farnesene (5.5%), caryophyllene (5.0%), ledol (5.0%), essential oil of P. mollis – di-n-butyl phthalate (18.7%), docosan (13.4%), tetracosan (11.6 %). The results of the DPPH test showed that the essential oils of the inflorescences of F. ulmaria and the aboveground part of H. perforatum and P. mollis exhibit antiradical activity (ARA). According to the size of the ARA of essential oils, the studied plants can be arranged in the following row: P. mollis > F. ulmaria > H. perforatum.

Berries of Actinidia kolomikta (A. kolomikta) are known for high ascorbic acid content, but the diversity of phenolic compounds has been little studied. The present research aimed to investigate phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in berries and leaves of twelve A. kolomikta cultivars. The UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS technique was used to determine differences among cultivars in the quantitative composition of individual phenolic compounds. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH• free radical scavenging and CUPRAC methods. In the present study, 13 phenolic compounds were detected in berries, whereas leaves contained 17 phenolic compounds. Flavonols were the primary class found in both berries and leaves; other identified phenolic compounds were flavan-3-ols, flavones and, phenolic acids; and dihydrochalcone phloridzin was identified in the leaves. The amount and variety of phenolic compounds in berries and leaves and antioxidant activity were found to be cultivar-dependent. The highest total content of phenolic compounds was found in the leaves of the cultivar ‘Aromatnaja’ and in the berries of the cultivar ‘VIR-2’. Results of this study have confirmed that berries and leaves of A. kolomikta could be a valuable raw material for both food and pharmaceutical industries.

Mirabilis jalapa is a popular decorative plant valued for its beautiful multicolored flowers. Folk medicine in various countries applies Mirabilis jalapa as anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, spasmolytic drug. Chemical composition of different types of Mirabilis jalapa has not yet been adequately studied which is an obstacle for its application in medicine. The qualitative composition and quantitative content of phenolic compounds were studied by the HPLC method. The performed experiment revealed presence of hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, isoflavonoids and coumarins in tested herb. The content of phenolic compounds was the highest in Mirabilis jalapa flowers, counting as much as 2977.41 ± 59.55 µg/mg. Total content of phenolic compounds in Mirabilis jalapa herb was 304.25 ± 6.08 µg/mg, in fruits – 67.92 ± 1.36 µg/mg, and in roots – 12.44 ± 0.25 µg/mg. Quantitatively neochlorogenic acid dominated in flowers, chlorogenic acid in fruits, whereas Mirabilis jalapa herb mostly contained rutin and hyperoside. The obtained results will be useful in the development of quality control methods for Mirabilis jalapa herb and manufacture of drug preparations on its basis.
