scholarly journals The Academia as Profession

There is an obvious conceptual link between the words "professor" and "profession". May one however assume that being a professor entails belonging to a profession, an academic profession? One may have various motives for entering into and staying in the academy, eg the advantage of progression one the basis of one's own, independent efforts, earning a good salary and following one's calling to expend the energy and abilities one receives in life sensibly. Professors are expected to be (at least) adequate teachers; they are required to have and maintain specialised knowledge of their field and to generate new knowledge by means of the production and dissemination of original research results. Insofar as professions are characterised by their members having specialised knowledge or skills, performing specialised services, are bound by ethical codes and holding an acknowledged social status often expressed in titles, there should therefore not be any doubt as to the existence of an academic profession distinct from other professions (especially those related to the field of scholarship concerned). Practising academics should work towards the active acknowledgment by all of the professionalism of the professorial institution.

This paper covers the approach taken by WRc to the practical application of research results. WRc works on an annual programme of research paid for collectively by the UK water utilities totalling ₤15m. In addition contract research is carried out for government largely on environmental matters and for utilities and others on a confidential basis. The approach to the implementation described here deals with the application of results across the whole of the United Kingdom where there are a large number of users of the results but with varying degrees of interest in any particular topic. The requirement is to inform all of the outcome of the work and then to provide the facility of rapid implementation for those who have an immediate requirement to apply the new knowledge and technology.

Statement of the problem. The article analyzes the problem of organizing the activities of schoolchildren in the field of additional biological education. The purpose of the article is to prepare and justify the methodological features of the organization of additional biological education in summer health camps. The research methodology consists of normative legal documents in the field of additional education, analysis and synthesis of research works by Russian scientists, advanced and mass experience of biology teachers. Research results. The types and kinds of summer health camps and the duration of children’s stay in them are defined. The structure and direction of activities in the health camp are analyzed and synthesized. The specificity of the content of teachers’ work in the field of ecological and biological orientation of educational camp programs is revealed. Examples of recommended ways to organize specialized health camps of ecological and biological orientation are given. Conclusion. Health camp of ecological and biological orientation contributes to the formation of a socially significant, patriotic position of students, allows them to acquire new knowledge about plants and animals, practical skills of research and project activities, which ultimately implements their creative abilities and develops individual personality qualities.

Dear readers! It is our great pleasure to present to you the first regular issue of the Croatian Journal of Education in 2021. This issue brings ten papers by authors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, South Korea, Serbia, Spain and Turkey. Regarding the categorisation of the papers, this time we present four original research papers, three preliminary communications and three review papers. As previously, the featured papers advocate the thematic diversity of the concerns in the field of education. Furthermore, the papers present innovative, creative and multidisciplinary approaches to researching the issues of education. Through the research results and their interpretation, the presented works offer scientific explanations and understandings as well as predictions and control of the research phenomena in the field of education. Thereby we further develop the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary direction of the Croatian Journal of Education. In this regard, we still wish you much success in your creative and innovative scientific projects, and we are looking forward to many more of your high-quality papers in 2021. Time i dalje razvijamo interdisciplinarnost i multidisciplinarnost Hrvatskog časopisa za odgoj i obrazovanje.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to make a contribution to the theoretical understanding of documents and documentary agency in society through examples from a defined institutional and professional setting; and second, to create an understanding for the role of ethical codes in the process of defining and developing modern librarianship. Design/methodology/approach This study analyses the role of documentation carrying content of professional ethics in the formulation of modern librarianship. This is done through a series of example documents of various kinds, such as founding charters, peer handbooks and ethical codes systematically analysed through the use of document theory and theory on institutional change. Findings The findings of this study suggest that documents pronouncing ethical self-regulation within librarianship play a primarily legitimising role in situations where new types of libraries emerge or when libraries adapt to social change. The study proposes legitimacy as a key aspect of documentality, thus supplementing the established understanding of the concept. Originality/value This study is the first to analyse the role of ethical codes in libraries using document theory. It brings new knowledge to the role of ethical self-regulation in librarianship over time and in different institutional contexts. In suggesting a developed definition of documentality, it contributes to the theoretical understanding of the role of documents and documentation in institutions and in society at large.

The rate of development of the subject has been so rapid that it has become difficult for any individual to be conversant with all its implications. Nevertheless, if the benefits of current research are to be realized in practice, some means must be found for presenting the essential data in an assimilable form. The history of the subject is briefly commented on and doubt is expressed regarding the adequacy of the rate of application of new knowledge to industrial problems. Full appreciation of even the simplest bearing situation requires knowledge of hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, material science and metrology and the multi-disciplinary aspects of tribology are emphasized. The introduction of tribology into engineering courses should not therefore impose too great a burden on the student because it depends on fundamentals already understood. The main emphasis of the paper, as indeed of the Conference, is on the application of research results to design. An attempt is made to classify the duty to be performed by a bearing and then to show that the form taken by the solution flows logically therefrom. Protection from hostile environments is emphasized as being probably the most important requirement for satisfactory performance. The paper concludes with the prediction that the general advance in technology will continue to make demands for an advance in knowledge in the field of tribology.

Library collections are economically sustainable only if the rate of increase in costs is no greater than the rate of increase in the library acquisitions budget. Because book prices increase at a much lower rate than journal prices, undergraduate libraries can achieve economic sustainability through a renewed emphasis on books rather than journals. Book-centered collections are consistent with the goals of many undergraduate colleges, and books rather than journals may provide the best teaching resources even in those fields that rely heavily on journals for the communication of original research results.
