The purpose of this phenomenological undertaking is to describe the lived realities of the street sweepers working in the City Local Government Units (CLGUs) in Davao Region, Philippines. In-depth Interview (IDI) and Focus Group Discussion were employed in collecting the data. Findings revealed that they are working with no security of tenure leading to meager compensation and non-existent benefits. Dearth of necessary work implements and bureaucratic red tape were found out as predicaments encountered other than insecurity and vulnerability of the work. In solving the problems encountered, loan dependence and moonlighting turned out to be the primary solution aside from perseverance to the job, detachment and nonchalance as well as their wishful thinking.  Out from the generated results, it can be learned that they desire recognition and respect and environmental responsibility among citizenry needs to be cultivated. Amidst the deprivation due to the nature of their employment, there is pride and satisfaction in doing their job. Though a street sweeper’s work is hard and unenviable, job security continues to be an elusive dream.

This paper is concerned with an oral tradition called Badoncek program which is usually performed at night after the invited guests of a wedding party have gone home. In this study, 20 informants of Pariaman community were interviewed in two different locations, that is at Pasar Sukaramai, Medan and Naras Hilir village in Pariaman district. These interviews generated a total of 6 forms of local wisdom in badoncek ceremony and 5 forms of its weaknesses which were then recorded, transcribed, and documented. This research used in-depth interview and focussed on group discussion. The focus of discussion was on finding the forms of local wisdom and the weakness of the oral tradition of badoncek. These forms of weakness were analyzed based on interpretation and comparison methods. It was found that the concept Barek samo dipikua jikok ringan samo dijinjiang ‘A heavy problem is to be lifted together, and a light problem is also to be carried together’ was implemented through badoncek tradition. The six forms of local wisdom of badoncek were mutual cooperation, harmony, deliberation and consensus, mutual help, openness, and entertainment. The five forms of weaknesses of badoncek were an old tradition, lack of socialization, lack of parents’ role in motivating young generation, lack of knowledge about oral tradition, and lack of empathy to contribute. A number of attempts have been made to preserve badoncek tradition by approaching the local government, custom leaders in Pariaman District, and Pariaman community associations. Badoncek tradition could also be applied to raise funds in order to support various programs of the local government.

This study intends to identify the current employment status of educated Dalit youths and the employment perception of employed Dalit youths in Nepal. A descriptive and exploratory design, with both qualitative as well as quantitative approach, was framed for the study. A random sample of 400 educated Dalit youths was taken for a quantitative study from Dalit Employability Enhancement Database (DEED) project of the NGO named Professional Research and Development Centre in Kathmandu. In addition, focus group discussion (FGD) was conducted with 50 educated Dalit youths. The employment scenario of the Dalit youths is not too encouraging. Female Dalits stay more unemployed in comparison to males, despite having similar educational qualifications and competencies. It may be indicative of non-engagement or empowerment of Dalit women towards employment in the country. Majority of the Dalit youths were found to be satisfied with their current jobs. Those who were dissatisfied with their jobs were so mainly due to their salaries, lack of job security, lack of opportunities to career progression and mismatching in working areas.

This study aims to find out the strategy applied by Surabaya city in implementing the 12-year compulsory education program and the funding of school operational cost of secondary education. The approach used was both qualitative and quantitative with data and information gathered from interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and survey form. It can be concluded that the first strategy done by Surabaya city in supporting 12-year compulsory education was preparing a regulation support through a local government’s (including the mayor’s) laws and regulations, which mandate about educational financing. This educational budget is used in improving students’ participation and competence, improving schools’ infrastructure and facility, and improving educators and educational staffs’ competence and welfare. The only sources of school operational cost funding for public secondary schools in Surabaya are the BOS grant from central government and BOPDA grant from local government, whereas for private schools, there is also support from the community in the form of committee contribution. The 12-year compulsory education program in Surabaya can be adopted as a best practice for other districts/cities who are implementing the program.
