The ability to reproduce and assess the content of the text and its argumentation is the most important competence in any profession. Medical students’ systematic approach to information analysis based on evidence-based medical principles can be already developed at the beginning of the study process in the theoretical courses. The goal of this research is to analyse the effectiveness of a didactic model that is based on critical thinking principles and includes a wide range of approaches to working with information. Learning by memorization has become dominant for medical students in Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). The goal of the chemistry course is to shift the emphasis from fact memorization to knowledge construction, thus significantly changing students’ analytic abilities. The chemistry course not only creates the conditions for understanding content but also improves skills in various methods of acquiring knowledge. When new knowledge is being constructed students learn methods for organizing and structuring information and each student has an opportunity to choose the appropriate amount of information and participation level. Study material is being analyzed sequentially from the simplest to the most complex i.e. by starting with elementary calculations and moving to integrate information from different disciplines. Didactic model based on critical thinking principles underpins "logical steps" and requirements (fact recognition, analysis, and interpretation, recognition of fallacies and concepts, the perfection of reasoning algorithms, interdisciplinary connections) orient students to critically evaluate information while searching for problem solutions. The results obtained in student surveys and final tests prove that the created model, which is based on critical thinking principles, ensures successful mastering of the chemistry course to students with any level of prior knowledge.

The main aims of the study were to identify the career choices in preventive and social medicine and non-clinical specialties along with the intended practice locations of medical students of Bangladesh. First, third and fifth year students of Bangladesh Medical College and Uttara Adhunik Medical College completed a self-reported questionnaire and were asked to choose three long-term choices from the given specialties. A small number of students opted for preventive and social medicine (3%), medical administration and management (3%), and basic medical science specialties. The popular choices among male and female were medical and surgical specialties (6%). More than 67% of respondents wanted to join private services and about 90% chose major cities as practice locations. As the majority of the students intended to specialize in established clinical specialties and subsequently practice in major cities, Bangladesh will suffer a chronic shortage of health personnel in those specialties and in rural areas. Major reforms are needed in medical education and healthcare to attract and retain a health workforce in those fields and to ensure equitable and high quality healthcare for those people who have little to no access to medical services. Aim: To identify the factors that influence motivation of medical students to volunteer for community service. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study was done over a period of two weeks in November 2017. The study participants were medical students of a private medical college from Southern India. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using an interview guide based on a standardised motivation to volunteer inventory. Data was collected till data saturation was reached, which was 20 students. The interviews were conducted in privacy. Verbatim notes were taken and the interview was also recorded after taking consent from the participants. The data was transcribed and triangulation done. The data was analysed using the thematic analysis approach. Results: The main motives were enhancement and career motives. Value was not the main motive. Two other motives emerged, that were curiosity and relief from boredom. Conclusion: The study shows that the main motives behind volunteerism were enhancement and career. This was the first such study from India to the best of our knowledge which has enquired into the motives behind volunteerism in medical students.

Background: Information technology (IT) is a new way of teaching and learning. One of the promising media of information technology is e-Learning, which is used to enhance knowledge and skills among users. A student gains better and deep knowledge through a useful tool. This survey aimed to determine practices among medical students for e-Learning. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 184 students amongst the 500 students currently enrolled in medical college. Data was collected using questionnaires and were analyzed through SPSS version 22. Chi-square was used for qualitative values. Results: Majority 90.80% (n=167) students were aware of e-Learning and were statistically high in first year students (p-value: 0.018). The student did not show statistically significant results for content learned through e-Learning with a p-value of 0.063. Different resources were used for e-Learning in which videos had the highest percentage (87.60%) and audios were used as the least resource for e-Learning (29.20%). Background: Family medicine is a field in which complete and detailed set of healthcare services are provided to the patients and their families. In developed countries, freshly graduated students choose family medicine as a priority for their career. However, in Pakistan it is not the case. The present study is undertaken to determine the perceptions of final year medical students’ about Family Medicine as a viable career. Methods: A total number of 504 students participated in the study. This was a cross-sectional study. The study participants were in their final year of medical college. Data was collected using a preapproved questionnaire. Data was entered and analyzed via SPSS version 17 and Chi-Square test was used post-stratification. Results: Only 14.3% (n=72) medical students had heard about Family Medicine. Only 18% (n=92) would select family medicine as a profession. The most frequent rationale for choosing the field of Family Medicine was the variety of patients seen in general practice (55.4% n=51).
