Socioeconomic and organizational dynamics in remaining quilombo community Rio Gurupá, Marajó, Pará

Abstract: The present work aimed to analyze the socioeconomic dynamics and the organization in agroextractivist family units of the remaining community of quilombo Rio Gurupá, Municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, Marajó, state of Pará. It is a study carried out through quantitative research, Qualitative, with methodological tools being in-depth interviews and questionnaires with open and closed questions, applied to 39 community members, representing 26% of the community's residents. The results indicate that 79% of producers have low level of education (incomplete elementary education and illiteracy). The houses are mostly wood and there is a great lack of basic sanitation and access to treated water. From the reconfiguration of productive, cultural and environmental activities, alternatives are created for the development of family units. However, açaí's extractivism is still the main market activity developed by the community, while the others are aimed at self-consumption, during the off-season of the main product, or even to complement the family income. The reconstruction and valorization of the natural resources and cultural identity of the community in question are closely related to the recognition and incentive of the extractive activity, not only as a subsistence activity, but as an alternative that seeks to attribute economic value to the standing forest.

This paper aims to examine the relationship between marriage / marriage with the belis system (dowry /dowry) and obedience (wife) to the husband, and whether these two factors influence women's voting behavior in the general election in Nagekeo. . Marriage by giving a belis that is felt to be of high economic value demands the wife's level of compliance with her husband, because with the granting of belis, the husband feels he has full power over women to approach this problem using the theoretical reference from the concept of Gender and Development, thus knowing the extent to which women are involved in determining their own choices, not only in a wider scope, but in a small scope within the family as well. Data collected through in-depth interviews with informants, and analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that belis here is a cultural heritage contained with historical and social values in it. However, the belis did not have a full effect on the level of compliance and voting behavior of women in the elections in Nagekeo.

Historically, breadwinning is linked to cultural ideologies about masculinity and fatherhood, suggesting contemporary breadwinner mothers confront a gendered cultural ideal. I draw on 42 in-depth interviews with mothers and fathers in 21 couples in which women provide 80% to 100% of the family income to better understand mothers’ breadwinning. Few mothers self-identify as providers; just 38% of women (and their husbands) reported that wives were the family’s primary financial provider. Interviews indicate that while these mothers feel financial pressures similar to those reported by male breadwinners, their experience can also be characterized by the role it plays in undermining husbands’ masculinity and in deepening conflicts between employment and mothering. Overall, while adopting gender-atypical roles may promote change in the direction of greater equality, as when mothers get more serious about paid work or feel accomplishment as a breadwinner, this process is constricted by embedded cultural ideals of mothering and masculinity.

The low level of public knowledge about fish processing causes fish to have less high economic value and less use as an alternative source of protein other than meat, significantly as an alternative solution to strengthen family income. Especially for milkfish, which has many thorns, causing people to be reluctant to consume and make processed milkfish a product of business choice. This phenomenon has led this service activity to introduce another alternative processing, namely thorn-pulled milkfish. Besides being comfortable, the tools used are relatively easy to get, and the price is not high. The processing of thorny milkfish can also be used as an alternative to increasing the economic value of milkfish, contributing to an increase in family income when engaged as a business route. The implementation of this thorn milkfish business management training activity showed that the participants had high enthusiasm. This was shown by the activity that the participants could independently remove or separate the milkfish from their spines. There is a growing desire to utilize thorns pulled milkfish as a source of family protein. Besides, the analysis of the thorn-pulled milkfish processing business also shows a potential opportunity as an alternative business in the context of strengthening the family economy.

Gender discrimination continues to exist in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, with women often placed in the role of mother and housekeeper. In areas such as Bobung Village, where they form an integral part of the local industry, women transcend these roles to contribute to the economy. This research aimed to examine women's roles in adding to the artistic value of wooden crafts, their impact on increasing family income, and local community members’ views towards these female roles. The research was socio-anthropological, with data obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and content analyses of documents and records. Data were analyzed using an interactive model including data collection, reduction of presentation, and verification. The findings showed that (1) women play a significant role in improving the artistic value of wooden crafts through their batik painting and writing techniques. They make these crafts appear more exotic, and help to preserve traditional batik motifs. (2) With the addition of these women’s motifs to wooden crafts, they add to their family income while still performing their domestic duties, such as caring for their children and cooking. Their wages are based on a daily system, collective system, or combination of both. (3) Batik-making on wooden crafts has feminine characteristics; it is soft and light, as opposed to woodworking’s masculine characteristics of hard, physical work. Women’s batik-making is consequently complementary to the work performed by men. According to the local people, there is no gender bias related to the job differentiation between men and women.

The communities who live around Sibolangit Tourism Park have developed nontimber forest products (NTFP) in their own agroforestry lands. This research evaluates the potential economic and development prospects from NTFP development in the Park by examining: (1) type of NTFP and economic value from community agrofrestry land, (2) contribution of NTFPs on household income, (3) development prospects of NTFP-based agroforestry around Sibolangit Tourism Park. The research was conducted in two selected villages around Sibolangit Tourism Park: Sembahe Village and Batu Mbelin Village. The research took place over a period between June and August 2016. Research data was obtained from in-depth interviews and observations. A descriptive method was used to analyze and describe facts related to the research aims. The type of NTFPs cultivated by communities at the research sites include mangosteen, durian, garcinia, candlenut, lanzones, lansium, bitter bean, and areca nut (as their forestry component) and ginger, turmeric, chili, papaya, etlingera, and banana (as the agriculture component). Most NTFPs are cultivated as a comercial product. The economic value of NTFPs in Batu Mbelin Village has reached Rp. 547,275,000/year or contribute 80.07% of total family income. Meanwhile, the economic value of NTFPs in Sembahe Village has reached Rp 682,100,000/year, contributing to 78.75% of total household income. Therefore, the prospects for supporting and expanding NTFP in agroforestry plots in and around Sibolangit Tourism Park has high potential for supporting household income

This article intends to identify and to describe the unique structure and the managing style that owns primordial characteristics, that is giving significance to kinship, religion, and local Bugis cultural values, which made up the cultural system of PT. Hadji Kalla family business. Theoritically, this research was inspired from Weberian perspective on the ideal types of bureaucracy, that observes organizations (in this case is the family business) as one of the socio-cultural phenomena which is neutral and value-free, that is place aside its subjective aspects. The research was conducted in two locations, the head office and one of the branch offices using qualitative approach that relies on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The results of the research shows that the family business of PT. Hadji Kalla that has advanced into national level still prioritizes kinship, ethnicity, and religious aspects in the daily activities of the company. The value even take parts in providing the company’s colour to the urban societies in various districts where the company stands. This means that although the society has undergone transformations, it doesn’t mean that the primordial value, and the elements that exist outside of businesses (such as kinship, big men, religion, cultural values, and interest) do not influence the activities that are held in formal organizations. Therefore, the interventions of subjective aspects will always appear, followed with the application of the modern management system that is implemented by PT. Hadji Kalla company.
