Foreign Language Reading Comprehension in the Context of Internet Use

Reading comprehension is a complex mental performance of an individual, which is strongly influenced by the modern phenomenon of the use of the Internet. The main goal of the study is to examine the relationship between foreign language reading comprehension (in English and German) and the Internet use (time spent on the Internet, the Internet addiction). The results of the research confirmed negative relationship between the time spent online and reading comprehension in German. Internet addiction is positively correlated with reading comprehension in English, this relationship is influenced by demographic variables of students’ gender and the type of school attended.

The present study was designed to determine the relationship between Internet addiction & loneliness, based on a sample of tenth grades students in Al- Sharqiya North at Sultanate of Oman during coronavirus world health issues (n = 165), 83 male, 82 female. Descriptive method was used. Findings show that there is a negative relationship (α ≤ 0.05) between students’ Internet addiction level & the loneliness level. There are statistically significant differences in the averages of Internet addiction among students by gender variable (male, female) in favor of males, no statistically significant differences in the degree of loneliness by gender variable (male, female), level of internet addiction in the sample are low(1.55), and level of psychological loneliness moderate (2.90). Based on the results, the researchers presented a set of recommendations and proposals to regulate the use of the Internet and prevent the risks of addiction and psychological loneliness.

Background: In recent years, Internet use has been of interest to different groups of people especially students and its charm has caused users to spend hours of their time at the computer. Studies show that growing demand for Internet technology caused significant mental health problems and reduced quality of life and unhealthy social relationships for many people. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between internet addictions and sleep quality as one of the components of quality of life among college students.Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among  students of Torbat Heydariyeh city in 2015. Data were collected by self-report. Data collection tools were internet addiction questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and a demographic questionnaire. Data was analyzed by SPSS 21. P <0.05 considered statically significant.Results:  The average score of sleep disorders and addiction to the Internet was 4.690 ± 0.050 and 33.98 ± 12.05, which represents the average sleep disorders and internet addiction among students. 32.50% of students were suffering from sleep disorders and 23.9% of students had high dependence on the Internet and 2% had severe dependence. Between internet addiction and sleep disorders components, sleep quality and overall score of Pittsburgh questionnaire there was a significant positive correlation (P≤0/05).Conclusion: The results showed that excessive use of the internet is associated with reduced sleep quality and increased daytime sleepiness. Due to the increasing use of the Internet in Iran, especially among students, Familiarize users with the harms of excessive use of the Internet and promote the proper Correct culture is essential In order to promote the correct pattern of Internet use helped to reduce sleep problems in students.Keywords: addiction to Internet, sleep quality, Student.

Abstrak: Bagi generasi pasca milenial penggunaan internet sangat akrab tetapi dengan berbagai tujuan penggunaan. Penelitian ini ingin melihat keterkaitan penggunaan internet oleh penduduk yang sedang sekolah untuk kepentingan penyelesaian tugas sekolah di Indonesia untuk mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik. Analisis berdasarkan data sekunder dari Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional tahun 2018. Hanya saja data yang didapatkan tidak simetris dengan adanya pencilan. Regresi kuantil digunakan untuk meminimumkan pengaruh dari pencilan yang ada. Penelitian mendapatkan hasil bahwa terdapat kaitan yang erat antara akses internet dari penduduk yang sedang sekolah dengan penyelesaian tugas sekolah.  Hasil regresi kuantil menunjukkan bahwa proporsi akses internet untuk penyelesaian tugas sekolah berbeda antar golongan proporsi penggunaan internet. Proporsi penggunaan internet yang tinggi akan digunakan untuk penyelesaian tugas sekolah yang lebih tinggi pula. Abstract: For the post millennial generation the use of the internet is very familiar but with various purposes of use. This study wants to look at the relationship between the use of the internet by residents who are currently in school for the sake of completing school work in Indonesia to get good learning outcomes. Analysis based on secondary data from the 2018 National Socio-Economic Survey. It's just that the data obtained is not symmetrical with outliers. Quantile regression is used to minimize the effect of outliers. The study found that there was a close relationship between internet access from residents who were in school and completion of school work. The quantile regression results show that the proportion of internet access for completing school work differs between groups of proportions of internet use. A high proportion of internet use will be used for completing higher school work.

The relationship between emotion management skills and the use of the Internet was examined in this study to determine whether or not the emotion management skills of university students are a predictor of Internet addiction. The study was conducted in the 2008/2009 academic year with 345 students from different departments of a university in Turkey. Data were collected using the Emotion Management Skills Inventory (Çeçen, 2006) and the Problematic Internet Usage Scale (Ceyhan, Ceyhan, & Gürcan, 2007). Results of regression analysis showed that the total measure of emotion management skills predicted the levels of Internet addiction.

Abstract:The widespread use of the Internet has facilitated that young people become sexually active on the Internet. Some studies suggest that alcohol consumption or abuse of Internet are factors that influence the practice of cybersex. For this reason, we propose this work in order to explore the relationship between these variables and cybersex. Taking a sample of 127 students 14 years old, we have found that there is a deep relationship between Internet abuse, cybersex, and different aspects of alcohol consumption. From these results, we discuss important implications for the nosological status and general knowledge of Internet sex.Keywords: Cybersex, Internet addiction, Alcohol, teenagersResumen:El uso generalizado de Internet ha facilitado que cada vez sean más los jóvenes que inician su actividad sexual en Internet. Algunos estudios apuntan que el consumo de alcohol o el abuso de Internet son factores que influyen en la práctica del cibersexo, por lo que planteamos este trabajo con el objetivo de explorar la relación entre cibersexo y las variables mencionadas. Tomando una muestra de 127 estudiantes de 14 años, se constata que efectivamente existe una profunda relación entre consumo abusivo de Internet y cibersexo, y que éstas a su vez se relacionan con distintos  aspectos del consumo de alcohol. De estos resultados se derivan importantes implicaciones para el estatus nosológico y el conocimiento general del sexo en Internet.Palabras clave: Cibersexo, adicción a Internet, alcohol, Adolescentes

This chapter examines the relationship between the use of the Internet for campaign information and two dimensions of the political engagement of young adults. Drawing on data from a national survey of 18-24 year olds conducted online during the 2008 presidential campaign, it shows that the effect of Internet use for campaign information on political engagement among youth was marginal. While these young adults did take advantage of opportunities to participate on the Internet, reliance on the Internet for campaign information had no significant effect on knowledge about the campaign or more traditional types of political participation. Despite the promise the Internet holds for increasing political interest and participation, those youth who relied on the Internet as their primary source of campaign information did not seem any more inclined to participate in politics than others in their cohort.

Основанный на концепции британского экзистенциального психолога Р. Лэйнга конструкт невоплощенности в интернете (Н. В. Коптева, А. Ю. Калугин, Л. Я. Дорфман) посредством одноименной методики сопоставляется с системообразующим последствием нормативного применения интернета – изменением психологических границ в методике их оценки (МИГ-ТС-2) Е. И. Рассказовой, В. А. Емелина, А. Ш. Тхостова. Выявлены взаимосвязи измерений невоплощенности в интернете с параметрами изменения психологических границ, которые могут свидетельствовать о том, что искусственное технологическое разделение между ментальным Я и физическим телом пользователя создает предпосылки путаницы на границе между Я и не Я. Расширение и размывание границ интернет-пользователя усиливают его виртуализацию и соответствующие ей переживания деперсонализации, утраты реальности независимо от того, оправдывает или не оправдывает технология его ожидания достижимости и контролируемости окружающих людей, объектов и информации. Мотивация предпочтения интернета, связанная с возможностями, которые открывают независимость от физического тела и измененные границы, в значительной мере совпадает. Простота и легкость развоплощенного технологического способа бытия в расширенных, размытых границах придают привлекательность сети и объясняют связь невоплощенности с интернет-зависимостью, которую можно представить как искажение нормативного технологического развоплощения в случае проблемной пользовательской активности. In the present study we compare the construct of disembodiment on the Internet (N. V. Kopteva, A.Ju. Kalugin, L.Ya. Dorfman) based on the clinical conception by the British existential psychologist R. Laing and measured by the same-name technique to the framework consequence of the normative use of the Internet - changes of the psychological borders (E. I. Rasskazova, V. A. Emelin and A. Sh. Tkhostov) assessed by MIG-TS-2 technique. We identified the relationship between measurements of disembodiment and parameters of changes of psychological borders which may indicate that artificial technological split between the mental self and the physical body of a user creates conditions for confusion on the boundary between self and non-self. Expansion and blurring of the borders of an Internet user reinforces virtualizationinduced experiences of depersonalization and loss of reality regardless of whether the technology meets their expectations of availability and controllability of other people, objects and information or doesn’t. Motivation of Internet preference due to the opportunities that independence of the physical body and changes of boundaries present mostly follows the same pattern. Simplicity and easiness of the disembodied technological way of being within the expanded blurry borders makes the Web attractive and explains the relationship between the disembodiment and Internet addiction which can be viewed as distortion of normative technological disembodiment in cases of problematic user’s activity.

The present study was designed to determine the relationship between loneliness and Internet addiction, based on a sample of young generation from Turkey. Participants in this study were students of the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey (n = 440). Findings show that there is a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05) between students' Internet addiction and only the grade they are studying. According to the correlation analysis, it was found that there is a negative relationship between the loneliness of students and the time they spend on the internet, and a positive relationship between internet addiction and age of students. Moreover, it was found that the age, time spent on the Internet and loneliness of university students were important determinants of Internet addiction.

BACKGROUND Rwanda was the first African country to close schools and implemented lock down related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that have led some teachers, lecturers to replace in-personal with online learning. Initiatives such as online teaching and internet use for socializing and stress reduction in this period may achieve positive outcomes. Although internet can be a healthy coping strategy to reduce stress and anxiety and/or to alleviate depressed mood during school closure and lockdown, children and adolescents are at risk of developing internet addiction due to the fact that they have not created yet critical thinking. Therefore Internet addiction is a potential public health concern and family challenges. In addition, internet addiction is associated with some cognitive deficits affecting learning and poor relationships with parents. In such a context, the need to address internet addiction, education and prevention with young people has become self-evident. In this paper, I outline my recommendations for improved public health warnings and education, and research for prevention of Internet addiction in Rwanda. OBJECTIVE To raise awareness on internet addiction during COVID-19 in Rwanda and importance of education and prevention among young people. METHODS The paper is opinion, I used literature to back my Idea RESULTS dysfunction use of the Internet is typically less harmful than many other potential behaviors used to cope with stress and aversive emotions, such as alcohol and other drug use currently considered as public health and family challenges in Rwanda [9 In some children and adolescents however, long term school closure and excessive use of internet might escalate into Internet addiction. CONCLUSIONS To conclude, we would like emphasize the current use of internet by children and adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic (using the Internet for different purposes in addition to e-learning) as a public health and family challenges in Rwanda that are comparable with substance addictions. Risk factor for dysfunctional use of internet and internet addiction among children and adolescents is trait impulsivity (ie, the tendency to take risks or act without adequate forethought or reflection). One of the reasons behind this health concern is the long period of school closure and quarantine related to COVID-19 pandemic that might lead to a spike in dysfunctional use of internet (e.g.,tolerance, withdrawal, craving, loss of control and relapse) and potentially, development of internet addiction in at-risk children and adolescents, therefore placing further pressure on national rehabilitation services, health services and challenge to school system in providing quality students able to work for country, during and after pandemic. In this context, many children and adolescents may not only study through e-learning but also some may be involved in daily behaviours and leisure activities through internet nowadays tend to be considered as tentative new ‘behavioural addictions’with potential to affect their academic performance, relationships with parents, and compromise their physical and psychological functions. Thus, the problem of Internet use among children and adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic was taken here to highlight that consideration of excessive behaviors (such as involvement in internet addiction to include cybersex, exaggerated involvement in social networks or video game) within the biomedical addiction model. Importantly, our argument here is not to minimize the obvious importance of internet use among our children during school closure, to protect themselves, families and health-care systems, and to save lives, but to discuss health concern related to risks and consequences and psychological distress that can result from Internet addiction. We suggest that, as well as this important public health advice, governments should give public health warnings about internet addiction, to cope with stress and aversive emotions. Too many parents are simply unaware of what their children are doing online and little is known of risk associated with internet addiction with respect to their health and wellbeing. Although the field of internet in Rwanda is in its infancy and need to be developed and used by children and adolescents, this cannot prevent government and parents from integrating awareness, education and research as internet addiction prevention strategies among children and adolescents. In the construction of the teaching package on the Internet use, two major moral characters, respect and responsibility, form the core theoretical basis. The respect character consists of respect for others and self-respect while the responsibility character contains social, civil, and global responsibility. There are a total of nine units on the Internet use in the junior secondary curriculum. There are two units in Secondary One curriculum: the first unit deals with cheating behavior and privacy issues concerning the Internet, and the second one discusses the effect of excessive use of the Internet on life and study. In Secondary Two curriculum, we discuss the following social phenomena on the Internet with students: online shopping, pornographic materials on internet, and infringement of a copyright. Finally, we have designed four units on the Internet use in Secondary Three curriculum which focuses more on the relationship between the Internet use and our health. We try to answer the question on how we can use the Internet healthily and also the possibility on how it may hurt us. Similar to the second unit in Secondary One curriculum, we have designed three more units on discussing the effects of excessive use of the Internet with students. We would like to alert students that ineffective use of the Internet will hurt us mentally and physically. For illustrative purposes, two units in the Secondary One and Two curriculums are outlined in this paper.
