The dangers of smoking cigarettes are commonly known especially by the smokers because every pack of cigarettes contained the words “smoking can cause cancer, heart attack, impotence, as well as pregnancy and fetal disorders.” The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between visual warning on cigarette packs and smoking behavior among teenagers. The population of this study were the 11th and 12th grade male students in a MAN (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri—Public Islamic Senior High School) in Banda Aceh with a sample of 71 students. This research was designed in the form of analytical survey with cross-sectional study approach. Data collection was conducted from 17 to 18 June 2016. The result of the study shows that teenage smoking behavior in a MAN in Banda Aceh correlates to visual illustration with p-value of 0.003, typography with p-value of 0.016, coloring with p-value of 0.037, and layout with p-value 0.001. Therefore, it is suggested that smoking hazards awareness programs need to be improved with various approaches. The government is expected to enact a regulation on using plain packaging and visual warning images that cover at least 50% of the cigarette package. The school is expected to administer regular health education programs and to provide guidance to students who smoke.

Smoking is a serious health problem among teenagers, marked by the increasing number of teen smokers every year. This study aimed to determine factors associating with smoking behavior in class XI students at SMAN 4 Kupang. This type of research was quantitative, with a cross-sectional study approach. The total sample was 71 people selected by a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis used the chi-square statistical test. The results showed that three variables, namely: knowledge, peer smoking habits, and self-image, associated with smoking behavior (p-value = 0.056; 0.051; 0.056; and 0.075, respectively). Therefore, the school should increase awareness and restrict the smoking behavior of students by enforcing rules and sanctions for students who smoke in the school environment.

Background: Low public awareness of the impact of smoking makes the implementation of smoke-free areas (KTR) difficult. Smoke-free areas aim to protect the public from the direct and indirect effects of smoking. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the application of smoke-free areas and the prevalence of active and ex-smokers in Indonesia. Method: This study implemented a cross-sectional design, using secondary data from the Riskesdas 2018 on active and ex-smokers. KTR application data were obtained from the Profile of Non-Communicable Diseases in 2016. A Pearson product-moment test was conducted by a computer application to determine the correlation coefficient (r). This coefficient was used to describe the level of correlation between the two variables; significance was determined as a p value of 5%. Results: This study showed that the average application of KTR throughout Indonesia was 50.83%, active smokers comprised 23.49% of the population, and ex-smokers comprised 4.94%. Most active smokers were in Java and Sumatra, while the majority of ex-smokers were in Java and Sulawesi and the majority of KTR was in Java. This study shows that there is a positive correlation between KTR application and the percentage of ex-smokers (r = 0.46; p value = 0.01). Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between the application of KTR and an increase in ex-smokers. The government needs to increase the application of KTR policies.
