Up to the end of the twentieth century, Arabic and English have played an important role as the media for communication all over the world.  Both languages are significantly used in not only national but also global scopes. Millions of people in the world today use either passive or active Arabic and/or English in their daily lives. The question is,’ will the global community in the 21st century still put these international languages in a position as important as it is today?’  Trends in the use of languages in the world can be viewed from several different aspects, among which are the economic strength of a language and the demography of language  users. Although so far there has been no fixed agreement on the criteria of a language to be called as “the world language” yet, there is a tendency that by mid 21st  century there will be trends in the world’s language domination and hierarchy. The trends will also involve the global use of Arabic and English. The two languages are predicted to still have an essential position as the world’s major languages and therefore will be used globally.  The use of Arabic and English is strongly predicted to undergo a transition in a positive way. In addition to that, it is not impossible that by mid 21st century, there will be a tendency of bilingual education (using foreign languages in presenting non-linguistic school subjects) spreading in the world’s urban areas, including those areas in Indonesia.

Since the mid-1990s, our society has substantially advanced digital technologies and their continuous and through integration into people's daily lives. In just a couple of decades, our society has gone from being technically primitive to one of the most advanced in the world (Frey, 2015). Digital technologies have consequently expanded the boundaries of our social circles, and new forms of digital technologies, such as social media and digital platforms, have become parts of our cultural activities. In fact, people do not only use social network sites to keep in touch with friends, but also use them to enjoy certain television drams and popular music. Digital technologies have also changed politics as the users are encouraged to tweet, text, or call in to vote for contestants in everything from reality competition shows to matchmaking endeavours-bridging the gap between our entertainment and our own lives. In the networked 21st century, digital technologies and the media are interwoven, and neither can be separated from contemporary society in most developed and developing nations. By tweeting or uploading people's news and images, the circle of communication is wider than ever (McGivern, 2013). Meanwhile, digital technologies have become some of the most significant tools in the global economy due to their roles as new growth engines for the economy and culture.

There is an urgent need for innovation in the sanitation sector because the conventional model (toilet-to-sewer-to-treatment) is too time-consuming and costly, and alternatives are lacking. We estimate the challenge ahead by developing scenarios for 60 of the fastest-growing urban conglomerates in the World. We find that the majority would need to build out their sewer systems at a rate that is ten to 50 times higher than the highest rate for any project in the World Bank’s database, which is unrealistic. We also carry out a case study of Lagos, Nigeria, which suggests that, in any given year, 14–37% of Lagos State’s budget would need to be invested to provide sanitation to the presently underserviced population while keeping up with population growth, which also is unrealistic. Our study provides clear evidence that the conventional model for sanitation is unworkable for rapidly growing urban areas. We conclude there is an urgent need to encourage and fund projects that promote innovations that can tackle the three core challenges: can be built sufficiently quickly, are flexible, and affordable. This is not likely to happen unless the future generation is systematically trained and educated to creatively support innovation in sustainable sanitation.

Coaching is a global profession and coaches play a central role in enhancing the performance of millions of athletes worldwide. In the 21st century, the global mobility of coaches has increased, with many coaches taking advantage of opportunities to coach abroad. Norway leads the all-time Winter Olympics medals table (i.e., 368 medals), and with most of these medals coming from skiing disciplines, Norway represents a skiing hotbed that attracts ski coaches from other parts of the world. The purpose of the study was to examine ski coaches’ motives for and experiences of expatriation to coach in Norway. Five North American alpine ski coaches (four males and one female) were individually interviewed (M = 77 min, SD = 24.94), with the data examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Motives for expatriation included having a passion for skiing, challenging oneself, experiencing a new sport culture, and maintaining relationships. Upon arriving in Norway, coaches mentioned experiencing challenges with the Norwegian sport system, language, pressure from parents and the media, and being far from friends and family. Once acclimated, coaches discussed the benefits of expatriation that included the Norwegian work ethic, family-centric lifestyle, and popularity of skiing.

This synopsis highlights the vast significance of audiovisual communication in today’s society and moreover in the world of education. It also reveals the influence such means of communication wields. The author largely focuses on the importance of television, and considers it to be an essential visual aid for educating at all levels. The author then proceeds to analyse the concept of manipulation, while rejecting the theories of the Shannon-Weaver model. He also points out the philosophical and ideological rules on which messages coming from television are based; that is to say, postmodernism. Finally, given the range of coverage that the media uphold, the author looks at three major problems concerning society in the 21st century and reinforces the importance of covering these issues in the classroom. These are: violence, primarily concerning terrorist acts of violence, poverty, immigration, and genetic manipulation through science and technology. To conclude the author puts forward some ideas for consideration, suggesting how the television and other means of communication can be used on an everyday basis.

The effects of globalization of the world economy on English, now the dominant world language, has been well documented. While increasing attention has been paid to its changing form and to issues of identity and power (Phillipson 1992, Pennycook 1994, 1998, Fishman et al. 1996, McArthur 1998, Bex and Watts 1999, etc.), less attention has been paid to the effects of globalization on the use of other languages for wider communication, particularly in large cosmopolitan urban areas in expanding circle countries. The current paper examines over 600 signs found in fifteen Bangkok “neighborhoods” to explore how the use of language in environmental print distinguishes one area of the city from another, and how English may be influencing the varieties of Thai in Bangkok.

ABSTRACT – Hyperlocal journalism, understood as the type of journalism practiced and undertaken in small communities around the world, is part of the media ecosystem, but its importance is rarely recognized. With the withdrawal of media companies from smaller locations in the early 21st century, hyperlocal journalism has regained its space thanks to the internet, exploiting the streak of community news to reach audiences in various parts of the world. This study focuses on Portugal and investigates how hyperlocal news is reported on a radio station in the interior of the country: Rádio Cova da Beira (RCB). The results of an analysis of the website’s content, interviews, and participant observation in the newsroom of the broadcaster, based in Fundão, in the district of Castelo Branco (Portugal), show that this model of local journalism values culture, but faces serious structural and financial problems.RESUMO – O jornalismo hiperlocal, compreendido como o tipo de jornalismo praticado em pequenas comunidades, faz parte do ecossistema midiático, mas raramente tem sua importância reconhecida.
